Hello,

I guess I found a bug with the Japanese light carrier Ryujo: In the 1941 campaign she is handled as a fleet carrier so that Japan has 7 fleet carriers instead of 6. The Ryujo has in fact the stats of a fleet carrier in the game.

Another observation: I destroyed an American naval group in the port of Manila. I think it was the CA Houston. But I can not found this ship in the "sunk ships" list of the report tab. Only the BB's from Pearl Harbor can be found in the list.

Oh, there is a third observation: During the attack on PH one of the Japanese carriers air wing took damage from enemy AA guns (carrier planes lost 1 strength point). But the blue shield over the naval fleet was indicating the value "0" while the battle took place.

For what concerns Ryujo I think it's a design choice in the end, since the CV in Warplan can either be Fleet Carrier or Escort Carrier.

On the other hand it may be a Fleet Carrier '39 or '40 as tecnology - for instance. (Not sure if Ships are upgradeable but I hope not so to give an edge to newly produced ones)

Ryūjō = 48 aircraft = fleet carrier.

Only capital ships appear in the 'ships lost' listing.

Ryūjō = 48 aircraft = fleet carrier.

Just curious, what is the cutoff point between a CVL and a CV? Is it based on the maximum aircraft the carrier could carry or how much the aircraft historically carried or could operate? The Ryujo for example has different numbers for all three situations. 48 was the maximum, 37 the most it could operate, and 34-35 is what it usually carried.

I think it's just the naming, CV, CVL and CVE.
Ultimately the game has 2 type of Aircraft Carrier Units. The 'big' and the 'small' ones.
Each category has then its own upgrade level (Albeit there point difference is rather abysmal).

I do not remember if ships can get upgraded or not though (I hope not at least there is some difference between CV'39 and CV'42 etc).

So ideally a CV with 80+ planes can be a CV'42, but a CV with 40-50 planes can be a CV'39, and so on!

That could be, but, if a manage to keep the Ryujo alive long enough to upgrade it to CV'42 does that mean it now carries 80+ planes?

It is not just the naming. The game has different stats for light/escort carriers and for the bigger fleet carriers. In the game the Ryujo is handled as a fleet carrier although the historical ship had only 48 Planes. The historical fleet carrier had about 80 Planes. This is reflected by the game but not in the case of the Ryujo. That was the reason for my post.

btw there is no different upgrade path. All carriers use the same advancement "carrier operations". A light carrier 1942 or 1943 would not become a fleet carrier. It would just be an advanced type compared to another light carrier with the standards from 1940.

Whether a carrier was listed as a CVL or CV was very subjective and changed from navy to navy. For the Japanese carriers that started as CVLs would become CV (Fleet) carriers at the end of the war.

The main difference that decided whether a carrier was considered a CVL or a Fleet carrier was not in how many aircraft they carried, but in their speed. The speed to keep up with the deciding factor.

Yes, the Ryūjō # of planes seem low, but not really. American Carriers at the time only effectively carried about 60-70 planes and the British Illustrious class carried 36-57
