So, this play through I decided that the Japanese would try to take India in conjunction with the EuroAxis closing the Med and taking Suez.

The CW only managed to get two poor quality territorials into Calcutta with a total of 7 combat factors before the Japanese cut of all communication.

And yet, the Japanese are having a terrible time taking it! (The US has already landed next to Rabaul and Truk while most of the Japanese forces are trying to take India.)

Anyone out there have any suggestions for how best to take India?

You are fighting against 14 factors and are usually halved for crossing rivers. But from the south, there is a swamp hex from which you can attack without crossing a river.

So you occupy that hex with the best units you've got and attack next turn in conjunction with other units, ENG and HQ to add support. Of course the Japanese BB's have to be present in large numbers to add shore bombardement and the hex should be ground striked first (but the results of ground strikes is usually very poor). Getting a +10 on the table is very hard indeed (unless the Japanese have an offensive available).

What one can do is attack the hex without HQ support hoping that one unit gets destroyed. Than you need two HQ's present to reorganise as much as you can and attack again the impulse after that.

Got all the way up to a +7 on the assault and rolled 10. Killed one territorial. Turn ended and Mountbatten came in as reinforcements into Calcutta. Now the defence is 8 factors plus HQ modification.

Only some good news is that CW defence of Egypt is crumbling. 6 scattered corp left, including one HQ, some disorganized and isolated. Should have the Euroaxis breaking through in one turn. Other good news is that the US screwed up their gearing limits and produced far too few pilots. Lots of empty carriers and excellent fighter planes pouring off the production lines, but no pilots to fly them. So Japan has a little more breathing room.
