All that being said, I’ve watched Dunkirk a few days ago. Not bad for Hollywood, albeit a couple of errors too. Notably the opening scene. Sure, one week before the end of the pocket, the Germans were hardly two streets away from the beach... But the casting of nobodies for the Tommies (and naming the primary POV for the beach scenes « Tommy » was a nice touch), and the senior actors were spot on, especially Mark Rylance. The speech-light scenes were brilliantly directed. So many movie directors feel the need to add useless speech, to fill in the blanks, but this movie shows how the silence (or the music) may replace most of the words. Those words that are spoken have meaning. And, last but not least, how refreshing it is to see a movie without an American hero saving the day, just to appeal to US audiences.
