Okay
just a info request on damage and repairs
If I do not repair major damage, especially engines, does the damage increase over time so that I really now have to out that ship into repair mode? I do know that operations in the NOPAC area will cause operational damage to ships that must be expected and repairs to be planned for.

At the moment, once a ship gets a damage, I look at it. If it is pink, which normally means repair pierside, I am happy to pull that ship off-line for that to happen. It is normally only a few days so I can cope with that.

Probably because of my scarce resources in the first year, as soon as a ship has a red Major note alongside damage regardless of size, I pull it out and send it to be repaired in an appropriate place, normally far to the rear or the nearest AR port. Of course this does impact on ships available to deploy.

Now the ships are starting to flow more freely (Jan 43) am I now too paranoid? What level of damage do the rest of you accept as normal before they pull a ship off-line and send them to the nearest repair facility that can handle it. including forward based ARs?

I will say that this approach seems to have resulted in me still having a number of ships that in RL were sunk. Indeed I have lost only 2 Subs in the first year so my sub fleet is getting rather large.
But at what stage do you all decide a ship has to go to repair in the rear?

AFAIK, only fire will cause an increase in other damage types, by itself, if the ship is in port, and not doing anything else.

However, any sailing may increase System, Flood or Engine damage, and cause minor or major damage, and even more if the ship is moving at flank speed.

In my games, I usually send ships back to port at the latest when they have 10 damage. Running operations with 2, 3, or even 7-8 dmg is possible, but above that, the problems aggregate.

Hi LGKMAS,
When I send mine back to be repaired is based on several factors: Is the ship or sub doing something tactical at the moment & it can not be spared or replaced in this current action? Is its presence at its current location/Area of Operations important enough to risk further damage or loss? Is the ship due for an important upgrade or conversion that could be done when in port for repairs? Is the damage reducing the ship/sub's speed to the extent that it affects the overall TF's speed? Does it need more ammo/fuel anyway? I generally don't use a certain damage amount formula for making my decision. I care more about fire & floatation damage than the other factors, and when floatation damage is 10 or above, I start reviewing my options. There is always a certain amount of "wear & tear" that occur regardless of combat, but I try not to burn them out. Of course, I also pay more attention to carriers & large ships, when they are damaged. I have kept damaged carriers on-station if they are still operating aircraft, and the tactical situation requires their presence. Long story short: "It depends".

Catastrophic events can happen to a ship even if there are no fires.

In my current game, I have a tanker as an operational loss. No smoking allowed on tankers . . .

To answer one of your original questions - from my own observations (not scientific testing) a ship that gets some minor engineering damage and is kept in operation is more likely to have that damage turn into major engineering damage requiring an AR or SY or port 7+ to repair. So as soon as convenient I disband the ship into the port and let the minor engineering damage repair.

Later in the game when there are lots of ARs and large ports, there are so many ships on the Allied side that any of them can be spared to go and repair as soon as they get a point of engineering damage.

Ohhh as Japanese I've become very friendly with Mr.Grounding and Mrs.Fire. There is also foundering I think, but I've never had the "luck" so far.

EDIT: As Allied player I tend to use the ships with even large amount of damages if that serves some kind of operational purpose. I just got a South Dakota BB which ate two torpedoes and still is around doing her shore bombardment duties.
In general, I tend to repair even minor damages if the ship is not in some kind of operation. If she's in some kind of operations, just like the South Dakota BB aforementioned, I try to use them as much as I can and repair them once the operation has ended.

As a matter of routine, I sort the ship list for each turn to discover any ships that have any amount of damage (anything other than green).

My default position is to send such ships back for repair. Though I am mindful of considerations. I have a heavy cruiser that took an aerial torpedo that was performing carrier escort. It is still performing carrier escort as I do not want to lose the cruiser plus the destroyers that would have to accompany it until replacement ships can arrive.

But, generally, damaged ships go in for repair.

I also have a policy of completely cleaning, repairing, and painting ships between each operation. When a flock of cargo ships get back to the USA West Coast, for example, the crews are given a 72 hour pass while the ships are emptied, cleaned, painted, repaired, and reloaded. Task forces are the same - a few days to pound out the dents and to cover the holes and then it goes out again.
