I promised Dave a WiTE2 campaign game over 3 years ago, and I always keep my promises.

Nothing to see here for a while, he has to have time to learn the game like everyone else. I just wanted to save a spot.

Well....you are certainly a man of your word M60!

Looking forward to this even though I will probably get stomped. Give me a few weeks to get up to speed and read some of the early AAR's to learn what to do/not to do. At that point I'll be ready to march deep into the Bolshevik Motherland

Week 1- 22 June 1941

Germany's repudiation of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non Aggression Pact has shocked the world. Luftwaffe bombing raids on Soviet airfields in this opening week of war destroyed nearly 2,000 fighters and 200 tactical and level bombers. Many of the raids originated at an altitude of 9,000 feet with fighter coverage a few thousand feet above that. Despite the severe fighter losses, Soviet bombers took to the sky as Axis ground forces crossed into Soviet territory. The ensuing actions resulted in the loss of another 250 Soviet fighters and over 1,200 tactical and level bombers. Total reported losses were 3,654 Soviet vs 162 Axis aircraft.

The severe losses taken by our air forces requires an immediate reorganization. Over 50 fighter regiments with their valuable pilots are relocated to the Caucasus. Here they will remain out of service for many weeks as there are simply an insufficient number of replacement aircraft available. Those formations of sufficient size and identified as flying obsolete aircraft will be reequipped along with up to date air regiments in active service. In this way the Soviet Reserves will not be full of both functional and broken air regiments.

Reorganizing the various air commands is a long process and by no means complete by the end of the first week.

The priority is getting similar type aircraft into the regiments. Southwestern Air Command here has reorganized with a combination of differing group types. Most came from within the command itself, but a few unit swaps with other commands was unavoidable. More depleted regiments will be joining the Caucasus grouping in the immediate future.

Long Range Air Command gets their own reorganization. The four corps, or BAKs as they are otherwise known, are superfluous to me. The air units are all transferred from them and answer directly to the LRAC, formed up now with 5 air divisions. As escorts are needed, they will be drawn from the appropriate local air commands.

I wonder if people understand why you send your air force to the Caucasus instead of the reserve ;-)

I'm guessing but I suspect it's a mix of them being quicker to bring back to the front lines if wanted and no forced refit?

Forced refit can be avoided by setting the replacements to restricted. The screenie doesn't show it, but that is the status that I set them to. There are plenty of airfields that aren't needed right now in the Caucasus, so it was a logical place. Once regiments drop to size 20 on turn 12, some of these regiments may be brought back into service.

Now that the air units are reorganized to some degree, it's now time to work up the air phase target selection.

I opt to strike at the river crossings over the Daugava where the panzers are across. This is designed to impede follow-on forces behind the panzer spearhead. Northwest Air Command has six hexes targeted for interdiction. An additional recon mission is added to try and spot any additional trailing forces.

The attacks are complete and we have some interdiction down. This will impede enemy movement through these hexes slightly. Over tine, it all adds up.

Here is the first view of the north. A long string of infantry moving along behind the panzers. Solid pocket by Dave here, and I have no way out of the pockets he created. Also combat delay is enabled, but none shows. Dave did a good job here and kept everything moving without any hindrance.

In the center, another very solid pocket. I bounce 10th Army HQ out of the pocket along with all the SUs it can carry, but Golubev is killed in the attempt and replaced by Filipp Golikov. Since the HQ is now out of the pocket, I transfer it to the Kharkov MD, so a lot of units inside the pocket still under 10th Army do the same. This will free up some command points for Western Front. In the center, there were a couple combat delays created, but nothing really significant.

In the south, all pockets one again are closed tight. Not one hole to be found. Dave also elected to restrict movement so as not to trigger the release of the Southern Front. This means what is pocketed is not so much as what is caught up north and center. Like the center, only a couple combat delays are seen.

Thank you.

So your thoughts on this is to prevent taking of the ports along the coast quickly. Or just to get over the river?

Increase the MP cost for follow on units to cross the river.

Ok, Thanks. You did mention that earlier & I understand that will impede the coming infantry. Would it be worth it to even consider delaying the armor going for the ports per se? Or just not worth the bombers to do so?

I don't think it is worth it. Also while on the subject, I'm not terribly fond of how fast ports repair themselves. Railyards are one thing, but ports are a different beast and require more specialist skills.

The northern defense such as it is, starts forming at Pskov.

In the center, Tolbukhin takes 20th Army from Remezov. The AI wastes no time killing off Pavlov commanding Western Front and replaces him with Sokolovsky. Not a bad choice actually, so he will do for now.

At railyards within a reasonable distance from Smolensk, units with decent stats have been delivered from various locations and unloaded. They are then set to refit. They will be at full strength on the next turn and can reinforce 20th Army. I also have Purkaev commanding 28th Army. Next week, both 20th and 28th Armies will be folded into the new Western Front that also will become an assault front.

A general pullback takes place in the south.

I don't think SmokingDave will hit this entrained unit, but if he does will only have 10% of Combat value if they are attacked. Interesting

It's a calculated risk. Naturally he has no idea what may be on a train.

Of course! I love it.

Would be funny if Smokingdave did go this way around your defense, marked in yellow, like Seminole did in his scenerio against another opponent. But you are probably a couple turns ahead anyway and already know the answer ;-)

Keep up the excellent work on this fine AAR!

I found that even while loaded on trains my Soviet divisions filled up while on the train at a depot to the mid to high 90% range. Is this a bug or curious why unload?
