While fooling around building scenarios in the Baltic I found myself realizing that fixed sonar arrays and towed array SURTASS-type ships must be common. I expect there must be very little in the public domain, but is there any open source information on this subject? And if no information is available, are there guidelines on how to deploy such sensors in a realistic or at least interesting manner?

My initial guess is that fixed sonar would be common in territorial waters and placed with special density around ports and shipping lanes such as the Kattegat. Older NATO members and Sweden would have denser placements and advanced systems developed locally, while newer NATO members might have patchy systems placed with NATO assistance or nothing at all, and Russian waters would be thick with installations that might be somewhat outdated. I don't know where Finland falls in all this.

I'd also love any information on Baltic SURTASS efforts or ASW in the AIP era more generally.

That's an interesting question. I haven't found an answer in my research but suspect that the shallow and noisy water would make those systems fairly ineffective. SURTASS relies heavily on convergence zones I think and you won't get much of one in the Baltic.

I seem to recall the Soviet Sub/crawler the Sweds were looking for in the 80s (1982?) was tapping the cable from a Swedish fixed array? Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly?
