An East Front game where the goal is to move the frontline.
The units would serve as pressure points that attempt to deform
the frontline in their favor.

So you would assign units to particular sections of the frontline
with doctrines (assault, probe, defend, etc) and then press a button
to watch a weeks worth of movement/fighting occur. You would not see
the units themselves but a dynamic animation of the frontline being
pushed back/forth. You could see pincers form and reach out to touch
each other, much as an amoebas's pseudopods reach out to surround and
engulf prey.

It would be a lot like a physics/weather (hi/low pressure system)
simulator but with military parameters instead of meteorological ones.
Powerful units would act as high pressure spots on the frontline and
weak units like low pressure spots.

A game where you are the captain of a Galaxy class or a Sovereign class starship on a five-year mission. To explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.

You will to manage your crew like Silent Hunter III.
You will have to discuss with others to resolve plots.
Away team of course
Fighting with the enemy of the federation

To sum up, something like Star Trek Bridge Commander or Star Trek Starfleet Command but with some plots to resolve, away teams, diplomatic missions.
And of course a free roaming in the ship.

Do any of the existing Star Trek games allow you to walk around
inside the interior wherever you want to go? I downloaded a 3d
model of the Enterprise that had that functionality but it was
not a game, was mostly empty except for notable places like the
Bridge and Sickbay. So, it did not feel like a living ship but
more like a stripped derelict.

It would have to be an offline game. I have satellite internet so
real time multiplayer is impossible for me.

Did not find one so far. Only the bridge.

Silent Hunter III is one of the few games I have permanently installed.
One reason I love it is because all the user mods eventually created
an entire type VII interior. So, you can run up and down the
length of your boat without encountering walled-off areas. Maybe
it is only chrome (that you can stare into the toilet) but I enjoy having that option.
Think I read one sub was nearly lost because of a malfunctioning toilet.

A Skyrim-like game that uses Dwarf Fortress' engine to create and manage the world, but Skyrim-level graphics to portray it (and you inside it).

Moddable, of course.

It actually did happen to a German U-boat in WWI.

A remake of the PC version of AH Third Reich/Advanced Third Reich would be nice. If rights to the AH game cannot be resolved, there's also GMT's A World At War. AWAW already has the Warplanner software to play A3R and AWAW, so it should be possible to enhance this with a challenging computer opponent. Perhaps also with options for classic Third Reich. That would be great.

Well, if I deduct any mention of VASL and or VASSAL.

It would be one of three variations on a thought. Steel Panthers Mega Campaigns (yes, I know, the name sort of exists). But it would be made from the ground up to install the base game, the Mega Campaigns, AND install in such a way that you either played the base game and Megas, or you played Enhanced and the Megas. One installation, both choices available. Sort of a dual install. A simplified install of all known user scenarios. Modern OS support. Modern hardware support. No hoops to jump through. Hey, you said dream game eh.

I consider Steel Panthers to be one of the most all-encompassing experiences. Ability to play anywhere in WW2. Norway, Finland, Russian Far East, Burma, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Aleutians, North Africa, Italy, all the usual Russian Front locations, Normandy, the Blitzkrieg years, Market Garden, Southern France, anything. It has only one setback. It was made in 97. And it shows.
So variation 2, is Second Front ends up with the same level of inclusiveness. Again, I am talking dream games. Maybe Jo can manage it in time eh :)

Variation 3. Steel Tigers ends up as inclusive as Steel Panthers and doesn't end up selling out to 3d or real-time, or any other crap that was never in any fashion what Steel Panthers was.
Because I think most of us waiting for Steel Tigers, are only wanting a Steel Panthers that run properly on modern computers. I'm not interested in anything that isn't. I do NOT care what modern computers CAN handle, I only want what I want to play. It takes some effort, but, I CAN make Steel Panthers run on my modern computer. Until MS screws up the OS yet again of course. And I'm not entirely happy with 10. I leave the system offline just so it can't auto-update and bugger up the system unwelcome. I've already had to rip out updates once.

I'm only talking dream games here that I think CAN happen, but are unlikely to happen.

Looks like we also want this :)

Think of a strategy game that would go to the operational then the tactical level. You could have teams of players possibly doing both the operational and the tactical simulations . . .

I am surprised you did not even mention a computer ASL game.

I agree with what you are saying on Steel Tigers. I don't want 3D. I want a Steel Panthers for modern computers.
I also want to play WW2 day one meaning all sides, all countries, all terrain features.

I would hate to see a DLC for Pacific, a DLC for Russian front, ...

Steel Panthers was having everything day one.

Computer ASL is basically ASL played via VASL.

Valor and Victory or Second Front is going to be amazingly close though.

And more than anything for Steel Tigers, I would like the map scale and the unit scale to match. I don't want to see a big tank running on a tiny road. I want the tank to match the scale of the road.

This is another gaping hole in the PC Wargaming OOB:

Strategic Vietnam 60's - 70's.

Seems a little bit odd that not a single
dedicated strategic game exists for the Vietnam War?
(At least I am not aware of any for PC)

Yes, I know there are tactical games of various
sorts and maybe Art of War scenarios but not anything
custom built and dedicated to the big picture.

Is it simply because it is felt to be an unpopular subject
and would not sell well?

I confess the subject had scant interest for me until
I read Max Hastings book.

I feel a card driven geo-political layer meshed with
traditional military mechanics would be great!

"Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa Vietnam"?

  • A series of WWII Pacific & CBI games at the operational level, modeling land, air, and naval equally well, and deeply. Think the Solomons Campaign, the New Guinea Campaign, Philippines '42, Philippines '44, Malaysia '42, Burma all years, etc.

  • Likewise, a series of games individually covering the major ACW land campaigns at the deeply operational level. Think the Valley Campaign(s), the Vicksburg Campaign, the Peninsula Campaign, the Overland Campaign, the Gettysburg Campaign, Bragg's Invasion of Kentucky '62, the Atlanta Campaign, etc.

  • A Europa Universalis game Done Right.

This continually astounds me that no one has ever tried to do this for commercial release. Ever.

Deep, WEGO (or even turn-based), hex-and-counter strategic level Civil War and Napoleonic Wars. Frank Hunter's game came closest for the ACW but still far off. Almost flabbergasted that no Nappy game like this has ever existed (no, the Commander series game I refuse to count). Seems to be highly reasonable wants that will apparently never be fulfilled.

Dream Game? There is one I’d love to see (and may have mentioned it previously)

War in the Mediterranean June 1940 – May 1943 (so would start with Il Duce’s fateful decision to take Italy to war on 10 June 1940 – and end with the Allies evicting the Axis from North Africa)

The game would be a highly detailed air, land and sea game. Daily turns.

For the land and air component, I would want squadron and battalion sized units with NATO symbols.

For the naval element the game would have almost a game within a game. The naval battles would be fought on an almost real-time basis. The units employed would be worked out and the orders given. Movement would then speed through until point of first contact – at which point phases are played out until contact is lost and the time speeds up until contact is made once more.

Great attention to detail would be made to ensure that all the variables that upset many a plan could intervene - naval/air communication issues / intercepting enemy comms or part thereof / bad weather / mechanical issues.

The political machinations of that theatre would be represented in all its myriad of opportunities and costs – or for those seeking more realism, then there would be an ‘historical’ scenario; The British refuse to give up Malta, but the Axis don’t understand why they should invade. There in a nutshell is why the war developed as it did and was so costly to the RN and such a wasted opportunity for the RM.

The game would be aesthetically spectacular; rich, colourful, easy on the eye with plenty of zoom levels for us old timers.

I can’t wait – when does this get made Matrix?

A conversion or similar type of game of the highly detailed Europa series in one PC game covering 1939-1945 at division, brigade and battalion scale of 10 km hexes, ranged artillery, production, political diplomacy, weekly or biweekly turns with leaders, detailed tactical and strategic air war with naval warfare over all of Europe, Russia, Norway, and North Africa, with campaigns and many scenarios, with a highly competitive AI, customizable art work and guaranteed to work for 25 years on any hardware.

    Four games.

A detailed indepth tactical squad based wargame that finally has all the features everyone wants straight off the bat. WEGO or some other form is fine though WEGO prefer. RPG elements. Squads with 1 man casualties like Squad Battles. Detailed comms. Tailor made urban combat mechanics. Multi level buildings, Sewers. Obstacles and IP's. SOP's. Off map arty. Air support. Para drops. Leader stats. Higher Command interaction.

A detailed man vs man scale tactical wargame. Indepth RPG features. Plus all the game above wants.

Detailed WW1 air combat tactical game. Use updated mechanics used in Achtung SPitfire and Flight Commander 2 so the actual pixel pilot skills effecting how well he performs in battle and if he can pull of the desired move you set. Darkwind on steam has a great car combat mechanic that if a z axis was added would be superb for this type of game. Squadron management. RPG features so you become attached to your pilots. Manage high command requests for next day objectives. A and B flight is a scout and C flight two seater recon. Deal with recon, arty spotting, bombing , balloon busting and trench strafing. The better your squadron performs the more skill points you can invest in air crew and the mess or trips to town to help nerves and fatigue etc.

Next a WW1 company trench wargame. Think Sims\Tower Defence\RimWorld\RPG\Prison Architect\Dwarf Fortress. You design your trench system improving over time and you manage your men and officers dealing with the weather, patrols, trench design and building, dug out design, orders from high command, giving leave, putting a man in for medal, defending German raids and patrols, intel gathering, the big push, aftermath of big pushes, different units opposite means sometimes live and let live and other times constant alert needed. If you get through the War maybe three or four have survived through it all and are still with you. Many dead and wounded, others promoted and transferred (you are informed of their deaths or if they win awards or say if join RFC have become an Ace etc to add immersion). You'll be able to see a list of all the men who have passed through your ranks and what happened to them this being updated constantly and be very interesting to read end of war. This game would be full of narrative and immersion. Create clever designed redoubts and see how well they stand upto attack etc. Position your MG's as more arrive over time. Forward liaison officers. Downed Pilots. Fix drainage issues. Fix hygiene issues. Periods in and out of the line. Out of the line arrange baths, football matches and lots of training if possible plus no doubt assimilate drafts. Lots of possibilities. Learn new training methods. New Arty methods men need training about. Mine and underground warfare.

Don't forget the soccer/football game on Christmas Day as well.

On those Silent Hunter Series, i been wanted to try out the Japanese Campaign, sadly they are all locked on USN campaign or scenarios. Heard there were mods or working on it, but they never made it through.

So back on topic, the only game or strategy game i like to see remake or next step would be War in the Pacific: Admiral Edition. This time, please show some actions on the board. Least see and feel what it is like in the real battlefields.

Other than that, i wouldnt mind having Alpha Centauri remade with better engine.

Don't forget the penalty for not attacking the French fleet.

Well that is just one of the many, many what-ifs. But I don't know that there is any tangible evidence that points to a specific penalty:

    - So if one decides there is a penalty for not doing so then what would that be? And based on what? Did this action really make much difference in Washington for example? Yes supposedly it confirmed the British were serious, but did anything happen that wouldn't have otherwise?

    - But then what if the British give the ultimatum, and Gensoul actually does his job (you had one job Gensoul) and gives the full details to Darlan - does that make a difference? Would the game allow a small % chance that Darlan grows a set and does the right thing?

    - But if going down the flights of fancy route, then is there also a small % chance that Somerville says "nah, Gensoul is my bro innit bruv, and bros before er... well that doesn't rhymne. Anyways, this ain't happenin' on my watch dude, I'm outta here"
