Are ships going to be designed and work exactly as land or air vehicles or can we expect something closer to real naval ships, something that takes a lot of time and resources to build, have maybe multiple parts like turrets, torps, rangefinders, superstructure, hull, machinery etc. What do you think?

Yes. :)

The question is: When.

I don't mind taking it much more time than end of 2021, it will be very good for sure. It is Vic, after all.

I am still tweaking my game around the 'new' alien factions, battle groups, etc, and haven't explored every depth of airforce yet. The two new planet types are still in assessment on my side.

The good thing is, we have all the information in the reports. The bad thing is, we have all the information. Maerchen, 2020

Came for SE. Will stay for SE.

Vic said in an interview at the end of last year that he was considering dividing bodies of water into larger sea zones rather than hexes, with naval units basing out of ports and launching missions into those seazones rather than having to be moved on a hex-by-hex basis. Right now, in order construct new zones/assets, you have to have a road connection, but that obviously has to change to facilitate sea logistics and Vic has mentioned that air logistics may gain the same functionality as well. Not sure we know anything more about the naval update, but I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I kinda like hex naval battles, like Strategic mind: the pacific but that seazone idea is intriguing

I am looking forward to it adding to the game in various ways, including introducing another way of fielding, moving and attacking. In a similar way to the way air force did. A good mix of new and old.
It will be interesting to see how navy interacts differently with air and land and other navy.

*edit* considering how important navy has traditionally been in logistics, i am looking forward to how that may be modelled in-game also.

I agree with all the above. Adding naval units both combat and commercial/logistics would be great though I would hope some water resources would also be available. Perhaps offshore oil rigs, wind power stations, fishing and even hard to exploit but rich underwater mineral deposits

As fun as hex-based naval games can be, I've found it doesn't jive well with strategic level games with long-scale turns such as SE's seasonal turns. Exerting naval power into a sea zone seems a better fit for SE's scale.

Agree. Works well in War in the Pacific.

It's a long time ago but IMO it was like setting orders on an area and then the task forces acted on their own.
