Hello everyone,

Neutrality... we tried it. Didn’t work out so well.

Well. It also depends on your neighbours. And your ability to fight back. Alone, or with help.

Our ability to fight back ? We’re screwed...

Help ? We had the French rushing to our defense ... yeah, we’re even more screwed...

I think we were rather good during the first years of WWII to fake that we had a good defence. And later on, when this got more dicey, we actually had a decent defence. And Germany didn't really have a lot of extra units over to invade Sweden at that point.

For example, my grandfather got called into the Army during the German invasion of Norway. He was sent to the Norwegian border. Once there he was sent to guard the border. He complained that he hadn't been given any weapon so they gave him a stick that was supposed to look as a rifle from the distance... He could, from time to time, see the German guards in the distance...

Note that one reason for the rifle shortage was because the Swedish rifles in the reserve storage had been 'sold' to Finland and had yet to be fully replaced.

Interesting story.

I haven’t read on the subject for a long time, but as far as I remember, only the Allied powers had plans to occupy the iron-mining region of Sweden, as the Germans were all too happy to buy the ore.

The United States sold half a million rifles to the UK after Dunkirk. Then, when the US mobilized and drafted a military, the men trained with broomsticks because there were not enough rifles to go around. Not only that, the rifles sold to the UK were a different caliber than their usual rifles so they equipped the Home Guard. Artillery went as well. You can see the result of that in the Pacific . . .

Anni-Frid Prinzessin Reuss von Plauen is the result of the German occupation of Norway, Narvik specifically.

Yeah, but you guys never seemed to realize that you are stuck 'between a rock and a hard place'. Neutrality is never going to be an option.

Weren't you created to be a buffer zone between that 'rock and a hard place'. That unfortunately means you have to choose a side. No?

Those rifles were the Springfield. At that time we were already transitioning to the Garand.

The British used WWI era Lee-Enfield rifles right through WWII and post-war fighting in Burma and Malaya. (maybe even Korea too!) They did get some Brens and Stens in their units, but most riflemen had this sturdy but heavy rifle to lug around. Fortunately it was reliable and accurate.

The Springfield would still have been useful for training purposes. The US Marines used Springfields on Guadalcanal. Think of how many units may not have able to deploy because of the lack of equipment.

The idea was for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, after 1815, to create a buffer between France and Prussia. We rebelled against the Dutch 15 years later, and were tolerated to exist by the Great Powers on the condition to remain neutral. The Greater Netherlands could have represented a good deterrent to an attack by either neighbor, but the small Belgium could only rely on the will of the Great Powers to enforce our neutral independence, despite all appearances. As soon as the GP were set on a confrontation, we went from a buffer to a battlefield. Picking a side would have served for naught...

Finally, after the wettest winter recorded at RDU airport, we are looking at a string of dry days ahead. I have high hopes they can dig and pour our foundation soon!

We have a train line that runs behind the rear of our property line - freight only. About 1/4 mile away from the house. Trains run mostly at night. I like the sound of the train horn, not too loud but we have a little ridge to deaden the noise. Went to have a glass of vino with the neighbors who live on a hill above us. Further away from the tracks but WAY louder up there.

Thank you ridge....

One of the first things I learned when I moved from a house in a treed neighbourhood to my 18th floor apartment is that distance above ground does NOT result in less noise - quite the opposite! The biggest trees in the area top out at nine floors below me. Then about five years ago they built a new fire/ambulance station about 200 meters away ...
