What happens to the damaged planes when executing an immediate air transfer?

They return to the pool through transit (so not readily visible and still requires repair).

What�s the difference of making an immediate transfer, from waiting and hoping the AI will evacuate air fields in the route of advancing enemy units?

Executing an immediate transfer moves the Air Group right now. AI might evacuate and if it doesn't then all damaged air craft are lost as well as some support units or AA elements that exist in the hex. Using immediate transfer allows you to move bombers up closer to the front for ground attack mission flown during your air phase which in turn can save on total air miles flown reducing operational losses.

...but only if the destination airfield has good supply, correct?

Is there a way to immediately resupply the new airfield before you execute your Air phase?
