Today's air losses.

You still fly Wildcats on your carriers in late 44?

Only on CVE, and some CVE have Hellcats. That will change soon.

Darn, Japan did well!

Your cap was low I think...

Sam is an amazing game changer for a while! And Grace is no slouch either!

Forgot to ask...

I've been pretty much leaving my carrier CAP at 10,000 ft. You think it should be higher?

Not just the dive bonus, but your planes would have been able to assemble faster/quicker...i.e. been in a better position to foil the attack.

Also what was the range setting? Quite a few out of position.

Stack your CAP with 0 range in a heavily skewed right distribution from 5K to 20K, with perhaps some a little bit higher to watch out for high altitude torpedo bombers. Say 3/4th of fighters are between 18 and 20K. A lot of times your scrambling/standbye planes will seemingly engage at lower altitudes...

That has worked well for me...ymmv.

Thanks.

I've been keeping all at 10k, range long so some would escort strikes (which have been limited to 6 hexes recently).

I haven't wanted to raise the CAP much for worry about low raids (which have less radar warning time), but I'll manage CAP more and put most of it up to 20k.

I suggest that you may want to consider having just some fighter units fly only CAP. That way those can be at various altitudes with more fighters on standby.

Yeah, I've been thinking that. And if the CVE's happen to be with the fleet carriers, let the CVE's air groups escort the strikes while all the fleet units fly defense. CAP 10k, 15k, 20k.

CVEs fly CAP since they probably don't have the best fighters while their TBs fly Search and ASW missions.

I was thinking have the best fighters and pilots on CAP while have the CVE's fighters interfere with the IJN CAP.

No?

The CVEs don't have as large of an air group plus they can go into an invasion hex or another base hex for support purposes there.

I would like to shred a couple of hundred Sams over my own ships (no friendly pilot rescue) to take out elite pilots.

• CVE Shah made it into port at Manado without incident. She has put her air groups ashore because even when pumped out she will not be able to operate them.

• The CVE's will move to Manado where damaged CVE will peel off and join Shah when she heads to Peal Harbor for repairs. Most of the CVE here will head for Pearl soon enough for upgrades anyway.

• The fleet carriers must replenish their air groups, but Manado just made seize 6 airfield. I am sending them to Watampone (size 9) to do that, then the CVE will do likewise.

Philippines

• Enemy carriers and battleships are 1 hex SE of Balabac in the Sulu Sea. Apparently they are exiting the Sulu Sea by a different route to lessen sub encounters.

• The upgraded fleet carriers continue to cross the Philippine Sea, and when they arrive near Mindanao we will send in the invasion of Dadjangas. I anticipate the KB continuing to retire.

• Tomorrow the B-29's will strike the airfields at Manila. 55 fighters are present there, but we did not get recon results for Clark yet.

China

• Hammerhead gets the idea.

Allied forces CAPTURE Pakse !!!

Overall

• Enemy carriers and battleships in the South China Sea 6 hexes NW of Kudat. Moving NW, they are most likely heading for Cam Ranh Bay or Saigon to replenish, but they could make a sprint into striking range of the RN carriers.

• The F4U-1D Corsair (Service Rating 1) is in full production, over a hundred a month, so we will upgrade some fleet CV squadrons to that as well as Hellcat -5. All CVE are upgrading to F6F-5 and the pool is so large (more than 1,100 when I started) that it will take them a long time to burn through it and need to move on to another model.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• SoPac HQ is boarding ships and will establish headquarters on Satawal to support the Truk operation.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Uneventful.

Looks like your opponent expected that B-29 raid on Manila. Maybe you are becoming too predictable about trying port strikes where lots of shipping is spotted?

BTW, Albacores are not biplanes - but Swordfish and Vildebeests are.

I can't be sure if he did or not, but he was certainly ready for it.

Makes me wonder what the reception over Japan will be like. I might have to start night bombing for firestorms early.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Enemy carriers and battleships are 5 hexes west of Bataan.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• Rearranging things for the B-29's and their support. The B-29's are now all in the southern Marianas but support is not present for all of them.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The fleet carriers made it to Watampone where they upgraded aircraft to fill out their complements. Fighters were upgraded to -5 Hellcat, -D Corsair, and most to -1A Corsair as they are the most available at the moment. The carriers were not able to rearm due to the port size so now they will head for Sorong which has a slightly larger port and far more naval support.

Philippines

• Got one! But not Akagi.

• No fighters at Clark Field. All that damage to the B-29's was done by 40+ fighters at Manila. They must be the Abbeville Boys.

With the exception of one squadron which is on Babeldaob temporarily, all those ultra long range recon is on the northernmost Mariana island. So, yes. I did stop recon because I was losing aircraft without being ready to send the B-29's. No loss, just conserving airframes.

The Dadjangas invasion (unoccupied) will go in followed by a base force to support recon Lightnings which can reach Clark and Manila, then the uber long recon sqn goes back to B-29 support. Since I am still shuffling base forces I'm not really losing anything. I could start bombing with some B-29's anytime but I want maximum effort to get some damage done because I know he has arranged an epic reception.

How do those big B-29 variant recon planes operate out of Iwo-jima? Any good or too many ops losses? From there I can see more but of course can't hit those distant places yet.

I don't see why they wouldn't be good, especially if you watch them a bit.

Looks like your opponent expected that B-29 raid on Manila. Maybe you are becoming too predictable about trying port strikes where lots of shipping is spotted?

BTW, Albacores are not biplanes - but Swordfish and Vildebeests are.

Sadly, they're biplanes. They do get a nifty enclosed cockpit though, lest the crew be torn to pieces by the 170 mph top speed.

Darn! All the times I looked at that graphic for the Albacore in the game (side view only) the upper wing was easily seen but the lower one is virtually invisible with just the end of the wing visible. I thought all the other structure was just extra support for the high wing, joining to the lower fuselage to make a triangle (as float planes are usually constructed). Good thing this is a new month or I would have learned two new things in the same month!

• The convoy with the base force for Dadjangas should arrive there and begin unloading in 2 days.

• Our fleet carriers just west of Dadjangas will now move to support the Balabac operation as the other fleet carriers (which recently replenished aircraft at Watampone and stores at Sorong) will be on station tomorrow to aid the escort carriers.

• The foray toward Balabac could have a nicely disturbing effect because our fleet carriers and their surface escorts are not currently spotted.

• Recon was way off about Vinh. Our troops did very well considering fatigue from marching, almost all the infantry being less well equipped Chinese Army squads (but with good experience), and fortifications plus terrain being on the enemy's side. A Bde is on the way in and will arrive in a few days; other reinforcements are farther out.

• We have a base force that just railed into Udon Thani; they will truck to Vientiane, then march to Luangprabang to get the size 4 airfield there operating.

• Tomorrow all the units to begin reduction will be in place outside the walled city of Bangkok.

• In 2 days the blocking force will be in place east of Ubon, signaling the attack for the next day.
