Does the game take advantage of the number of cores on the Processor and if so would the number of cores effect game calculation time?

No but a better CPU speed and graphics card will probably help.

That surprises me now - WitE is nibbling on the graphic card?

Dont think so.

For what its worth, I run Wite in a pretty old G620 with an integrated GPU. It works fine.

Maybe getting a newer CPU would save me a few seconds on the AI turn resolution. Still, without knowing the code, i would bet there is almost no diference between running wite2 in a high clock frequency dual core like the G6400 and a hexa core like the 10400.

at which point, it is worth making the very strong point, WiTE2 is not #1 with some extra features, its a completely new game.

so at every level from how it impacts on your computer to how it plays, best advice is to set all your WiTE1 assumptions to one side
