I'm hoping the forum can offer some tips on when shore bombardment (and the resulting naval strength point losses) is worthwhile. I tend to be very conservative and only use dreadnoughts, and only when I can lower front line supply with the shore bombardment resource reduction (e.g. hitting Gaza as Entente when the Ottoman front line is at the Suez Canal).

Thanks for any help!

To find the answer for this in the specific situation have a look here https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4924897&mpage=1&key=supply%26%2365533%3B,
especially post 3 point 22 (the part about what HQs "make" out of a specific base supply). The rest is unfortunatelly math...

But in your situation you have a second option: just do naval bombardement vs the enemy spearhead (assuming they are not in a town). Ships don't do damage vs land units, but their demoralization still applies. With the kind of ships you have in the med you should be able to debuff a turkish corps to almost total helplessness. Just be careful to not end your ship's turn on the hexes of the channel itself! Ships on hexes that can be entered by both land and sea units are very vulnerable to land attack.

By far, one of the best pieces of work I've seen here on the SC forums...this analysis by mdsmall.
...and yes Bavre, even us warmongering history deconstructors have to at least acknowledge the numbers, if not totally comprehending the fickle beauties.

Yes! Demoralization was exactly the tip I was looking for. Thank you! I'm sure that function of shore bombardment is painfully obvious to most folks on here, but apparently I'm not most folks.

mdsmall's Treatise on Supply is my new go-to cheat sheet. I'm slowly wrapping my head around how supply works. Just one of the things that makes the learning curve in this game so much fun

Of course that little bump your ships get in experience every time they can bombard doesn't hurt either.

It's just a bit confusing initially that some attacks (shore bombardment, railgun ...) have two different modes depending on whether the target hex contains some sort of structure or not. I really wished there was a toggle.

About XP: note that not just the ships, but also the target unit gets some! So if you do a lot of shore bombardement on one unit, make sure to hit it hard in the same round or you might regret it later.
