True, and this can be managed by stockpiling the Chinese combat squads while allowing replacement of other devices in the unit TOE. A few engineers can help with fort or field fort construction. The support troops help with recovery of disablements and reduction of fatigue.

Status: offline 		Another idea on China: Buy out an Indian Tank unit, and send it to Rangoon. At this point they are worthless, but by the time they march all the way to Chungking, it should be trained up a bit. 254th is a possibility, though you won't have Valentines for it until mid-'42. But Valentine IIIs will neutralize Japanese tanks.

Also, I would buy out all the Chinese units you can, and start marching them to India. You should be able to get 5th Chinese Corps there at least. With plenty of supplies, those units will be large by mid-1942.

Status: offline 		You can also air lift 37mm and 2 pounder AT guns as well.

I would also send some of those British base forces into the mountains of China to include Kunming - they at least have some AAA as well. There may also be a small AAA unit in Burma as well.

Don't through away those Burmese squad units, eventually those turn into Indian '44 squads I do believe.

Air attacks in Malaya continue in order to slow the respective enemy ground forces racing or more precisely crawling to Kluong. The Japanese are way more succesful in this business, while Allied losses continue to be heavy and further attacks will have to be called off.
The 1st Manchester and the 2nd Argylls have reached Mersing, cancelling the Japanese move to Johore. But this sacrifical countermove did not cancel the movement indicators of the Japanese units marching from Mersing to Kluong. Therefore, the Allied units north of Kluong stand little chance to reach Kluong before the Japanese main force does. I am assembling a fleet of small xAPs and xAKL at Singers to try to evacuate the Indian 11th Div by sea via Port Dickson Dunkirk-style - they will probably get massacred by Netties. The 8th Bde of the 9th Indian Division and the other units retreating from Kota Bharu have just reached Temuloh and probably will get crushed by the Japanese units advancing south from Georgetown.

Manila survivors arrive at Midway, including PG Isabel, AV Langley and AS Otus plus a handful of assorted xAPs and xAKs. The AOs and TKs unfortunately did not make it. The small xAKLs has been left in the PI, they will be sacrificed to shuttle supplies from Borneo to Luzon for as long as possible. One Manila TF is still at sea a few hexes east of Luzon in the Philippine Sea and far from being safe - it is the floating drydock "Dewey" which is being towed (and refueled) by three xAKs and heading due East.

My "spoiling attack" against Mersing has been pushed back to Johore, with Japanese troops in hot pursuit. And as feared, the Dunkirk evac of the Indian 11th Div (to Palembang, not Singers which is doomed) has to run a gauntlet of air attacks, subs and mines.

Enemy TFs are being spotted West and East of Ternate, looks like a move against Ambon.

The Japanese keep spreading over the map, undefended Rabaul and undefended Canton Island switch ownership.

The enemy TFs spotted near Ternate are actually heading for Kendari instead of Ambon, Hudsons and Dutch flying boats impale themselves on Mini-KB CAP - Zeros from Zuiho reported. Mini-KB also caught Allied cruisers sent from the "secret base" at Wetar on a fruitless full-speed night dash to Ambon. Finally, Mini-KB sank the AO which just arrived at Wetar to refuel the short-legged Dutch ships. A second AO is on the way, fingers crossed. Other Allied cruisers hidding at Wetar are raising steam for a sortie against Kendari, where Dutch PT boats managed to torpedo a loaded transport.

CAP traps over Manila and Malaya bagged a couple of enemy planes.

No xmas truce in the Pacific.

A Japanese shock attack at Johore Baru has been stopped cold - lucky dice it seems. It looks like the remnants of four brigades - the Aussies and two brigades of the 9th Indian Division plus assorted III Corps troops may make it to Singers. Of course they have no chance to hold the city against the forces arrayed against them. I will try to get as many units out of the doomed city, the infantry battalions are useful to garrison India as most of the current garrison units will withdraw later in the war, and air support and engineers are always welcome. Alas, PPs are at premium because so many really baaaad leaders have to be changed at the start of the war.

The better part of the 11th Indian Division has been "dunkirked" from Port Dickson by small transports and merchantmen to Palembang, with acceptable losses - I was afraid that Netties, cruisers ands subs would really wreak havoc with the largely unescorted evacuation TFs.
Assorted elements cut-off north of Kluong will retreat to the jungles of Central Malaya in order to force the Japanese to hunt them down or to risk having their LOCs blocked.

ABDA cruisers bombard Kendari for minimum effect. At least they did not run into much opposition - a single PC - and escaped retaliation by Mini-KB. However, DD Alden was sunk by a sub one hex short of Soerabaja. The ABDA crusiers will dock for some quick repairs caused by two days of full speed running. At Kendari, Dutch flying boats have been busy from Day 1 to concentrate forces to defend this vital location. Now it is time to rebase and to evacuate the precious air support.

Status: offline 		Situation in China:

Focus of the action is around Nanyang, a race is on to escape encirclement in the open plains and to establish defenses in the woods and hills.

Two Japanese divisions have advanced from Wuchang in the direction of Changhsa and have routed three Corps defending the road hex, but now seem to have stopped. By precaution, most of 9th War Area units which had been deployed South and SE of Changsha to defend the river near Nanchang have been pulled back into Changsha.

3rd War Area units are retreating to Kanshien, where a Japanese Inf Rgt has been stopped just short of the city and is in the process of being surrounded. Wenchow is being defended by detachments of three different Corps, they will do or more likely die.

At 4th War Area, Wenchow is being invested by the Japanese, there is only one weak Corps defending the city, another weak Corps is defending the road to the East to prevent encirclement. I'm afraid I will have to evacuate Wenchow and the 60 points of light industry and their precious supplies. Central Reserve units are still marching south from Chungking to reinforce this War Area.

I have bought-out one of the "temp restricted" Chinese Corps to NCAC and will try to march it via Paoshan and Ledo to the flesh-pots of India to become a 800+ squads Godzilla.

Japan continues to expand into the Central Pacific and Solomons areas - nothing serious yet. The first Transport TFs carrying ground reinforcements for the South Pacific - 1 Army Regiment and 2 Marine Regiments - have refueled at the secret refueling depot in the deep South Pacific and continue on to NZ for reloading into amphib TFs.

In Malaya, the Dunkirk-style evac of the 11th Indian Div from Port Dickson to Palembang continues with little interference. Two deliberate ground attacks at Johore Baru defeated again - amazing! Remaining naval assets - two MTBs - continue to harass enemy ships off Mersing.

In China, rear-guard action at Chengchow while main forces have left to hide in the woods to defend the road to Sian. The retreat of the Chinese units from the Central Plains to Nanyang and beyond is still proceeding well despite enemy air attacks and artillery bombardments - apparently the enemy ground forces are not concentrated enough to risk attacks.

At Johore, only bombardments by the Japanese - apparently no fight left. My ground forces have received orders to fall back to Singers nonetheless. With the fall of Kluong last turn and Kuala Lumpur this turn, all units remaining in Central Malaya are now definetly cut-off from Singers - the slow going along the railroad from Khota Baru never really gave them any chance to make it anyway.

Blenheims on night bombing actually managed to hit something and destroyed a Zero on the ground at Mersing. A few remaining Buffalos still provide LRCAP over the last few Dunkirk-TFs and managed to down four Netties, but couldn't totally prevent ship losses. And lack of numbers on CAP over Singers airfields allowed the Japanese to hit Singers airfields hard. All remaining air asset have now been ordered to the DEI.

Still, the main body of the Indian 11th Division made it to Palembang with acceptable losses. With the fall of Singers only a question of time, I will try to evacuate as many forces as possible from Singers to Palembang, in the hope of causing as much damage to the oil facilities as possible.

ABDA cruisers and DDs will migrate to Palembang when finished with repairs at Soerabaya to try and make any invasion attempt as costly as possible - it is urgent, as Japanerse cruisers did pay a visit this turn.

Ambon invaded, Kendari still a stalemate, air support has been lifted out to go to Palembang to support CAP.

In the PI, air resistance ended, the remaining figter units have been disbanded to have the airframes reappear magically in the pools for use elsewhere. The pilots have been pulled as well and they will magically reappear in fighter units being deployed elsewhere.

In China, still a lot of marching going on, and one overconfident Japanese Inf Regiment got punished.

Finally, KB has been located the hard way sout of Noumea !

Again only bombardments at Johore. Another overconfident Japanese unit mauled in China. Japanese bombing of Singers, Manila and Bataan in order to prevent fort building start in earnest (just after Singers reached fort level 3). Disaster off Palembang, fresh sub-laid minefield discovered the hard way. Sloppy staff work fails to give evacuation orders to air assets on Ambon, 9 Hudson I destroyed in the ground fighting. Pinprick naval bombardments by Allied naval units at Kendari and Enderbury Is. Enemy troops landing at Koumac on New Caledonia! KB off New Zealand!

The invasion of Borneo finally starts, I hope the defenders will destroy a maximum of oil centers before yielding control of Miri, Brunei and Tarakan.

Intel:
Previous report of sinking of DD Shinonome incorrect. Ship sighted and engaged at 75, 89


Naval Operations:
A Japanese CL and a bunch of DDs trolling around the Singers-Palembang sea route sink a bunch of xAKLs shipping supplies from Singers to Palembang - at least the Japanese won't capture those supplies! Evacuation runs from Singers to Palembang will continue nonetheless, the troops and supplies in Malaya will be lost anyway.

Port Moresby bombarded by a division of old CAs. In response, all S-class submarines of the Asiatic Fleet have been ordered from the DEI to Brisbane for operations in the PNG area.

US carriers leave port for a joint training exercise with Marine fighter units embarked.

With KB trolling in the South Pacific, all Allied shipping around the Australia East Coast and New Zealand has been ordered into "safe" ports.


Ground operations:
Amphibious Assault at Norfolk Island - apparently covered by KB. Japan is trying to isolate Australia and/or New Zealand!

In China, rear-guard action at Loyang while the balance of Chineses troops has withdrawn into the woods. The huge stack in the Central Plains has reached Nanyang and is now dispatched to more defensible terrain around Nanyang. The city itself will be abandoned.

In Malaya, thanks to the Mersing gambit, sizeable Commonwealth units have been isolated in Central Malaya. The enemy will need sizeable units himself for mopping-up, which will buy precious time. No sign of imminent attack on Singers.

The Japanese also take their time on Luzon and Mindanao, while the defenders continue to dig-in at Manila, Bataan and Malaybalay.

The first oil ports have been lost, Miri and Brunei. The landing at Tarakan seems to have been stalled thanks to the effective coastal artillery, no enemy ground attacks.


Air operations:
The usual unopposed bombings of Singers, Bataan and troops in China.

A port raid on Batavia sinks an HDML - ouch.

Night bombing attack on Palembang, luckily only one Buffalo destroyed on the ground.

Enemy Zero sweeps over Port Moresby unopposed - no wonder, the only fighters in the entire SWPac area are two recently arrived understrength provisional Warhawk squadrons originally intended for the PI. They are repairing at Sydney, together with the equally provisional Army Dive Bombers units. If KB intends to make a stab against Australia after the Norfolk Island operation, it will find at least some token resistance at Australia's most important harbor.

Both sides have some RL "issues" (for my part, I'm in the process of moving) which impact our available playing time. Furthermore, my cherished opponent Ed told me he's not enjoying playing the Japanese side as much as he enjoyed playing the Allies and finds it hard to motivate himself to do turns. We have agreed to put the game on hold for 3 months and then see if the lure of WITP is strong enough to resume the game.

Status: offline 		The Japanese side is a logistical challenge little understood by those who only play the Allied side. Reading the many AARs here some really embrace the logistic side of it which allows them to change what the Japanese did historically, the Allied can't change what get produced and when like the Japanese can. Others find the logistics to be a grind and overwhelming. I am sure he is fun whacking around the early war Allies but this additional aspect on the Japanese player isn't always every players cup of tea.

I don’t comment every AAR I read. I was interested in seeing another usual IJ player starting an Allied AAR (I’m reading Lowpe’s for much the same reason).

I can understand your opponent, I haven’t really enjoyed my Japanese games very much, compared to the Allied ones. To each his own I guess.

Status: offline 		I usually play the Allies against the AI. But I think that it is important for any regular Allied player to try the Japanese, at least against the AI if nothing else, just to learn the capabilities of that side.

Good luck with moving, that is not fun. My kittens were all upset when I moved. The were highly stressed until I laid down with the computer - then they realized that this was their new home. They then cuddled with me and settled down.

Although a lot of us don't post often (myself included), you do have fans :) .... In fact, I still, to this day, look for updates to your MOD every time I log in, and I do read the AARs that you have.

Your MOD, John's RA, BigB, and of course, JWE, are people (and teams) who spend time building, creating, updating, your great MODs so that the rest of us can enjoy them, and gives us a chance to play "different views" of history.
