Dem Pocket

I pull some more units out of the line, especially guards formations & artillery, to start their trek to the South. I have just enough strength to watch the Germans funnel out of the Dem pocket and wave goodbye but not enough strength to consider anything else. Hope they leave.

Velikie Luki

I hit Velikie Luki hard and was able to move the regiment out even with a reserve activation from another regiment.

Velikie Luki

I try my luck again to the south and was able to take this hex too. I DO NOT advance into any of these hexes except for Veliki Luki. Doing so could prove suicidal. My guys like their comfy Soviet foxholes but the red light district in Veliki Luki was too tempting.

Third time is a charm, taking another hex with level 3 fort down.

Reserve Front 2nd attack. A bit worse but I will take it. Neither hex will I occupy, doing so could end in extra losses unnecessarily.

Western Front is an absolute mess, in my opinion it is. I start re-organizing it. Pulled most guards out of the line. Move Armor Corps out of line.

This is an assualt front so this could be beneficial somewhere else. South looks pretty good ;-)

Center is pretty stagnant. I do retreat a hex in the Western Front area. Other than that, nothing.

Air Losses

I deleted all air directives and only flew Air superiority on the airfields around Stalingrad. I seem to have a ton of aircraft but not people to fly them. Will be looking at some disbands I believe but need to look at it further in detail when I get the turn back to make sure. The disband button gets me in trouble.

Yeah, you should be aware that your air force is considerably smaller than the same timeframe within the 41 campaign.

Yes, this AAR will 100% be going forward. Currently Q-ball is on turn 5 but I have been slammed at work with a ton of work(took over a whole cutover for a large company & just no time, thus had to hang up my guns for some time except for this game)

Turn 2

Just a couple of notes about how I play the Soviets worth mentioning. Granted everyone has their way of doing things but what I have found in WITE1 worked for me & I will try here until I learn the hard lesson otherwise. Without further ado here is my list.

#1. Infantry Corps take precedent over everything to build and spend points on. Yes, even over Artillery!

#2. I avoid combat with Minors (Italians & Rumanians) so I can instead inflict losses on Germans instead. IT is all about killing Germans. But if the Minors are in the way then so be it.

#3. I LOVE attacking into terrain other than clear hexes as Soviets. If I get an opening I have cover to occupy that hex and if I get a breakthrough to behind the Germans then the Germans have to attack into adverse terrain to reform their lines or give up some hexes. I absolutely LOVE doing this. Now as the game goes into 43-44 this isn't going to happen as often but in 42 & early 43 it will. That terrain gives Soviets a nice defensive bonus :-) But of course it is a double edge sword.

#4. I am in no hurry in 42 early 43. I will consolidate my position & build Inf Corps. The only place I am in a hurry is Stalingrad. I want to have Stalingrad captured by the end Dec to get the rail going forward here. With this rail and the rail further south Supply will be ample by Feb. At least I hope.

Leningrad

Ok, no attack this way which is a good thing since the Soviets can't really re-enforce this sector very well unless done by brigades. Last turn I sent a whole bunch of brigades to Leningrad to make them into Divisions and then into Corps if an attack came this way. It didn't. I will make a Corps this turn and re-enforce the line with that Corps and hold the rest of those brigades in reserve in Leningrad just in case.

I continue to wave as the Germans steadily vacate the area. I would even loan them some trucks to speed up the process if they would only ask ;-P

Just holding the line here with what was given to me. Started moving the Armor/Mech out of the area to be used elsewhere last turn.

Well, this is interesting! Big pull back in this area allowing the rail line to VL to be opened up marked in orange. I will think on this for a bit during the day and decide VL will be the sector I push because of this rail line. But first I have to take those two corner spots next to the rail from the Germans marked in Blue. If I can get one this turn I will start migrating to VL with Western Front. Huge move that will take many turns but that is what this game is about, seeing into the future.

Q-Ball did a few attacks and stopped. Guess he has his reasons but I will take it just the same. I will re-enforce the whole area with a defense that Ceaser did at Alesia. A donut defense with Soviet Inf Corps comprising of the center and brigades/Cav on the outside when avail & low toe infantry.

Pull back in the far south. I will just follow since I am taking the Inf Corps from this area, blowing up the rail line too by taking all of these north on the rail as quickly as possible that is, 100% utilization LOL.

Of course will just surround and force surrender the Rumanian unit not able to run fast enough.

Stalingrad Pocket

I force the Rumanians to surrender & I mow down the left top(NW section of the defense) of the German Defense consolidating the German pocket. My ultimate goal for a quick capture is to make the pocket as small as possible so the Germans have no place to retreat to having max stacking capacity in every hex. This will in effect cause the German units to retreat 20 hexes inside the pocket then ultimately surrender anyway (exaggeration used in that statement by the way on the amount of hexes retreating through). This should take another turn or two at the most, I hope.

You can also see the Soviet Corps forming the Center of this Donut on defense. I have all if not most of my Mech/Armor units broken down for Reserve activation if an attack comes from either side.

I will continue to form Inf Corps for defense in this area.

I force surrender the two German Moto regiment and push forward. I attack two Rum Cav and for a route/retreat. Trying to gobble up as much real estate as possible here for the time being.

You can also see the Inf Corps from down south heading North. You can also see the rail line in RED where I blew up the capacity. Hhehehehehe.

Vyazma

I attack the Regiments and they retreat to secure the rail line. Not enough MP's to occupy the hex. But I go ahead and commit to sending part of the Western Front to VL. See how this pans out. The transition is in process of re-organization of fronts.
