Hello, I am new to the game, but I noticed something strange in my games, that I thought might be a bug.

The sk 18 field gun consistently moved much closer up to the enemy during battles than the field howitzers in the same artillery units. I am not sure this is intended behaviour, given that the sK18 had a very long range and was not an infantry gun. Yes, it might have been used as an AT gun in desperate situations, but that was hardly the norm.

It's not just the AP schells, the HE hits also happen at very close range. This probably explains the massive loss rate of the gun. I've lost 250 by late 42 and these are not due to retreats.

Do you have a save where we can launch an attack and see the weapon in close combat? It would help to see what's going on. Thanks.

In the save you see various Soviet attacks:

250.151 range 370, AT range 340
205.116 range 392, AT range 661
203.104 no HE, AT range 870
258.166 range 620, no AT
253.156 range 1172, no AT
241.135 range 1125, no AT
239.133 range 1875, no AT

Different weapons but same behaviour

122mm K390(r) Field Gun
262.175 range 400, AT range 1125

105mm Mle 1936 Field Gun (Rumanian)
262.173 range 456, no AT
260.182 range 870, no AT

Seems to be a general affliction of the Field Gun classes.

Thanks for the save. Gary found a few discrepancies with one of the tables that determines which units are less likely to be involved in close in combat and is working on improving this now.

Thank you for your quick response Joel, and thank you MechFO for providing the saves!
It's great to see that issues are being addressed so quickly in detail, now I know why it's such a fantastic game.

Just on a side note, the Soviet artillery divisions seem to be very apt repulsing attacks from my infantry divisions...but they only have artillery guns in their OOB.

Soviet artillery doctrine was a bit different than their German and Western counterparts. Soviet artillery was trained and used regularly in the direct fire plan over open sights.
