Japanese depth charges

Japanese depth charges - 4/1/2021 11:58:44 AM

Status: offline 		I have played this game for a long time and I know that type 95 charges detonate above target in non coastal hexes,and Type 95 MOD 2 are effective in open ocean.
Lately though I have been getting combat reports of using Type 95 MOD-2 detonating above target.
Did I miss something?

Status: offline 		Yes, the submarines dived deeper than the depth that the depth charges exploded at.

But all depth charges are good for fishing!

Although it should be called a DuPont spinner.

Hand grenades are safer though. A quarter pound of TNT in a nice, easily throwable, hand held package.

In game or real life?

Unless it's a user made scenario, no sub has a durability highter than 36 (360feet depth), depending on the version of the vanilla scenarios the type 95-2 has a max depth of 295 or 275 (patch 7). The type two has a depth of 476 or 375 (patch 07).
Apart from two Dutch classes (O19 and O21) no Allied submarine has a durability higher than 31.

Not in Babes I guess, there's no sub that has been going deeper than a Type 2 DC could go too and that's in 10/44.

One US sub went over 600' deep. Tang? She radioed in the info so that other subs would know they could go deeper than 300' during evasion.

Status: offline 		Tang was an interesting boat (one of my favorites, likely my favorite). To get taken out by your own fish (circular run) was cruddy but I think 6-8 guys made it into the water. But the Japanese sailors who had just witnessed Tang tear apart their convoy were not kind to the survivors. The skipper, Dick O'Kane, was one of those survivors. Sadly even though it was shallow water the rest of the crew never got out. O'Kane wrote a book later about the (I think) 5 war patrols she did. O'Kane had come from either the Harder or Wahoo - cannot remember which, but I believe Tang ended up with the best record on number of ships sunk (not tonnage).

In any case he wrote 'Clear the Bridge' which I found interesting.

Status: offline 		I looked it up RJ, you are correct. Sad that the Tang, Wahoo and Harder were all lost (as well as the other 49) as they were hard charging boats.

Status: offline 		One particular improvement with the Balao class boats the addition of a new slow, heavy-duty motor that replaced the older high-speed motors and reduction gears of previous classes. Besides increasing reliability and saving space, the new motors eliminated the characteristic loud whine produced by the reduction gear. This motor was ready in time to be installed on new boats commissioned from July 1944 onwards. A quieter boat is harder to find.
