I think there was the way of giving AI order to move to a location to do that pesky strategic movement.
E.g. I need to move X units to point A (moving on foot). Instead of clicking for several turns AI was given control over the formation and given objective to reach. And things were taken care of it.
Or am I mixing games here?

I guess it is a tie knotting thing. As long as you do it without thinking than you know how it's done but once you start thinking about it **** gets impossible to do.

Yes, there is a way, and I know that there is a tutorial about that very thing. If I recall, Larry did an extensive write up about this, and that is what I call the tutorial about it. I will try to find the link, maybe Larry can chime in and give me hint about where that is. Seems like it was in one of his AARs. It may be in the thread

I'm not sure if that is the thread you want, but it was a document or AAR thread like that that Larry did and it explained exactly how to do what you want to do.

Dang it now I must find that, I need to look at that again, because I want to learn that, too.

To elaborate, I find this a very useful tool. In the Road to Moscow I scenario if I want to send Guderian's Panzer Army to the Berezina River crossings, I would control just those units while letting Elmer control the rest of the Army Group Center. Sometimes I make it and sometimes I don't.

In summary,
1. [\]=all units now have a pink bar
2.Open each of the Formations [F] in the Second Panzer Army and change the General Order to Manual. NOTE Only Right-click cycles to MANUAL. Left-click cycles through all other modes.
3.You can modify the OBJECTIVES tracks [/]. Drag and drop objectives of Elmer�s units or leave them as designed. Elmer will continue to carry out these orders to the best of his ability for the rest of the game.
These, of course, can be modified during the course of the game. Pink-bar [\] then [/] to show objective tracks, and drag and drop objectives.
4.[\]will remove the pink bar from all units
5.[|] Elmer will move his units
6.You can now move your Second Panzer Units and Plan Attacks
7 Execute all Attacks [E][1].

I think there may be something in his cigar that causes the behavior he exhibits. Although he's worth his weight in gold when it comes to the workings of TOAW.
