According to the manual (4.5.1) fighters with no assigned mission will attempt to intercept enemy planes near to their airbase.

This seems to imply that if all of your fighters have been assigned to air directives then there will be no auto intercepts.

So if managing the air war manually it would be wise to ensure that some of your fighters are not included in air directives ? Is this really the case ?

In my understanding, and I have seen nothing to contradict this, only Air GROUPS directly attached to AD do not do auto-intercept. Not AOGs. So if you assign an AOG to an AD, this AD will call only on the planes in that AOG, BUT the AOG planes can contribute to auto-intercept.

This is quite useful, so you can now have it any way you want. If you want a specific fighter group to NOT do any auto-intercept, then assign it to a specific AD. If not, keep it in AOG, it will do auto-intercept as well as its AD missions.

The new air management takes a little while to grasp, but it's very nice and flexible. And you can always click "Air Assist" !

there are a few quirks so the core rules are:

a) if the fighters have no AD OR are picked up in an AD via auto-assign, then they are available for auto-interceptions

this will cover missions during the air resolution phase and their response to air transport missions (in the ground phase)

b) in a GS battle, fighters will be drawn in are different (18.1.3):

quote:

Fighters in the GS AD, and with GS turned on for the attacking side – maximum possible response;
Fighters in the GS AD, but with GS turned off for the attacking side – medium response
Fighters not assigned to this GS and with GS either on or off – low to medium response.

so basically around GS its feasible that any fighter group may be called into action
