What is the functional difference between a coastal hex and a beach hex as both are highlighted by Z for invasion purposes?

Not all coastal hexes get highlighted with the Z key.

Right, but I'm talking about the ones that are highlighted along with beach hexes...

Beach is water and can only be occupied with an invasion or disembark. Units on a beach are destroyed by air on a 1 for 1 basis. Literally an open beach were you are exposed.

Coasts are land/water hexes. And a unit can occupy it preventing invasion

OK, beach hexes.

But why does Z highlight coastal hexes as well; can't they also be invaded?

OK, this is good info.

But, now back to my original question as beaches and coastal appear to be nearly identical.

What is the functional difference between a coastal hex and a beach hex?

Referring to what Alvaro said above, a beach hex cannot be blocked from invasion. A coastal hex could be occupied by the enemy, and thus not be directly invaded by amphibious assault.
