Hi folks,

I was looking over the stats of the 'D35 Dragon [Type 45 Batch 2]' and noticed its Fuel types have weights of 8.5 tons (aviation) & 23.3 tons (diesel).

This struck me as a very small amount for a destroyer. So I decided to check another ship for comparison

The F XX Glasgow [Type 26 City] has 80 tons (aviation) & 28 tons (diesel).

So lastly I checked the F236 Montrose [Type 23 Duke] 800 tons (aviation) & 80 tons (diesel).

Firstly do these relatively similar ships really have such varying degrees of fuel - or are they just stat errors..? If they do actually have such massive fuel differences is engine efficiency the main driver?

Secondly does the volume of fuel the ship carry impact on game-play (I don't access to a computer that will run CMO). If it does effect game-play is engine efficiency also considered? e.g. would a ship from 1960 with 25 tons fuel travel as far as a ship from 2020 with 25 tons both at cruise 17kt?

Thanks

Hey, Tom! Thanks for your query.

In answer to your first question, "do these relatively similar ships really have such varying degrees of fuel" -- no, probably not. There's definitely a few wonky fuel values in the DB right now. It's one thing modelling a civilian ship -- they'll almost always have exact fuel capacities listed in their manufacturer spec sheets -- but the military is (understandably) a lot less forthcoming, and it's difficult to find accurate information on fuel capacities. As a result, a lot of the capacities you see are placeholders or approximations.

The good news -- and the answer to your second question -- is that these numbers shouldn't affect more important gameplay values, like the ships' range. Engine efficiency *is* considered, and automatically calculated from provided range-at-speed values (which, fortunately, are usually available with a little digging). If a notional ship from 1960 is recorded as being able to travel 2000nm @ 17kt, the engine efficiency will be set to whatever value is necessary to make that happen even if it's only listed as carrying 25 tons of fuel. Conversely, a notional ship from 2020 that can travel 4000nm @ 17kt will make that on the same 25 tons of fuel, because its engine will have different fuel consumption values.

With that said, such discrepancies in stated fuel capacities between similarly-sized vessels are obviously suboptimal, even if they don't affect operations at all. We're hoping to run a mass review of propulsion and fuel values in the DB at some point; hopefully this -- and similar issues -- will at that point be caught up in our dragnet and rectified.

Hope this was helpful!

Hi Pygmalion,

Really appreciate the detailed, polite and informative response.

I posted the same question on a steam forum so I hope you don't mind me quoting your response?

If I see any information about ship fuel quantities I will submit it on the (Matrix) forum to assist you folks building a better DB.

Thanks

Of course, feel free. DB update requests are always appreciated!
