More specifically, they have a mini-blockade going on as early as early 1940, and I can't do much against it with my existing naval assets. Build navy myself and hit them back in a year or two? Or just ignore altogether - along with my sagging income?

In my last game with the Germans I pretty much kept to the Baltic with the surface navy. You don't have the numbers or naval tech to go head to head with the RN. Later on I used the surface fleet to round up and sink the Soviet Baltic Fleet. Even in that you can get some nasty bruises on your ships.

Yes. The British will chew on your convoy line from Norway. Get a maritime bomber and retaliate as best you can.

In War in Europe I was occasionally able to get some German surface ships up into Northern Norway to operate out of Narvik. It's a lot harder in this game without running into ambushes. Less hexes to play with.

Can you make enough U-boats to win a major engagement with the Royal Navy?

As for the Maritime Bomber option, you only get one though ;(

Agreed. The Eastern front, for instance, has no room to maneuver whatsoever. It's a veritable head-on collision on every hex.

Are you playing as Germany or all Axis powers?

Playing as Germany, I've found the best tactic is to keep the bulk of the fleet hugged around Denmark and the Baltic until it is strong enough to stand up to the Brits. Also, remember you have a few units raiding Atlantic convoys at the start. I keep forgetting about them and they end up being destroyed because I don't bring them home soon enough.

Using soft build, I create 1 or 2 Maritime bombers. These, combined with your upgraded fleet should give the Brits a big surprise when they launch their naval attack in the North Sea (which they do like clockwise)

Hope this helps.

Maritime are also good for recon. You can use them to over fly the North Sea and see if there is a path clear for the Kriegsmarine.

All Axis. Does it make much difference playing just Germany? Japan can't really come over to help, and I don't think Italy can get past Gibraltar either.

I've tried to bring my 3 Atlantic ships home ASAP, but they can never get inside the safe zone before the British fleet intervenes. So I am not sure it is even possible.

I've increased the Maritime Bomber limit to 2, so I hope this works. I think Germany should have more Maritime Bombers anyways.

Just keep them lurking until French ports available. My German navy, with a little fortuitous judgment, is pretty competent at preventing an Allied amphibious invasion of Europe if I coax them along like a little flower garden.

Oh, I have only tried to bring them into the Baltic. I guess the French ports are an option, too!

Northern Norway is good too. Once the UK to USSR convoy route opens up you can dash them in and out of port to do some convoy raiding.

Each BB or CV has a base cost of 350 MPP not to mention the long wait at the shipyard. You'd be starving your land army of badly needed strength to try a deal with an inconvenience.

Go east young man. That where the resources are.

It's worth noting that the British have virtually nothing blocking the way out of the North Sea on the (1939) first turn of the game.

So if you want to send the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Admiral Scheer & assorted U-Boats hurtling out into the big blue ocean on turn one, just skirt the Norwegian coast while using naval cruise. They'll be in the clear.

After they've had their fun raiding convoys in the Atlantic you can always return them to occupied Norway or France.

Keeping the German fleet near friendly land. Initially, stick to Denmark and the Baltic, using a maritime bomber and MDM to punish any RN ships that stray too close. Don't reveal the maritime bomber till they get sloppy with their CV's or BB's. At the start of Barbarossa, send a maritime bomber, fighter, and MDM to Norway. Have as sub wolfpack with 1-2 CA/CC's operating with them. This generally will draw a response from the Royal Navy. Once the RN attacks your pack, then unleash your land based air to hit a known ship, draw out any CV air, and reveal other ships, then hit and run with your subs and CA's.

At the start of the game, you can also send your at sea ships south in an extended move. Concentrate on reducing the South African convoy port. Set a CA/CC in the port zone and flank it on both sides with subs in "silent" mode, so the Allied player doesn't detect them when they send ships racing to remove your CA. A pack of 1-2 CA's with 2-3 subs can do some damage.

Havoc, I like how that starts, but a long way home for repairs.

Yeah, that's my concern with sending the German fleet too far, unless it's a submarine.

Don't do it then. Keep the bulk of your fleet in the Baltic and add some air power to stop the Brits when they try to break in. Air power is key. Some MBs and TAC's along with your ships will make sure the Brits are beaten back with a bloody nose.

Historical fact: When Churchill was put in charge of the admiralty one of the 1st things he did was order a feasibility study of a RN clean up of the Baltic. If this was successful, he thought it would bring Sweden/Norway closer to the UK and cut off axis supplies. Admirals and staff concluded that the main problem was German air power. It could be done, but the RN would need at least a 30% surface fleet advantage of all types. They needed those ships elsewhere so it never happened.

I know this because I read it in a book.

Keep the fleet in the Baltic at the start of the game. Concentrate on land conquest instead.

Yeah, that's been my current strategy. It's just more that I was frustrated by the Norway convoy being constantly raided and felt the need to do something :(

IMO, accept the minor convoy losses for now and deal out dreadful revenge later.

That is reassuring then, since I've eating those convoy losses with the same rationalization! ;)

No sweeter revenge than sinking an arrogant UK carrier in the Baltic with just a sub and MB. They soon learn their lesson.
