This looks like it MIGHT hit the sweet spot... if I can get over the initial hump of understanding the basics.

1. Am I running all the Allies, or just the US? If more than the US, do I have any control over the USSR? (I see I have access to their Tech screen.)
2. Are there only a handful of size 9 ports? And I can't improve the ones smaller than that? Is there a gazette of all the big ports so I don't waste a lot of time and effort to take ports that don't do much? (Feel free to tell me why I don't understand the importance of the smaller ports; I know I don't know what I am doing.)
3. Where are the lines showing where one zone ends and the next begins?

I am sure there will be more. Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, all of them. There are major countries (USSR/China/US/UK) and minors that are aligned with each (the rest), gaining some part of their tech. USSR only comes into the war historically in 1945 for very few turns unless Japan doesn't meet Manchuria garrison requirements.
2. Size 5+ are all the same for most things. There are, I'd say, at least 20. The only difference from size 5-9 is their supply capacity of 20 supply points per size. This matters if you're invading with large armies. One strength point needs one supply, so a size one port can support two divisions, size 5 can support 3 corps and a division, etc. Proportionally decreased evenly if not enough supply available.
3. What do you mean zone?

2. Size of ports matters a lot. Size 1-8 ports can supply that number of ships. So, if you have a fleet of 6 CVs and 5 BBs (11 ships) and you put them in a size 8 port someone is not getting supplies. A size 9 port supplies all ships. The creator did a good job of historically making the ports the right size. At this time there is no way to build a port up (cross fingers for an update).
3. This is not a "zone" game. This is a hex game.

Nope. It's ports 1-4 who can supply a limited number of naval groups. From 5 to 9 it supplies all navals groups in the port.

"Ports of size 5 or higher may not be attacked by enemy surface fleets. Any number of naval groups may supply at a major port. Minor ports are limited to supplying as many naval groups as their port size. Ports can hold any number of naval groups but minor ports, size 1 to 4, have a supply restrictions and may not repair naval groups"

Hm, this is from manual:
Naval Unit Port Supply – When naval units are at a major port, size 5 or greater, all naval units are resupplied at no cost to supply stockpile.

I'm quite certain that it is also in game, I was able to resupply my big fleets in size 5+ ports in one turn.

An interesting trick though is that ship supply won't decrease even if in a less than size 5 port with more than 5 ships so you're perfectly fine to keep a 20 ship stack in a size 3 port and they won't drop supply, it just won't resupply them all if they have less than 3 supply stock. I think they take up slightly more oil but it doesn't seem highly noticeable.

It's because they aren't doing anything. When out at sea they are patrolling.

Escorts must be assigned to zones, correct? Where are the zones?

Hover over a convoy lane on the map and it tells you which name it falls under.

Then go to the convoys menu screen and assign the escorts to that zone.
