American Navy quietly keeps stretching across the world globe. Two convoys stretch out from East Coast to Greenland; additional cruisers depart for the Philippines. The intent is to be able to use Singapore massive (8 saved oil) stockpile, should supply lines across Pacific be cut.

Commonwealth faces its first supply crisis of the campaign, as Italian submarines deliver their blow earlier. This will take some rearrangement to repair.

Commonwealth bombers depart on a suicide mission, attempting to disable German ARM-HQ likely to trigger an offensive chit next impulse.

In retrospect: a futile attempt, as due to an intercept there was no chance of success (10 STR factors needed for even a 1 in 10). Fortunately, no lives are lost.

Second Soviet bombing run of Helsinki is equally unsuccessful.

In China, Communist forces fall back subtly, trying to protect the wounded HQ.

No action in Baltic Sea - with nearly 1:1 odds, neither Soviet BB Marat (with a loaded INF division, too), nor weak Finnish BB want any action.

North Sea sees a successful shell by Dutch De Ruyter sending an older German BB to the damaged pool, while Luftwaffe damages a Commonwealth TRS with a loaded MOT unit.

Now, in the South things are quite different, and Allies take first real naval losses.

Despite poorer odds, Commonwealth decides to stick in out in both cases.

Despite heavy Axis investment into increasing naval attack column, CW rolls 5 perfect rolls in a row - all 9's and 10's, and only ends up with a few paint scratches. Italians lose a CL.

USSR claims Bessarabia, Germany denies the claim; a new war follows.

Yes, this is going to stretch Soviet forces too far too wide, but it's also a chance to bomb Ploesti fields into oblivion - depriving Axis of oil it will desperately need.

All available CW and French ships sail out. Second Soviet BB in the Baltic sea does too. It's going to be a hot July.

All 6 Commonwealth carrier planes descend on Kriegsmarine. 1 bomber is aborted, another one is shot down - but a German CL goes down, and an older BB is damaged. And that's considering neither side has surprise points, and CW only had 5 x class 1 and 1 x class 2 planes. Ouch. Germans retreat.

Meanwhile, in Western Mediterranean it's a battle with no survivors left standing.

The dice favor Allies for the third time in a row: some paint chips and a single downed French CL in exchange for 3 Italian cruisers and both newest 8-2 battleships out of commission, one of them sunk. Italians retreat.

Despite support from French fleet, Marseilles falls. Allied front in the Alps is starting to collapse.

As if in a way to balance out earlier losses by Regia Marina, both French BBs currently at anchor are destroyed.

All-pass turn-end attempt by the Allies. And nope! Roll of 6 on a 5 or less needed.

Jul/Aug 1940, End of Turn:

Production:

Germany builds 3 submarines (2 - in 2nd phase), a LND2 and pilot combo, a FTR2 and a pilot combo, a field artillery, and a militia.

Italy builds two new submarines (as the ones in construction pool are better than those in repair pool) and a territorial. Italy has quietly picked up French Somaliland, British Somaliland, and Tunis locations over the past couple of turns.

Japan starts 2nd phase of BB Yamato and CV Zuikaku, 2 carrier planes, and an infantry.

China retains the focus on Communist units; a field artillery is built, as well as NAT-CHI garrison and a cavalry divison.

Commonwealth builds 3 territorials, 2 pilots, a LND2, 4 convoys (uh oh - I forgot to readjust CW convoys to rebuild the gap in St. Vincent!), and a carrier plane.

France builds 2 garrisons and an INF-HQ.

USA builds 2 convoys, repairs French CV Bearn, an infantry, 2 carrier planes, as well as starting work on 2 cruisers.

USSR builds a FTR2 / pilot combo, a LND2 / pilot combo, and 2 infantry corps.

It's shaping up to be another busy turn. Although I can't help but wonder if I'm falling way far behind with Axis advances.

Skies over Belgium light up. Commonwealth bombers aren't as much trying to incur damage, as they are forcing German fighters to break off of an inevitable Impulse 2 ground strike attack - the one that French fighters are hoping to intercept.

One CW bomber is aborted, and a CW FTR2 goes down, including the pilot. The rest of the force turns back, but at least 2 German fighters are now out of the picture.

All available French reserves shift South. The frontline is still as perfect as it can be - ATs, AA, best units available - but everyone else is moved down.

Despite clear weather, Axis forces mainly hold ground, except for a single sortie in Northern China. Alas, even that one goes quite badly.

Soviet strategic bombers are merciless; not only 3 oil points are lost the impulse before, now there's a lost BP as well. By now all 4 LND4's are on the Rumanian front.

Germans use an Offensive chit and a land action, and a massive, absolutely massive air battle ensues in Western Belgium.

Two German bombers and two fighters have to abort.
French lose all four fighters - and a pilot.

French AA sends one more German bomber home. But five more break through.

And the battles are ready; Germans in Belgium, trying to break through the thick blue line, and Italians in the Alps, forcing their way through after all the possible ground strikes have failed.
