I am not sure whether the Uhu was able to see through smoke, AFAIK smoke could also block the active IR. But it was designed to be used at night and I've read in a book about the battle of the Bulge that favourite German tactics was to fire flares against the Allied tanks, thus blinding them, and then kill them with the Uhus and ordinary Panthers.
