If you can bomb Tokyo, what are the benefits? The enemy pulling as many AAA units back to major Japanese production centers? Possibly fighters and night fighters as well?

I would suggest attacking at 2k feet.

You're saying counterproductive at this time?

2,000 ft would use low ground bombing skill. The pilots are not trained for that. Maybe 5,000 ft?

Nope- 2K feet is the starting point for GrdB level.
EDIT to add: I train my pilots in GrdB at 2000 feet and that is the skill that increases (along with a little Defensive skill).

OK, but what about the low level increasing ops losses?

What do you think about the commencement of night city raids?

I don't know if this is modeled but it appears that it might be but the attacking aircraft do not fly to the target at the attacking height. Can you imagine flying an aircraft at 100 feet for any length of time to strafe a target?

But yes, bomb Tokyo then targets outside of Japan may get easier with fewer fighters and AAA units at those locations. If not then the Home Islands will be less risky to bomb.

I have never noticed low level increasing ops losses during training, but flying low level over flak and through balloon defences is a different story. Single engined aircraft seem to dodge balloons just fine, twin engined aircraft have some issues and four engined aircraft hit lots of them but are not necessarily brought down.

I have never seen balloons cause damage at night. I operate my bombardment spotter FPs at 1000 feet at night all the time with no balloon or flak issues.

Barrage balloons have a maximum height and are only present at airfields of a certain size or larger, both of which factors I forget.

The barrage balloons are also dependent upon the fortification level.

• 1,617 AV at Rahaeng. The troops definitely need to rest at least a couple of days, probably somewhat more, but the hardest part is done. A division and three brigades are about five days away from joining them, if needed.

• 1,602 AV near Ayuthia, and that 4th enemy unit has arrived, no doubt significantly boosting enemy strength. Our troops are still recovering from the most recent assault. The airlift of supply to these units is making a splendid difference.

• 408 AV at Chiang Mai. The troops are rested and supplied so they assault tomorrow.

• Several enemy convoys at Bangkok.

I didn't remember that.

Base level determines whether balloons can be present at all - Port+AF=9 IIRC is necessary.
Forts determine how many balloons there are.
5000 feet is the normal top of deployment but a few may reach 6000 feet. Always that variability to keep some uncertainty in the player's mind! IIRC, AA is like that too - the advertised ceiling can sometimes be exceeded.

• Chiang Mai is abandoned and will be seized tomorrow.

• Our forces at Rahaeng, which include 3x Bde and 1x Div which did not participate in combat, will move immediately on Pisanuloke. The objective is to thwart movement by forces to the north down to Bangkok.

• 1,753 AV near Ayuthia. Supply is good, but tomorrow the Indian 18th cavalry will arrive with a bunch of Sherman V tanks and very little additional stacking cost, so we will next assault the day after tomorrow.

• Several enemy units from up north have already moved by rail into Bangkok.

From those combat reports, it appears a single BB per bombardment TF is the way to go!

Just lucky in a few cases, I think. The other similar speed & gun BB's are off to get upgrades.

I think that might happen if the unit had a lot of squads understrength from KIAs, and then drew a lot of replacement men. The newbies take some time to become functional in the unit.

OK.

The commander is good. Disruption has reduced but is still at least 4 to 5 times that of the most other units.

Our air strikes on that hex have been exacting a bunch of enemy casualties for the last few days. I hope that keeps up.

That DD you torpedoed is one of the big AA DDs with the 8 X 3.9" guns - best AA weapons the IJN has. One torp might not be enough so snoop around the retreat path.

I was skeptical because no fire or heavy damage or smoke on the graphic. Maybe still afloat.
