The trained pilot management seems to be kind of difficult in the game, I'm hoping there would be small improvements made to it.

Problems:

(1) "Free" trained pilot pool composition is completely unknown to you if you don't pay attention to disbands. With some calculations, you can find out how many Ftr/TacB/LB etc. pilots there are, but skill levels are completely in the dark. There should be a method to review your free pilots and possibly dismiss the ones with low experience. Or the system could just automatically dismiss any disbanded airgroup pilots that have lower than national morale XP. You can potentially control the "Free" pool with taking care which groups you disband, but automatic disbands will mix it eventually. "Trained pilots" becomes a lottery.

(2) I'd consider this to be kind of a bug: If an airgroup has more ready pilots than it needs (really common with Soviet airgroup changes), and you send the group to reserve, the extra pilots will disappear. When you bring the airgroup back, it will have only the normal amount of max pilots. Sending to reserve should either move the excess median xp pilots to the "Free" pool, thus approximately preserving the airgroup average xp, or create an equal amount of randomized pilots to the pool in the same manner when an airgroup is disbanded from the reserve.

A player not paying close attention can potentially ruin a good chunk of their airforce (like I did) by disbanding low xp groups, setting high XP groups to "Trained Pilots" and watching their ace groups get filled with low xp pilots without really knowing what's actually happening.

Agreed.

Pilot management is frustrating. You should be able to easily build "Ace groups" (equipped with the best aircrafts). Currently, you have some high exp pilots in crap groups, and some suckers in ace groups.

Now, not everyone would be interested in this, but I think it's in the spirit of WitE 2 to allow in depth control while not demanding it from the player.

You can find the avalable trained pilot numbers in any squadron pilots tab. It's the Trained Pilot Crews number. Though as I understand it that's the total pool, so f.e. some pilots which have been already given specialisation will be counted there as well as fresh pilots.
