Greetings,

Here is an AAR where i can post some of my adventures as the Allies against Joliverlay. Just wanted a place do show how i screw up and ask for more advices :)

We're playing the DBB C scenario with reduced stack and cargo limits. Usual bombing rules are in play.

This AAR doesn't start on the 7th of December but near end of January. My opponent is somewhat carefull, being new to the Japanese side. I have to admit this threw me a bit off guard in my tactic (at least the little tactic i had), having taken some decisions that in insight may not have been the best of all.

I will give a deeper description of the current state of the conflict, but as a short summary (current date is 24th of January 1942):

- The PH raid was pretty good on my side. No BS was sunk, but sustained for some heavy damages.
- I organized a massive retreat everywhere, expecting multiple assaults and trying to save most of my units. Which i surprisingly managed to do, given the hesitation of my opponent. As it stands, Singapore will only fall in a day or 2 (due to lack of defenders), Borneo is barely invaded, almost no base have fallen in the Solomons and i still hold most of China.
- An invasion of Burma is well underway however, and the Burma road has been cut out. I only have a barebone of an army in Burma, as almost all the units from Singapore have been redeployed in Palambang for a fortress (or kinda) scenario (44k men are here, all the Singapore indian corp + most Dutch units from Borneo and around) , and the rest moved to Calcutta.
- As a result of the Japanese slow expansion, i'm genuinely thrown off and don't know where to really focus. I know burma is invaded, but I have absolutly no idea where to defend. I have time to consolidate almost everywhere...but given i don't know what to prioritize, my units are basicaly sitting in Australia, waiting for something to happen and see where i can send them. It's quite the mental game. I have seen the KB (or more felt the effect, rip 1 CA)only once in 2 months near Rangoon, but that's it.

So yes, quite a phoney war so far.

You need to defend the supply route to eastern and western OZ. Defend the major ports in India and the 3xterrain in China. Do that and he will come to you as you try to build up your Allied pools of LCUs squads and air planes. For the Allies it is a trade of space for time, if he is going slowly he is assisting you and not forcing you to defend one area over another with your very dispersed and limited early war resources. Moving fighters and some US units into OZ would be desirable especially those units which will become part of the SW Pac Command.

Here is a little overview of the situation on different theatres:

Burma

https://i.imgur.com/MZiLjhl.png

As we can see, quite an aggressive push. My attempts to first slow down the invasion with bombers have failed as they've been shreded by the CAP from nearby bases (including near 2 squadrons of the Tigers).

Most of the big units have been pulled out, and Rangoon only has a handfull Indian defenders. I don't expect it to hold for a long time.

We can see up north a whole bunch of units moving to India; the whole 11th Chinese AG made its way here, followed by a few british ENG units. Exception made for the 54th Chinese corp, which is for now defending Toungoo as a slow down effort. The AVG unit is making its way up to be picked up by an Aphibious TF.

No sign of any fleet though, i think for now i don't have a risk of Naval invasion.

China

https://i.imgur.com/POR6GFb.png

Most operations for now are happening in the North, with a slow swoop of the northern bases by a few japanese units. Some are starting to make way up the roads to Sian, but for now the defenders are holding. I got a big garrison at Sian and near lvl4 fort.

https://i.imgur.com/Wk2Iqlw.png

Down south, i still hold the Wenchow pocket, and the Japanese are slowly swooping south/southwest toward Kweilin. Changsha has been occupied for weeks now without any big battle, except for one. Since then, only bombardments. Ichang has just been recaptured. Almost all big units have been pulled back behind the Changteh/Changsha/Hengyang line and took position at key points. But now that the Burma road is closed, only the Ledo/Chengtu line is alive. I also pulled out most of my bombers to Ledo/Calculta to save supplies, except for a few doing a Chungking/Sian supply bridge. Enemy bombers just act without any resistance in the area.

Borneo/DEI

https://i.imgur.com/V8fXXYW.png

Nothing much to report, the area has been calm for weeks. A few grabs here and there, but with virtualy nothing remaining in Singapore (which is expected to fall in a day or two), my efforts are focused on Palembang. The only issue is that i expected a quicker assault on he city, so my supplies are now running low. Overstacked and diminishing supplies, not very good. I'll attempt a few quick supply runs.

SOPAC

Appart from a few Shore bombing in PM, most of the Papua NG remains to be taken. The whole Solomons have fallen though.
Koumac has been invaded but given the patrols in the area, not much can reinforce it. Noumea is getting serious buffs, along with Suva and Pago Pago. Many US units are packing up in OZ, without much to do for now.

Given the enemy fleet has been seen lurking the area, i expect a push in this direction, or toward the Central Pacific islands which for most are still mine.

All the Dutch ARD have also been pulled out, and are soon reaching NZ.

I got a pretty hefty Searh net from PH down to Noumea, both on night and Day. Hopefully i can catch them a day or two in advance if they come.

Others

Huge transport fleets are doing the CT/Perth and CT/EC transit. Fuel convoys run from CT to Abaden, but i have a few runing from SF to Auckland.

A bunch of American units and planes are moving Offmap and should start reaching CT in 10 days.

That's pretty much it for the general situation.

A few reflexions:
- I should try and start tracking Japs best units, as i got no idea what is where. I don't even know which are the most dangerous.
- I think i should start running some US units from OZ up to India, that wouldn't be longer than off map move.
- I'll start dispatching more units in India, even breaking up some, to garrison more cities.
- CVs are chilling in PH for now, with the crews training on the ground. Won't sortie them before i have an idea of where the next move will be.

January 25th, 1942

As expected, Singapore has fallen. From all the destroyed units, i decide to recall only the 27th Australian, the others are not worth it for now give then shallow pool. With Palambang most probably the next target, i get as much supply as i can here via Oosthaven.

Breakout in Burma expected in a day or two with the probable fall of Pegu and Toungoo. Last retreating unit will leave Rangoon in two days after the current TF has finished unloading suplies. Japanese units are everywhere anyway so i can't retreat via the north anymore.
I'm very impressed that the troops near Moulmein have held an extra day, must be some lucky rolls there.

The First and Second lines in India are steadily building up forts, i'm only lacking the units to man them.

In India the goal for the Allies is to defend the major ports first, until more resources arrive over the next 6-12 months. Once you have secured the ports then you can defend Ledo to ensure a supply flow into China to help your defense there. You might also garrison the few Islands in the India Ocean like Diego Garcia, Male, Sale and Sacroto. This will help defend our off map supply route as u have air power and search platforms near the entry points so your arriving off map convoys don't get ambushed.

What should constitute good garrison units? Appart from the big brigades i don't have much to use to this matter. I have a few CLs patroling the islands but i agree that's not sufficent.

Take a look at your LCU arrivals queue. There will be regiments and battalions coming fairly frequently. Some of them need to build experience anyway, so they might as well garrison someplace for a while. If they get lost in a too-strong invasion they aren't much of a loss and can be bought back. The point is to stop the Japanese getting easy wins during the invasion bonus period (which ends April 1, 1942.

Calm day, nothing much to report. Burma slowly falls more and more in Japanese hands, while it appears clear my oponent is trying to completly go around Shangsha in China and invade via the softer underbelly which is Kweilin and Liuchow. I think i got pretty strong forces in the area, and Liuchow is the only real weakness, given it's a clear tile.

And against all odds, the troops north of Moulmein still hold up.

I do have 2 questions for all masterminds here:
- What should i do with all the short ranged AMc present in Java? Leave them as fodder?
- I constantly run out of mines, how do those supply really work? I can't mine anywhere in Java..

Evacuate the AMcs, no need to give the ships away. They can be useful later.

Mines have a production rate, you can look it up on the intelligence screen. Different ships use different mines, different nationalities have different mines.

Nice resistance from troops all around, got a few bloody noses. Bataan defense however is down to 0 fortification so the fall is nearing.
Fresh Chinese corps just arrive and will rest a bit before being dispatched at key crossing points along the rivers.

Speaking of China, i'm not really sure what to do with my big army up at Yenan. For now they're just holding here slowly starving out of supplies.

A few enemy TFs are detected in the Solomons, probably a small invasion force for PM or the souther islands, but i can't do much about it.

Protect Chungking, defend the roads in the 3X terrain as well as alongside the roads so the enemy does not go around you. Defend in depth as well. The Chinese will also be helped a lot in 2X terrain. Stay out of the clearings. Units in Yenan are not helping you with this. The units starving are only helping the enemy.

January 29th,1942

Battles still ongoing here and there. If we know we won't win, at least we take quite the toll among the enemy.

I'm gonna try and march the chinese red army south to threaten the japanese advance. Seems like he left not a lot of troops around Loyang.

Also lost an AO after stupidly forgeting to put it in repair once in port.It just flooded to death..

Things are heating up quite a lot. Using what i think is a full speed move, the invasion of Palembang is underway from Singapore in just one turn. Fortunatly, we managed to dent those transports quite a lot, as the TF is so far not escorted by any CVs or BB units. Our Torpedoe bombers have a fiest on those ships, and not a lot of units have set foot. GIven our still numerical superiority, i'll try to push them back with a shock attack (though i'm concerned about supplies), and have set up one of my Vilderbeest for a night naval attack, along with 3 set of bombers from Batavia (day for those).
I could have bombarded a bit harder on this invasion turn but some of my biggest units were still set on Rest.

An other smaller TF is also located near Noumea moving SouthEast. Given the recon, it's either going for Noumea or Tana. I'm a bit hesitant to intercept it as i don't know if this is an invasion force, or a surface force scanning around. GIven the type of units though, i'd go for transports, but i've already been burnt once and lost a STF to the enemy KB in the area pouncing on me undetected.

Let's also note the heavy defeat inflicted to Japanese troops in China near Nanyang. So far we're holding back for some days.

The AI normally attacks Noumea rather than Tanna - it's a script target. If you haven't already reinforced Noumea with at least a regiment of Aussie, NZ or US troops, Noumea will fall and you should not risk your ships without carrier cover of your own.

I'm playing against a player, not the AI :p
But yes Noumea has been reinforced with an US regiment.

Well as it happened , the fleet near Noumea was indeed a STF set to bombard. Good thing i pulled out my CTF, i don't think I'd have been able to counter it with just one CA against 4. I did have DDs though so i may would have been able to get some torps out.

My attempt at a counter attack at Palambang also failed, but i'm not too worried about it. I'm over limit in term of hex troops so...quite cynical, but lesser consumption.
Ennemy long range fighter cover is also in place, but without much efficiency for now.

I also have a report of the Mini KB surface force in the area.

The month ends with a bang. In addition to the contiuation of the Palambang invasion, the surface KB decides to give Bataan asounding visit. One day earlier and it would have wrecked havock in my AMs, which escaped the day before. Only minor ships have been sunk, and a few damages to the hex.

In Palambang, in exchange for a few cargos and one (or two) DDs, most of my TB british squadrons have been depleted. However only one pilot died, so that's good news. Time to pull them out with the other squadrons and attempt to extract them to India, they can't do much anymore.

In Burma Pegu is nearing its breaking point, while Toungoo holds well for now. No other major loss to report.

New month also means a big rotation of pilots to do. A huge number of ships also start retrofiting, except most of the Clemson DDs which will be made into DEs in April.

The next few days will also see the first American troops reaching Cape Town, destination India.

Small overview of the game after a while has passed.Quite a slow pace.

India and Burma

Slowly trickling down troops in India, reinforcing various coastal cities. The first American division is in transit from CT and should arrive on ground within the next two weeks. Calcultta is overflowing with troops, and i send as much ENG team as i can near the border to build up some bases. Quite a slow process though given the poor state of those ENG troops.

The first Chinese troop finaly reached Dimapur; i'm quickly railing it to Calcutta to start reinforcing. A good month will be necessary for the rest of the units to finish crossing.

Rangoon won't hold back for long. One or two extra assaults and it's done for, given the few troops remaining here. Most have been evacuated, or have retreated northbound. Port Blaire, Addu and Digeo G. have been reinforced with Indian brigades to at least offer some resistance.

China

Nothing has moved much in China, we're holding back pretty well, mostly due to the fact my opponent doesn't have a real thrusting axis. The road to Sian is still locked for now, and the Northern invasion isn't really a problem. In the south, troops are deployed in key positions to slow down progress. Our biggest issue are supplies, which become dangerously low everywhere, given that we still have a lost of ground to cover, and the lack of air coverage. I can't bomb anything , given my bombers are too short ranged, and anything get shreded by Japanese air. But as the results below show, we're not doing too bad. Also, most of the Red army which was stuck in Yenan is now marching to Sian, with the hope to reach Inner china for defense before the road gets cut off.

Sumatra,Borneo and Java

Palembang is still under invasion, for now no real progress. Oosthaven has been invaded this day and the troops easily pushed back. I wanted to evacuate my 2 british Hqs but i got here one day too late, and they just got shreded (not good to fight in strat mode). The big part of the KB or at least mini KB is here.

Java is almost an open terrain, with only the Dutch troops here reinforcing key areas and a few dutch planes with no match for the Jap navy. Borneo hasn't seen any action in weeks.

Solomons

Bases are turned Red one by one slowly. My sub screen is absolutly useless to catch transports, even with air search coverage.

Australia and Pacific islands

Moving troop around, feeding from CT and a bit from the US. Nothing really happening down here for now. I'm reinforcing Noumea as much as i can, since i got time. Given that i know part of the KB is up in Java, i may dare a few bombardment raids on the Solomons .

I'm sending AOs to Penrhyn as a fueling stop instead of Christmas, as the trip is a bit short for some transports. Va'vu is nicely building up, and i'm strugling to find more ENG to send to other islands.

US and Aleutians

Adak is nicely building up, defended by the Canadian Brigade and host to a sub base for long range missions to Japan.
Nothing special in the US, gathering as much troops as i can buy out and waiting for some DD retrofits to be done before sending transports away. I'm however getting low on Catalinas which seem to crash quite often, depleting my search patterns. CVs are still in PH for now, from which i run my convoys to AUZ.

For now still calm. I don't intend on doing much in Feb, as i wait for most retrofits to be done. I'll see to start planning something for March. I think i'm a bit behind on pilot training as well. I have a hard time focusing on something to do and just end up doing nothing but the waiting game, given i'm sure where the real push is.

You might set your PBYs to a range of 12 except in rare cases where you really need the extra range. You should also set them to 40 or 50% patrol if you aren't already. That should cut down on ops losses.

His forces in Burma aren't that great. However, it's still a good idea to bring your forces back to India so they don't get cut off. I'd say Chittagong, Diamond Harbor and Calcutta, Viz... and Madras are good to garrison for now.

Good luck.

Cheers,
CB
