Rail Conversion Question - 6/14/2021 11:53:37 AM

Ok. I just started playing WIE 2. I am very familiar with the original WIE. That being said, I have a question about the rail conversion. ON the first turn, in the Army Group North area, I have advanced my infantry divisions deep into Lithuania on the first turn. Needless to say, I need to get my rail conversion unit going, and start converting some rail lines, so I grab the unit and have it start converting the rail line from Taurage to Radvilskis. I brought the unit up to the border, and started by converting the first two hexes in Lithuanian territory, which happened to still be pink (i.e. still in Soviet control), and I was able to convert those two hexes with no problem. Then I advanced another hex, but this time, when I advanced another hex to the north along the rail line, the RRC value disappeared, and a dash (-) appeared, so that I could not convert the rail in that hex. That particular hex and the next 3 to the North of it are grey (German control), so does that have something to do with it? Also, my unit has plenty of movement points left (6 movement point left). At any rate, this is critical that I continue to change these rail lines over, or my Pz. divisions are soon going to be lest high and dry. I seem to remember this same issue while playing the original War in the East, and I never was able to figure out how to solve it in that game either. So, why is my unit unable to convert these rail lines, even though they have plenty of movement points left?
Thanks.

Brian B.

I'll start by stressing this really isn't WiTE1 with some new rules. Some pretty fundamental stuff is different.

so in this case, turn on the rail repair map mode, in the Baltics you will see a mixture of destroyed and captured intact (but most likely isolated). I suggest a read of 11.4 as to what is going on in this respect.

now bigger question, why are you using your FBD repair capacity on a single track rail line? A quick glance at the table in 22.4.3 (& its mentioned elsewhere) indicates a single track rail hex only has 40% of the capacity of a dual rail hex. More importantly you can send 5000 tons of freight down a dual track with no penalty (only 2000 for single track).

So, think about what you want to repair.

The other bit is that railyards of 2 or larger are very important both for depots and rail movement capacity.

so best to check out (a) where the dual rails go; and, (b) where the railyards are?

Unfortunately, there are no dual rail lines running north in Lithuania. There is a dual rail line running east out of Lithuania at Virbalis, but FB2 has that covered, so I need to convert some rail with FB1, and all that is left is single track lines, so single track lines it is. Never the less, none of this explains why I am not able to convert the rail line in the German controlled areas.

it does actually, use the rail map mode, my very strong suspicion is the hex you are trying to repair is already repaired ... and to understand how WITE2 treats the Baltic rail network suggest a wee glance at 11.4.

as to the other, that is a matter of judgement but you can use 2 FBD on the same rail line and that dual rail splits between Vilnius and Minsk

When I turn on the rail damage info, the three rail hexes to the north of the rail unit are yellow, so are these rail hexes (the ones with the yellow dots) not in need of conversion?

Ok. Reading 11.4 answers my question. Thanks!
