RAINMAP V 1.1 released

I made this map trying to resemble the colours of old "rainy day in russia" variation of Jisons fantastic Wite map. So full of green tones and brown mountains.

All modifications only alter TILES files, no hexart file so it is fully compatible with pre-existing matches.

Most elements can be cherry-picked to taste, I separate them in 5 categories that can be installed separately.

DISCLAIMER:
This mod is not my own design, most tiles are simply the magnificent stock ones modified via GIMP, with these notable exceptions:

- Forest and Wood are using overkill´s PrettyTrees mod v0.3 (with colour variations).
- Swamp, urban, cityes and towns are "recycled" design from Jison´s rainy day on russia Wite Map
- Ferrys and all new mistakes on previous tiles are all my original work.

NOTES:

I will be maintaining the map to the extend of my capabilities, there are known mistakes , as some hexes border in light snow weather and will be very happy tobe pointed to a lot more of them.

Map names are obscured - specially in forest areas- they should look better on white/clear colour, I will work on a font set to improve this .but that modification WILL need a new game to be started. For those who really want to see names withouth changing fonts I suggest installing prettytrees INSTEAD of my "Trees" own module.

- substituting ferry icon
- not yet fully satisfied with rough tiles, and rivers and all sea are yet from stock

1.1 Alternate clear/coast tiles for easier heavy snow recognition

Installation

Simply unzip selected modules into your TILES folder.

FILES

google DRIVE all files

RAINMAP-CORE

- includes clear, coast, swamp, water, urban/town/cityes, rough and mountain tiles

RAINMAP-RAIL.zip?dl=0

- includes single and double rail lines with "bed paths" to make them more visible.

RAINMAP-TREES.zip

- Forest and woods, as commented previously they tan be subtituted harmlessly with PrettyTrees mod v0.3

RAINMAP-RIVER.zip

- mayor and minor rivers, in "high contrast" format. you can left stock ones -simply so not install this part- for a more smooth map look

RAINMAP-FERRY.zip

- Only a smaller icon for ferrys.

RAINMAP-EDIF.zip
- modified edifications (towns, cityes urban and heavy urban tiles) greater contrast and some minor amendments

RAINMAP-more snow, alternative clear and coast tiles for easier distingish snow from heavy snow.

RAINMAP-GuiFonts.zip

RAINMAP-w_maptext.zip

Fonts and MAPTEXT USE WITH CAUTION . I really advice dooing your own combination, I only add this ones for completion

fonts have to be extracted in C:\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2\Dat and the change the font and size on ALL YOUR GAMES.
Maptext have to be extracted in C:\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2\Dat\GenData and does only apply to new matches created after its instalation

Very nice, as well! Especially considering it's a bit harder to mod a map in this version compared with WitE 1.

Looks really nice!
Just one suggestion, maybe tone down the wood color a bit as the text seems harder to read.

I agree with beamslam, consider toning down the wood color as it makes text and rail lines very hard to see/read.

I think you are both right, it was in my intent changing map text to clear colors, but I think it cannot be done (or I do not know how).

Right now I am working on making mud levels more homogenous in different terrain types (i.e swamps were a different tone) next on the list is revisiting forest for snow graphics and I will try to tone them down

First wave of changes:

Main changes:
- Forest and Wood lighted somewhat to easier locating rails (using again the great overkill´s PrettyTrees mod v0.3 with colour modifications)
- High visibility rivers added, (maybe too high in minor rivers).
- little modifications on clear and rough tiles tone to solve some problems with land weather depiction

Map now is fully playable (to my knowing!) so I will upload the files for those who want test it in this state

to do list yet includes:

- Mountains currently not showing snow graphics
- substituting ferry icon
- all sea/lakes are yet from stock, waitin to decide about rivers first to tackle with sea

For those who want to try the BETA map here is the file, it has to be extracted (if you used default installation) in

C:\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2\Dat\Art\

Make a copy of TILES folder and DELETE the folder before extraction (I removed some COAST tiles, will make them empty on final version to avoid this)

tiles.zip

Just for quick feedback, I think I prefer the rivers as they were originally. The minor river in this latest iteration looks a bit too bright/light.

Agree with this. Otherwise, looks super promising. Looking forward to final release.

In addition I made a quick test substituting overkill´s own tree by a jison "facsimile". In fact I prefer the overkill version as they seem more realist (and readying jison´s for weather will be a hell of a work) but would like to have a second opinion.

I'd definitely run with this, and agree that Overkill's trees are perfectly fine.

I don't know which one was made by who, but the left image is far superior IMO.

All looks very nice. Personally I'd tone down the swamp background a bit, its a bit too much contrast with the clear terrain. I prefer Overkill's trees, again perhaps mute the colours a bit more? I just prefer the old faded map look.

Tip for the railroads: add a pixel or two around the lines in the art tiles. This creates clearings through the forests which helps them stand out. It does create a sort of causeway across rivers, but I quite like that - I can claim its a bridge.

Thanks for the work so far

The map is looking quite nice. Overkills trees are very neat and realistic to look at and give a nice vibrant look to the map. I agree that the minor rivers are a bit too light and might need to be toned down a bit. The Ferry hex icons are looking good. Also consider increasing the contrast of the houses in the cities, they look a bit too pale.

I think TallBlondJohn really hit the hammer in the head with his suggestion of creating clearings through the woods and heavy woods hexes where rail lines go through. This was done in Jisons map mode too and made everything very clear to see as you could def tell where the rail was going through. The suggestion of toning down the swamp background to better fit with the clear hexes is a good one too.

Here is an example:

Keep up the good work!
