Now that I have back my Windows PC (actually a MacBook Pro with a Win10 partition) I could put my nose into some games I had bought only not to be able to play them.

Mostly Armored Brigade (which I have with all the DLCs). I created some fast scenarios only to learn the command system and the UI - which is not as simple as it looks (and a bit rough around the edges - Operation Flashpoint, Command Ops 2 and the obvious inspiration for AB, Combat Mission, are all more polished in the UI compartment).

I then played my first "proper" scenario, "Walk on Water" (I guess it is the first one anybody tries...) I got a tactical defeat: the Finns were really good at wearing down and destroying piecemeal my superior Soviet force. I plan to play it again and see if I learned anything from the fiasco...

I've been playing Advanced Tactics Gold. AI here stands for Artificial Insanity and I have to question accuracy of some of the scenarios game comes with: is Panzer Division REALLY just 1 tank company and some infantry with trucks? I thought that is French infantry division

Sounds like historically accurate Winter War. What game did you play that on?

ATG claims nowhere to have an accurate depiction of units. Some of the scenarios may. I think you may be putting too much thought into it.

Finished up a CMBS scenario playing the Ukraine side, it was the first time I got to employ a Tunguska in a CM battle. What a beast! It chewed up three BTR-82a without any return fire.

I have an on-going small campaign in CC:PITF. It's morning of the last day s still some battles yet to come. I'll probably take on a CC:GTC campaign next.

I recently purchased FOG2 Medieval only loaded it to make sure it was installed correctly and also downloaded the WWII mod for Armored Brigade and the Normandy mod for CC:TBF haven't tried it out yet. I'm also getting the CMO itch again. So plenty of options for the next round of games.

I always have PBEM games on the go with all of the Combat Mission games. I also have PBEM games with Flashpoint and the John Tiller Campaign series.

I also take Field of Glory 2 for a spin along with Steel Division, and Lock n Load Tactical Digital using Single Player. Lots of fun!!

After selling off my entire ASL collection for over $2K I have reinvested some of it in to a boardgame called 'Panzer' by GMT. Loving it.

That's rather interesting, playing a political ideology type game! I did like the beer & pretzel game Kremlin, was very fun with a lot of players.

It is a fascinating genre of games when done well. I just love "Churchill", a game about the "Three Powers" and their attempts to re-shape the World (or keep it as it was) at the end of WWII. It is very well done, but what makes it are the victory conditions. If you come ahead in your interests when the war ends you win... But if you come ahead by too much then the game assumes that the two other Powers will form a coalition against you, with the one with most point being the Leader - and thus the winner.

And of course you still have to win the war, both against the Axis and Japan...

For the last few months I've been playing Strategic Command World at War.

Fun game, though I am total rubbish at it, but enjoyment is the key - and I've enjoyed it thoroughly. I feel I am coming to the end of its natural cycle and will look to move on - perhaps to War Plan - in due course.

I thought War Plan and Strategic Command World at War was basically the same engine? Of course you may know this, and if you do, then I suppose you won't feel cheated once you discover all the similarities...

Been doing a multiplayer Warplan with a buddy of mine at about four turns a week. For solo, I just started wading into WITE2, although I've been doing Shadow Empire for some time. That really is a classic title. I dabbled a bit into ATG before that. Vic does excellent work.

Cheers,
CB

No, I don't know anything about the engines. I did post here a while back, inviting opinions on both games, ahead of deciding which to play first. No one mentioned this - but then there weren't that many replies anyway .

To answer the OP.

I've been fussing with Squad Leader, Panzer leader, Afrika Korps, Russian Campaign, Fortress Europa, A3R, Russian Front and Tobruk recently.

As well as fussing with Tigers on the Hunt, LnL Tactical Digital, Squad Battles, Command Ops 2 as well as a few other fringe interests.

So not much much :)

The big plan is to find enough energy to make a dedicated platform able to accommodate The Longest Day board game. As well as check into making Squad Leader into a 72nd scale experience.

I've been finding it easier lately to get into board game wargaming for some reason. Maybe it's covid crushing my interest in going outside. I'm not afraid, there's just so little point in going out when nothing is open eh. I'm starting to become a semi hermit. Other than riding mmy bike, I'm mostly inside. That, and it's easier to find good board wargaming groups on FB than it is good computer wargaming groups on FB. No idea why that is.

I own all the decent computer wargames of the last 30 years. I might not have every iteration, but eventually you realize, there is only so many ways to simulate something.
100 bucks for War in the East2 and it is not sufficiently different from War in the East 1, which is not much different than Russo German War, which isn't too different than Warplan, which can be gamed with TOAW4, or Decisive Campaigns, or Panzer Campaigns or Unity of Command, or Panzer Corps, ..... I hope the point was made.

And in the end, it's more fun to play Russian Campaign in most cases. And the graphical differences are not enough. Being on a computer is indeed convenient, but it sometimes lacks a specific quality. War in the East for all it's detail, doesn't auto win against a good board game.

And I recently found a genuine human opponent in town. Honest to god FTF old school wargamer. I just need to be patient and wait out covid's impact on social spaces.

Still beating myself senseless with Empires in Arms code work to get an update wrapped up. Hopefully in May. I'd like to take a break and get back into other games.

My GoTo break when I need one is still Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (yes, still) where I can knock out a random quick battle in about half an hour. There's something about shooting tanks that relaxes me...

Me? I'm playing a Vassal Module "The Battle for Normandy" your typical Monster game of the Normandy invasion in 1944.
Scale is battalion/company, 1 hex equals 1270 yards (1.16 Kilometer). Might take awhile to play, I'm in the June 6/7 night phase. There are a couple of solo play tables that help plot game moves.

That is a beautiful game.

YEs, CMBO, CMBB or CMAK for my quick need to blow stuff up after a frustrating day. But I am also doing this a bit with Armored Brigade now there is a WW2 mod called AB1943

I've read The Barbary Pirates in Mediterian (Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry and until 18th century) recently but didn't know still Barbary pirates in 19th. Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail - Barbary War looks interesting. These have campaign or only battle scenario?

Yes in previous centuries piracy was funded by Sublime Porte (Bâb-ı Âli). Since it is naval war game I've wondered that scenario -or campaign- really about naval or land war at that time. Since historically in Mediterrian it was difficult to find skilled sailors and ships at that time. It was all about mercenaries.
