Just spotted this on HBO. Anyone else watched it yet?

  • HBO Valley of Tears series

The first two episodes out here in the Nordics, looks like that's my weekend settled!

I've heard of it. Looks interesting.

I've got a friend over in Haifa who was a medic during the Yom Kippur War.

I'll have to check it out!

Just watched the first episode, setting the scene, introducing the protagonists, all very well made. Then, boom(!), it is Saturday, October 6th. Man, it got intense towards the end!

Episode 2 tomorrow. I won't quite yet start to make Generation Kill comparisons, but, my attention, they certainly got it

I just watched episode 2/(8) and can't help but throw a little spoiler here: there seems to be some Syrians on their way through the Valley of Tears!

Oh but this is good, attention to detail is excellent. Like with war movies /series, the gear is a star on its own. Man those Sho't Kals are gorgeous here...

Are the production values on a part with Band of Brothers, and The Pacific? If it's a quality production, I might consider adding it to my small war video collection.

Long answer: Here's the trailer, see yourself:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltSvPE8xw3A

    Short answer: absolutely!

I made the comparison to Generation Kill, another HBO master series. Based on two episodes I've seen, this is right there with it.

...although it is far better than what the trailer implies. Two episodes down, six to go.

Crossroads and 76mm thanks for the tip!

I'll look into it. If I can't get it or the price is too high guess I'll just wait for the DVD.

    Thanks again!
    Regards,
    John

If you don't have one yet, go for a Chromecast device while you're at it. You can then have the stream at your main screen by just a click of a mouse.

I am into having watched six of the is it ten episodes now. While the first two episodes certainly got your attention, things have calmed a bit into spending more time with individuals and small team dynamics. It is all very impressive still, as you learn more about the various protagonists, their backgrounds etc. It is Sunday Oct 7th now, and things certainly look grim yet.

Among other observations, HBO Nordic has somehow screwed the Original Audio (Hebrew) play list, with episodes 1, 2, 5, and 6 there. So after having waited for a few days that to change, I jumped and watched episodes 3 and 4 with the dubbed English audio. Oh, but that was awful! Stay clear if you can

Really waiting to see the last four (?) episodes.

PS Some one give this crew a new Sho't Kal, and quick!

I don't have HBO so haven't watched this yet, but I've been surprised with other series how bad dubbing can ruin the whole shebang. So now I try to use subtitles only with foreign-language stuff.

Amen to that. At least there’s the choice with HBO Nordic, hope with you lot as well!

Just watched episodes #7 and #8 today. Oh, but they are good, they've quite slowed the things down, we are learning more about the characters, and what a bunch they are.

Does this series cover the entire war, or just the fighting on the Syrian front?

It covers the fighting at Golan Heights, mainly by one tank crew, and two protagonists at Mt Hermon. Some cut backs to civilian life back at Jerusalem, their families and friends, mostly.

At episode #7, day 3 of the war. Slow going, very well made drama. A gung-ho war series this is not. Not that you asked, but worth a mention.

Come to think, similar to Generation Kill in this aspect. War is not a centerpiece, rather the men (and women, in this case) at war, instead.

Episodes #9 and #10, a proper catharsis, at least for some of them, as was expected.

Not to spoil anything, but it all looks like there will be season 2, too. Cliff-hangers, definitely.

Valley Of Tears has created quite a stir in Israel and made it into the NY Times:

An IDF a band of Brothers. There were aspects I was disappointed in. For instance I wish they covered the night fighting along the Tapline Road. I found the character who played BG Yitzhak Hofi to be less than convincing and they never covered the battle for Northern Command headquarters at Nafah, which was incredible with Syrian T-62s hit with Bazookas at point blank range. That said, I binge watched it and enjoyed it. Just thought the Israeli politics came into it more than the real fighting.

Well said, this was more BoB than Generation Kill in that it took its time to introduce us to main characters, especially in the mid part when it slowed down. After that, the fight scenes had even more impact. The lull before the fight.

Lots of action not depicted indeed, but what it missed in the mid-part it made up in the end.

Let us see indeed if there's Season 2. Lots of stories left untold.

I gave up on this at the start of episode 9. IMO, the story line had gone so far off the rails of believability that I just turned it off. I was really disappointed because the battle scenes were well done and the story held a lot of promise. Parts of the story were (for me) just ludicrous...
