Clark was bombed but little damage to the airfield again. Thunderstorms. We continue to try. 2 fresh divisions and some armor from Manila start to move into already over-stacked Clark. Only brute force is going to take it.

Zeros on LRCAP caught the B-17Ds trying to bomb Japanese troops near Malacca. 5 Fortresses were shot down.

I underestimated how long it would take to reload troops at Wake to go to Midway. The armor unit has been loading and its taking forever. No naval support combined with a size 1 port equals very slow loading. The infantry unit will start to load tomorrow. I will probably go without most of the motorized support.

Invasion shipping will approach Luganville. They'll probably come up a hex short. Carriers are covering. 2 of the task forces got minor D/L, maybe from SigInt. OPilot probably knows we're coming with something, and not subs.

Sturgeon spotted xAKs passing Milne Bay, heading to Rabaul. Nearby, an empty Rossel Island was invaded.

In Malaya, Japanese bombers hit enemy troops in clear terrain at Port Dickson. Similarly, enemy bombers hit Japanese troops in clear terrain at Port Swettenham. I had the area covered with LRCAP yesterday, and it worked. OPilot tried a different target today. I expected no bombing after yesterday. LRCAP ordered again.

Japanese carrier aircraft sank AVP Avocet and AVP Swan at Efate. Setting up seaplane bases for search, no doubt.

Having little luck with my many subs east of Hawaii. They are in a long line about a dozen hexes east and northeast. They've spotted some cargo task forces, but hit nothing so far. Today I-19 fired 2 torpedoes at xAK Eldorado. The enemy task force was headed east. I'm using the subs as a wolfpack, concentrating in the projected path of a convoy when it is spotted. It worked today, except that the torpedoes missed. Subs are ordered back to the line.

On Luzon, some enemy troops have pulled out of Clark and moved into Bataan. Clark now has 14 units with 41420 men, 290 guns and 127 vehicles. Clark's stacking limit is 40000. Bataan now has 26 units with 50060 men, 420 guns and 80 vehicles. Bataan's stacking limit is 45000. The 2 reinforcing Japanese divisions are moving into Clark and will should get there today. Winning the fight at Clark will force all of the enemy back into Bataan, which will become severely over-stacked. Then the question will be whether to go to Bataan to dig them out, to make Manila's port available, or pin the enemy at Bataan with minimal forces and move out the rest of the troops elsewhere. I don't know what I'll do yet.

Tsiaotso is a dot base near Chengchow, China. I believe it is rough terrain. The enemy has pulled out of the nearby bases for the most part, headed north to safety. They could attack here. I don't know if the 110th Division can hold. It has level 2 forts. The enemy holds the dot base. I'm sending bombers to hit the enemy troops.

Luganville is invaded. It was empty. Multiple Japanese task forces were seen passing by Allied dot bases to the southeast of Luganville, and the ships were seen during the day. It sure looks like they are headed to Suva. They are not. They turn for Noumea today.

Got an uncharacteristically bad bombardment at Clark. There may be a couple enemy artillery units there that just moved from Bataan. Not sure.

A Japanese armor unit was at Malacca, having moved in from the north in an attempt to cut off enemy troops to the northwest. The armor didn't get there in time for that. Now the armor got kicked back north by the enemy stack heading for Singapore.

I-171 spotted battleship Warspite and 2 destroyers northeast of Pearl Harbor. 4 torpedoes were fired at the battleship, and one hit.

First attack at Clark. Odds were good. Forts were reduced. Casualties were terrible. Japanese had over 75000 men in a hex with a stacking limit of 40000. The Allies had just over 42000 men. One division was hurt worse than the others, and will move to Manila to recover and help the over-stacking situation. The second reinforcing division just moved into Clark and didn't participate in this attack. Artillery will fire for a day or two while the infantry recovers from high disruption.

An undefended Luganville is captured. Search float planes are sent there. Noumea will be invaded today.

Ships will leave Wake, headed for Midway.

An evacuated Wenchow is captured on the Chinese coast.

Interesting day.

I-171 was spotted by 2 US destroyers in the area that Warspite was torpedoed yesterday. Later I-171 fired 2 torpedoes at one of the destroyers, Kane, but missed. I-170 then spotted 3 destroyers in that area, and missed destroyer Hatfield with 4 torpedoes. I-169 then spotted Warspite and 3 destroyers, but also battleship New Mexico. 4 torpedoes were fired at New Mexico, and 2 hit. New Mexico was seen on fire. Warspite was showing no damage from yesterday's torpedo hit.

Battleships Mutsu and Yamashiro moved into Noumea to protect the landing. They ran into AM Chevreuil and Chevreuil was sunk.

2 US APDs were spotted south of Noumea. 18 Vals attacked in moderate rain. APD Waters was hit with a bomb.

Noumea was invaded. The 4th Marine Defense Battalion fired on the landing ships, doing minor damage to xAK Sumatra Maru (SYS 15/FLOT 4/ENG 0/FIRE 0) and moderate damage to xAK Victoria Maru (SYS 37/FLOT 18/ENG 4/FIRE 29). Victoria Maru may burn up. All troops were unloaded. The remaining ships have lots of supply to unload. I have battleships there, but I didn't bombard, as I didn't know if there was anything worth bombarding. The BBs are ordered to do so today, and the troops will attack.

I find the situation at Noumea very interesting. Smaller units on both sides. Battleships will bombard, and carrier bombers will hit the troops if there are no naval attack missions. I think the Japanese will prevail, but I can't be sure. Here's the order of battle:

I should have included a cruiser with the xAKs still unloading supply at Noumea. Yamashiro and Mutsu bombarded Noumea, but mainly fired at the enemy base force, not the Marine Defense Battalion. The Marines got many hits on the Japanese xAKs. 2 sank outright. Another will burn up soon. 2 others are damaged. Some supply was unloaded though.

Japanese carrier bombers hit Allied troops on Noumea, doing very little damage in heavy rain.

The first attack at Noumea didn't go well. There's a possibility that I didn't order one of the SNLF units to attack, as it had 0 disruption afterwards, while the others had a usual amount from the attack.

No sign of the enemy battleships nearing Hawaii. They made it to safety. 2 Japanese subs took moderate damage patrolling very near Pearl Harbor.

Japanese cruiser force bombarded Noumea, causing 217 casualties and hit AMc Samuel Benbow with a shell in port. It probably sank. Carrier bombers hit enemy troops, causing only 14 casualties.

Dolphin sank xAK Tokyo Maru at Tulagi. It was unloading fuel unescorted, as the escort had to leave the task force in order to the cargo ship to dock at the size 1 port. Subs are still able to roam fairly freely, with no Japanese air units trained enough in ASW yet. I'm working on that.

I-164 sank AMc Lawoe just southwest of Oosthaven. The sub is looking for tankers that may be pulling oil out of Oosthaven, with Palembang unavailable due to risk.

The enemy evacuated Nanyang without a fight, moving north into the woods. I'm fine with that.

Clark is taken. I'm more than fine with that.

British task force spotted east of Oosthaven, between Batavia and Palembang. Could be headed to Singapore to cause trouble. OPilot has maintained some air control over Singapore with just Buffaloes, due to ineffective bombing of the airfield, and that he rarely flies the Buffalos on CAP. He's using them mostly as escorts for Blens, or just sitting them on the ground. He could move a surface group in to help protect Singapore, if he thinks he can keep my bombers away. I move the big Zero group from Luzon back to Malaya for sweeping Singapore. Bettys are moved to Malaya, and paired with a smaller Zero escort set to range 14. I'll risk flying to Singapore or Palembang. There were other task forces seen near the British TF.

Troops unloading at Koumac and Koumac was captured, and La Foa was invaded. It was undefended also.

Midway invasion shipping moved to within 3 hexes of Midway. A big task force of small ships was spotted fleeing Midway to the east.

S-39 moved into Port Moresby. I've had a big xAP task force there for days, loading the infantry division there. S-39 fired 4 torpedoes at huge transport xAP Kashima Maru and one hit. The transport is SYS 11/FLOT 40-23/ENG 1/FIRE 0. The task force will now leave and head to Rabaul to unload. It has about half of the division loaded. Need to move out and come back later for the rest.

Bettys from Davao bombed Cebu's port. I knew there were MTBs there. I finally ordered the bombers in. 5 MTBs were sunk. No CAP there.

La Foa was captured. No escape for the enemy at Noumea now.

The enemy evacuated Loyang in China just as the Japanese attacked. Forces are ordered to move towards Sian and to Nanyang to threaten Sian from the south. The enemy dot base just northeast of Loyang is now very over-stacked, with about 120,000 men. The stacking limit is far less. May be 60,000. Not sure. Regardless, the Chinese will burn some extra supply while they walk out to the north without a road to use. Sallys will bomb these troops to slow them down and maximize the supply burn.

Cruisers Aoba and Kiso and 3 destroyers bombarded Midway. A few Catalinas were damaged and 50 casualties caused. Midway was then invaded. In the landing, xAK Arabia Maru was hit several times by shells fired by the 6th Marine Defense Battalion. The ship will probably be lost, with SYS 73 and FIRE 46. All troops and tanks were unloaded.

Japanese carrier bombers hit Midway's airfield and troops. 36 casualties, minor airbase damage, and a B-17D destroyed. B-17 at Midway? That was not expected.

Then another surprise. SBDs with F4Fs attacked invasion shipping at Midway, flying from Midway. My carriers were to the southeast, in a forward defense, not covering the transports. I almost always cover the transports. OPilot knows this. It never crossed my mind that he'd bring in bombers with an imminent invasion. He did. It was either daring or foolish. Maybe both. 2 xAPs were hit by a bomb each. One is on fire and may burn up.

2 SBDs then flew from Midway to attack the Japanese carriers to the southeast. 22 Zeros were on CAP, and both bombers were shot down.

The Japanese then shock attacked with the landing at Midway.

The price was paid for having planes at Midway. Besides the 2 SBDs that were shot down, another 20 were lost on the ground, as were 12 F4F-3s, 8 PBY-5s and 7 B-17Ds. Maybe OPilot didn't realize that a landing would cause a shock attack that could take the base immediately. Maybe he didn't see the transports coming. I'm not sure. Maybe he just rolled the dice and wanted to defend with everything he could. I don't know why there were B-17s there though. These 7 were captured and will be used for some long range strategic bombing. I wish! I remember reading that the Japanese did capture a B-17 in the war. Don't know what they used it for.

The Guards Mixed Brigade immediately starts to reload onto the transports. A base support unit is a few days out to the west. It will pick up the tanks after unloading. A smaller infantry unit will move to Midway in a bit.

Taking Midway could set the alarm bells ringing at Pearl Harbor. I have no intention to move towards Pearl, but the threat is there. I hope that more men and material ends up defending Hawaii instead of everything being sent to the South Pacific. My plan is just to threaten and delay here.

Sorong was invaded. A Japanese cruiser force was escorting and sank an AVP at Sorong. Sorong is not defended.

Pesky Chinese A-29s have been flying out of the Chinese capital, hitting Japanese troops in clear terrain near Nanyang. I moved the small Tojo unit to the area. They intercepted but did not get to the bombers. The Tojos were based 3 hexes south of Nanyang and couldn't get there in time. I move the Tojos to Nanyang itself, and order a base support unit to march north to Nanyang.

The British cruiser force, spotted near Oosthaven, bombarded Malacca. It's clear terrain. Clear terrain always draws OPilot's attention. 775 casualties as a division takes a pounding. The British task force retired towards Palembang, stopping just short of the base. My Bettys didn't fly though. The Brits were in severe weather, which probably prevented a strike. Maybe next time.

A brutal day in the sub war, as the US "S" subs wreak havoc. S-41 fired 4 torpedoes at destroyer Hatsushima near Port Moresby but missed. Hatsushima is escorting big xAPs. S-40 fired 4 torpedoes at light cruiser Kashima, getting one hit.

S-18 hit xAP Takatiho Maru with a torpedo at Midway. The ship was loading part of the infantry unit that just took Midway. Takatiho Maru will now split off and start unloading the fragment already on the ship.

Near Milne Bay, S-39 hit big transport xAP Kachidoki Maru with torpedo. Some men are lost. Then S-40 hit xAP Kashima Maru in the same area.

Too much success for the "S" boats. The ASW capabilities of the Japanese right now are next to nothing. In the next month, I will have trained air ASW units, but not yet. Every non-mined port is a sub free-for-all. And "S" boat torpedoes work. OPilot deserves credit for their use so far.

Yamashiro and Mutsu bombarded Noumea. 408 casualties and minor base damage.

Zeros swept Palembang at long range. Hurricanes were defending. 14 Hurricane IIb Trop's were shot down, without loss to the Japanese. Was hoping to see the British cruisers at Palembang and get a shot at them with some Bettys after the Zero sweep, but nothing seen there.

42 Sallys bombed enemy troops at very over-stacked Tsiaotso. 3 H81s were defending, on LRCAP from far away Sian. Despite the range and only having 5 minutes to get to the bombers, the Flying Tigers did get there, and shot down 5 Sallys. 196 casualties done by the bombers, and more importantly, they are continuing to slow the enemy retreat from the very over-stacked hex. Lack of supply is a real worry for the Chinese once the Burma Road is cut.

xAP Takatiho Maru sank at Midway. OPilot admitted that he did not see my transports headed to Midway, and thought my carriers were just raiding. My mistake of not resetting my Kates from their ground attack at Wake may have inadvertently helped OPilot think I was just raiding, as I bombed from long range and with just Kates, a different method of operation from my usual.

At Milne Bay, a size 0 port, I have 2 xAPs trying to unload troops before the ships sink. Both are in escort mode, and can only be changed to transport mode, which I don't want. One, despite having the unload troops option grayed out, is showing that it is starting to unload troops there. The other ship, in a separate task force, did not start to unload troops. Both ships have critical damage. I don't know why one has started to unload and the other hasn't. Neither can make it to another port before sinking. I'll wait and see what happens to them today, hoping to get a fragment of troops unloaded from each.

Subic Bay was cleared of the enemy, leaving only Bataan with enemy troops on Luzon. Speaking of Bataan, had an odd event there today. I have a big stack of units moving from Clark to Bataan. They are moving in movement mode. A few artillery units got a bit ahead of the others and advanced into Bataan. Most of those immediately fled back to Clark, losing a few devices and taking disruption. The 2nd Ind. Art Mortar Battalion, however, was "wiped out by attrition". I've never seen this before. The closest thing that I have seen before was an artillery unit mistakenly making a river crossing into an enemy hex, and having it flee back, without loss. I've never seen a unit destroyed by movement only, not in combat. There's no river crossing into Bataan.

The lesson is to use the follow order. Infantry and armor, and the rest of the artillery, will move to Bataan today. And hopefully stay there.

Sturgeon hit xAK Naples Maru with 2 torpedoes at Tulagi. One was a dud. The ship sank, loaded with part of an naval guard unit for Noumea. Near Shanghai, Seal hit xAK Maebasi Maru with a torpedo. The ship is just one hex from Shanghai, and moderately damaged, so it should make it to port. Shanghai has 300 mines so Seal probably won't go there. So, 2 out of 3 flawed torpedoes worked. OPilot is having great luck with his subs this week.

In the woods, near Hankow, 2 Chinese corps and a HQ are completely isolated. I've closed off all but one hex side, and that will be closed shortly. The attack today didn't go great, but showed that the enemy is out of supply, and now it's less of an offensive force. I will leave 2 regiments for now to pin the enemy, while the rest move out for other uses. The Chinese here will become a bomber training target.

Bettys flew to Singapore and sank a tiny MMS and a tiny AMc. One was hit by flak. Some bombing in China, nothing major. The attack at Noumea is waiting for reinforcements on the way from Tulagi. The best news is that enemy subs didn't sink anything today. They are still patrolling Japanese ports though.

Loading at Midway continues. When complete, the covering carriers will move to the Marshalls to cover minor landings there. Then on to join the other carriers near Noumea. Then we step up the hunt for the US carriers. I want that fight to occur as soon as possible.

Aichi HA-60 engine was accelerated to 9/42. First technological advancement of the war.

I found this very disappointing. This could have been so much more decisive. The only explanation for all of the missed bombs and torpedoes, and some planes not dropping at all, is weather. Severe storms. The pilots are the best of the best. No enemy CAP. Only the weather prevented the destruction of these ships.

18 carrier Zeros swept Suva, finding 18 P-36As and 18 F2A-3s. It wasn't a fair fight, with 12 Mohawks and 6 Buffaloes shot down, for the loss of one Zero. No shipping was spotted in the area, so no naval bombers flew. The damaged enemy cruiser force did not move towards Suva, but it wasn't expected to.

Zamboanga is invaded but not attacked yet. Once more supply is unloaded, we'll attack. It will be the Sasebo 1st SNLF and III/81st Naval Guard against the II/43rd PS Inf Battalion.

Carriers, battleships and cruisers will retire from the Suva area and move northwest near Efate. All ships are in need of fuel. The carriers are in need of sorties. There are AKEs at Koumac, Luganville, Tulagi and Rabaul. Only Rabaul is bigger than a size 1 port. The carriers may need to go all the way back to Truk for sorties.

The Japanese carriers will leave the Midway area and head to Truk.

A small Japanese unit landed at undefended Hollandia on New Guinea.

Japanese artillery attack at Bataan. Lots of casualties. Due to over-stacking? Seems like losses are increased in combat when over-stacked. I know that supply use goes up when over-stacked. It's just my observation that combat losses may also.

I had moved a couple of subs to the west side of Java, hoping to find tankers pulling oil from Oosthaven and Tjilatjap. The sub near Oosthaven was spotted immediately and had to move back to deeper water, and hasn't spotted any tankers. I-162 spotted tanker Aldegonda near Tjilatjap today and hit it with 2 torpedoes. One was a dud. The tanker was not loaded but may have sank after combat.

S-23 is at Midway. Destroyer Yugiri hit it with a depth charge in the shallow water. S-23 won't sink, but this will run it back to Pearl Harbor.

Nells bombed enemy troops east of Pegu. Japanese troops cross the river and win the fight.

OPilot continues to have good luck in the sub war. S-36 hit xAK Yahiko Maru at Port Moresby, sinking the ship after combat. The ship was unloading supply. Tarpon hit AO Ondo at Luganville, sinking the ship after combat. Ondo had some fuel loaded. It had refueled carriers near Koumac and had moved to Luganville to finish unloading. Tarpon also had a dud hit. I estimate that the US dud rate has been between 50% and 67%, far lower than what is expected.

Some revenge at Koumac, and a close call. S-37 was spotted there by the Yamashiro and Mutsu task force. The sub was spotted on the surface, and a gunfight began. The battleships hit the sub several times with the big guns. I was very worried, as a surfaced sub can fire off many torpedoes in the surface battle. Fortunately, S-37 fired no torpedoes. It may have been out of them. The sub was definitely sunk, becoming the first confirmed Allied sub lost. OPilot has been winning the sub war.

Japanese battleships bombarded Noumea. 269 casualties and minor base damage. The ground attack will resume when a reinforcing unit finishes the walk south from Koumac.

A Japanese cargo task force ran into ACM Colonel Harrison west of Bataan. The ACM is fleeing from Bataan. An xAK hit ACM with a shell.

Missing the oilers at Midway was a shame. I have done it more than once.

Having oilers there means he could simply have been setting up a sub base too...figure Allies are very familiar with IJN shipping routes.

Or perhaps pondering an early strike on Hokkaido.

Speaking of shipping, how is draining of Hokkaido and Sakhalin going? Are they accumulating resources and oil daily still?

The oilers at Midway turned out to be YOs, not AOs, and some were sunk when my carriers approached. He definitely had tried to set up a sub base at Midway. I sank an AS there very early on.

I have a very efficient operation going on at Hokkaido and Sakhalin. OPilot had luck here too, early on, with subs, sinking some xAKs carrying resources. I'm now taking a very unexpected routing back to Ominato and other ports, while having a patrol boat ASW task force on the expected route south of Sakhalin. OPilot hasn't found my new routing so far.

My first air ASW units are moving to needed bases now.

5 Japanese cruisers bombarded Noumea, doing light damage. Catalinas are spotting my task forces north of Koumac. The Cats could be at Noumea or at some other base in the Efate area.

OPilot has gone after an AV in Kuantan's port before, getting a bomb hit that did very minor damage. He went back again today, getting 2 bomb hits, and now AV Sagara Maru may burn up. Recon float planes were bases at Kuantan. My fighters are in great demand and I didn't prioritize Kuantan.

OPilot went after another target of opportunity, Koumac. LB-30s flew from somewhere in Australia to bomb the port. A bomb hit destroyer Shiokaze, causing heavy damage. No fighter cover here yet, with no airfield, and the carriers have retired towards Truk. OPilot was probably going after the AKEs that he knows are there.

S-36 sank AMc Kyokei Maru at Port Moresby. There's getting to be a graveyard of ships there from the S-boat scourge. O20 hit medium tanker Meizan Maru at Miri. The tanker was heavily damaged and had FIRE 99. With fuel still loaded, there's no chance of survival at Miri, a size 2 port. The tanker is scuttled. Meizan Maru had just returned from taking fuel from Miri to Babeldaob, around the north of Luzon for safety.

In a month and a half of war, the displayed ships have been sunk by Allied subs. Note the number of ships sunk by subs with "defective" torpedoes. A good number of those ships sunk were carrying troops too. It's felt brutal. I don't know if he's over-achieving or if I am just being too sensitive to the losses. I feel, as the Japanese, that my early game needs to be flawless, and every loss hurts. I expect to lose everything later in the war, but not now.

[EDIT: Forgot to mention that damaged xAP Kashima Maru made it to Rabaul and was unloading troops when it sank there. It had made it to safety, and would have survived if it could have disbanded into port, but it needed to unload troops first. The ship had been torpedoed at or near Port Moresby.]
