Trying to invade the Solomons and get Guadalcanal it seems to me that the 3 Japanese CV parked north of the island are just able to pound my beach landings like crazy. My CVs close by don't intervene at all (they are in fleet mode and well withing 5 hexes from the coast) so it's just a bloodbath.
Trying to get the Japanese CVs to spend their 2 interrupts on other units seems the only way to go around the problem, but it seems a bit gamey to me.
Am I missing something here?

What comes to mind is to stack invading transport with your CVs and pray your anti air is good enough.

From what i understand CVs cant intercept airplanes, so your CVs standing around within 5 hexes are doing nothing except burning oil. You can intercept enemy ships, but they have to move in within your 5 range. Also to attack enemy CVs on your turn you need to be within 3 range (not 5), so all of that combined quite heavily favors defender.
So my advice would be this: be first on the scene lol

If you have an enemy Carrier task force (CTF) sitting offshore of an objective you want to take by sea you have 3 options really.

1)Use a nearby base within 6 hexes of the carriers to set up a night action ambush using a large surface fleet. Potentially very risky as surface fleets have a low chance of targeting carriers and if your fleet fails to engage, they're sitting ducks on the opponents turn which can naval strike them twice. May be your only good option if your in the terrible position of having a weaker carrier fleet

2) Have your own CTF start the turn within 24 hexes of the enemy fleet, move to 3 hexes away and see how their interdiction move goes. If it's not favourable, use the second op point to retreat back to your starting port but if the enemy took more damage than you on the interdiction go for the naval strike. Best to do this if you think your fleet is even or stronger than the opponent's. Medium risk, very high reward.

3)Go somewhere else where you can support better or find a way to bring in more land based air assets. Even the most powerful fleets get degraded very quickly by a couple of cards of Naval Air bombers or fighters which massacre a CTF's air wing.

Well, first, your CVs will only intercept naval units that are 5 hexes from them. The way you describe it the Japanese are sitting off and using airstrikes to hit your beaches. CVs do not intercept aircraft. So, you need to move your CVs so that you either attack the Japanese CVs or when the Japanese move to attack your beaches you are there to intercept them.

The first thing you need for a naval invasion is air superiority. That requires air superiority units to stop the Japanese Bombers and CVs. I park the Hawaiian Island air group and let them do their job.
I then move in my Australian, New Zealand, and US Far East bomber groups. Now, I have bombers to intercept naval movements, such as the Japanese CVs, and I have fighters to escort them.

Now, with air superiority you can then move in your invasion forces. I would recommend escorting though because you never know when something will slip through.

Put the CVs with the invasion forces
Or clear the sea area.

A CV 150m away (3 hexes) isn't providing CAP for anyone.
