I am wondering whether Distant Worlds has faction customisation?

Something I have really enjoyed about StarDrive and Stellaris is the freedom both games give you to (somewhat) separate aesthetic from gameplay. So in other words, if you like a particular portrait, then you choose that portrait, match it with your favourite set of ship models, and go from there. I like in Distant Worlds: Universe how you can choose any ship model regardless of your faction, but I dislike that each game's diplomacy is somewhat predetermined by your initial choice of faction.

There won't be any kind of portrait customization or design your own faction, at least not in the initial release, though the animated character art and ship and station art are much better than in DW1.

There is the choice of faction and government type as well as a similarly wide range of galaxy setup options as in DW1, but this area was not one we made changes to for DW2.

The italicised part isn't a concern at all - I'm concerned about gameplay rather than aesthetics - I'm a fan of the original Distant Worlds because of the gameplay, not because of its looks.

As far as I'm concerned, playstyle should be separated from the aesthetic design of a given faction.
