In the setup of a new game, there is a choice to "Disable Epochs" but I have no idea what this means. Does anybody else?

EDIT: It's in the options called "Generation Settings" under the heading of "Game Variants."

I wish for once I could post a thread and not have it show I edited it later. Guess my thinker just ain't what it used to be.

Epochs are eras signifying general sentiment/etc beyond your control. They're paired together in Good/Bad/Good/Bad eras, your VID screen will tell you what Era is going on, what bonuses/maluses are being applied, how long it will last, and how strong the effects are.

Good epochs can offer fairly strong bonuses like "bonus PP income", "free Word gain every turn", "bonus research points"

Bad epochs can be mitigated; they're usually things like "increased difficulty of Unrest rolls" or "Chance to gain Corruption every Turn", but some are harder to mitigate.

I like them; they spice up the game, but newer players might want to consider not using them as they can make a bad situation worse.

Basically, when Epochs are enabeled:
- there is always one Epoch going
- as soon as one ends, another starts
- to my knowledge the AI is not affected (beyond it's ability to cope)
- they have a total time and a time to ramp up to full effect

I second the part that they are a nice addition to the game. Like newageofpower, I usually play with them. They spice up the game. But especially when learning, you propably want to skip them.

Very good explanations from both of you. I've played several games, none very far without starting over. This is a start over. I think I will leave this off like I always have. Maybe next time.

Whenever you pass through an epoch (one ends, the next one begins) you gain a Fate Point and a Fate Card Pack. If you disable them, you won't receive those extra resources. It's not that big of a deal, as there are many other ways to get Fate Points and Fate cards.

At first I hated Epochs. Now I leave them On.

The Good are always good and the Bad are usually only bad when they hit you at the worst possible moment, e.g., the one that reduces leader relations coming at a time when you're already wrangling unruly leaders.

I had a game start with the corruption one right off the bat. Good times...
