There is something especially insidious about these old
unexploded relics. I've seen studies that
conclude the World War One battlefields in
France will still be killing people for a "minimum"
of 500 years hence.

One article describes how a suspected gas shell
is carefully positioned so that it can be rocked
gently back and forth like a baby. The disposal
expert places his ear against the shell casing
and listens carefully. He is trying to hear the
tell-tale swishing noise that signifies the shell
is full of liquid poison gas.

Thus war is able to perpetuate itself.
The original cast may have left the stage
yet the show must go on.

This is the Red Zone in France. The red areas
are where human activities are limited by law. Much of
it has been allowed to revert to nature since it
is too contaminated. In this sense, it reminds me
of Chernobyl.

A load of French potatoes made it to Hong Kong. There was a grenade in it.

The map actually shows the devastated areas immediately after the war. Much progress has been made since then, and the "Zone Rouge" has been shrunk considerably. That being said, restricted areas are still there, and some of them do not even revert to nature: nothing can grow in the contaminated soil.

A German "potato masher" grenade?

No, it was round. There is a picture in the article:

World War One grenade among potatoes at Hong Kong crisp factory
3 February 2019

quote:

A World War One-era German hand grenade has been found among a delivery of potatoes shipped from France to a crisp factory in Hong Kong, police say.

The muddy device, which was 3in (8cm) wide, was "in an unstable condition" because it had been discharged but had failed to detonate, officials said.

I remember seeing one of these French bomb disposal operations on the telly. They showed a rusty looking shell they'd uncovered. The expert described that although it looked old and rough, inside it was shiny and precise; just as it had left the factory. It was supposed to explode but for some reason the chain of events for that to occur hadn't happened. Hence, the slightest bump or knock could make it do so.

Not to mention the giant explosive mines that were "lost"; one of which was detonated by lightning in 1955.

And on the german side, we keep finding bombs from 50kg/100lbs upward to things like these

(HC 4000 british aerial mine) inside the city limits of our major cities, or under autobahns, at construction sites... Noone knows how many of these things still exist in the soil below the big cities.
