Alcohol-abuse drug Antabuse kills cancer cells

by Karolinska Institutet

This Extremely Common Drug Given to Alcoholics Also Kills Cancer Cells, and We Finally Know Why
By Dana Dovey On 12/10/17 at 10:10 AM EST

Disulfiram (Antabuse) is a drug given to alcoholics to prevent them from drinking, but for decades doctors have noticed the medication appears to have an unexpected side effect: fighting cancer. Now, new research from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden has revealed the biological mechanism behind Antabuse's effect on cancer.

The study, published earlier this week in Nature, is the culmination of years of research and the combined efforts of scientists from five countries. In the paper, the team explains how Antabuse appears to "freeze" tumor growth by inhibiting an important protein.

Antabuse is an odorless and nearly tasteless powder that, when consumed, causes an unpleasant physical reaction with alcohol, ranging from sweating and hyperventilation to nausea and vomiting. The drug works by interfering with the body's ability to metabolize or break down alcohol. Specifically, the drug disables aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme in the liver that breaks down alcohol, allowing the body to process it. If aldehyde dehydrogenase is unable to function, alcohol builds up in the bloodstream and causes physical problems.
Newsweek Newsletter sign-up >

However, as shown in this new study, Antabuse has another effect on the body. For their study, the researchers observed the drug's effect on both living mice and on human cancer cells. In doing so, they noted that when the drug is metabolized it causes the protein, NPL4, to clump together with the enzyme p97, immobilizing the protein. This "freezes" the cancer cells and prevents them from disposing of unnecessary proteins. The build-up stresses the cancer cells and eventually causes them to die, Science Mag reported.

Results were even more pronounced when the drug was combined with copper, and the drug did not discriminate when it came to what type of cancer cells it killed. In the study it was just as helpful in killing prostate, breast and colon cancer. In addition, only cancer cells are affected by Antabuse while normal cells seem to be unharmed. The reason for this is unclear.
Related: Using artificial intelligence to find cancer cures

The connection between the drug and cancer treatment dates back decades, with the first case report acknowledging the connection published in 1977 in Progress in Clinical and Biological Research. The case detailed a breast cancer patient who also was an alcoholic. She was given Antabuse to treat her alcoholism, but an autopsy upon her death (which was due to falling from a window, not cancer) revealed that her body was clinically cancer-free despite having no further cancer treatment. In fact, the only drug she had continued to use was Antabuse.

Not coral polyps which is too bad since the corals can use all of the help that they can get.

They were the type that they call precancerous because they might possibly somehow turn into cancer. So they won't say that they were just polyps because if something was missed and it turned into cancer, the lawyers would love it. Two polyps, one 0.4 cm long and one 0.5 cm long, of the Tubular Adenoma type. Not even large enough to make decent bullets.

Grill corn on the cob in the husk, cut off the stem end, squeeze out the corn, roll on buttered bread. Or soak the corn in salted water to drive out any fresh meat, pull back the husk, butter the corn, put the husk back up and secure it without using plastic or rubber, it will have a smokey, buttery taste.

Grill ripe but not too soft bananas in the peel for 2 to 3 minutes, turn over, grill for 2 to 3 minutes until it is soft, remove from the grill, cut the blossom end and squeeze the fruit out of the peel onto a dish. This will taste like banana bread. Eat it that way or top it with ice cream, whipped cream, and/or chocolate . . .

Thickly slice bread, grill it to desired browness, butter with garlic butter . . .

Use a frisbee as a paper plate holder . . .

Have a happy Father's Day! We have a cool, wet one.

The idea is to make the meal and have as little clean up as is possible. With the frisbees, the paper plates, even if overloaded, won't drop the food for the dogs to eat. Then you have a toy for after eating . . . This should be good for children as well.

I forgot, take onions, peel and core them, rinse them off, then place on a square of aluminum foil, put butter in the core hole, seasoned salt and any other flavorings such as garlic, wrap up the onion, put either on the grill or in the charcoal for about one hour.

Take fish fillets, smaller fish like perch or other panfish, clean them, wrap in bacon, wrap them in aluminum foil, put them on the grill for 20-25 minutes, turning once. The bacon gives the fish a nice flavor and keeps the fish from sticking. Or season said fish, add lemon and onion slices, then wrap them in aluminum foil, place them on the grill for 20-25 minutes, turning once.

I did as well. I also saw some from a long time ago, I might copy and paste those other recipes with the appropriate references.

The art of being lazy is not putting off tomorrow what you can do today. The art of being lazy is not bothering to do what you don't have to do at all. So when grilling, be as lazy as is possible to reduce and/or eliminate the cleanup afterwards. Thus, grill everything including the desserts then use disposable plates.

I have a lot of shape!

The idea is to do things with as little cleanup as is possible so I don't have to be on my feet - such as they are.

Put a pot of salted water to boil. Add rotini pasta and cook until they are about one minute away from al dente. Drain but not completely.

Meanwhile, warm up some good olive oil and butter in a saute pan. Add garlic, then onions, peppers, mushrooms and other fresh veggies like summer squash from the garden which are all cut to the approximate size of the pasta. Add water from the pasta as needed, the little bit of starch will help to thicken. If using dried herbs like basil, parsley, oregano, and/or a mix, add them now. If using fresh herbs, add them later. When the pasta is done as above and the veggies are also almost done, add the drained pasta to the veggies and sauce. Cook until finished. Top with fresh ground black pepper, Parmesan, Romano . . .

If desired, add anything from skim milk to cream for a white sauce.

If desired, add diced cooked, leftover boneless chicken.

If desired and using a good non-stick pan, before adding the pasta stir in and let melt fresh meltable cheese like farmers cheese, pepper jack cheese, mozzarella, or even blue cheese . . .

If desired, take frozen but cooked salad/cocktail shrimp, thaw even under running water, then remove the tails and veins, then add to the sauce about a minute before the pasta to warm them up . . .

Think of all of the veggies, protein, and carbs with the seasonings. A good source of all that you need except for some partially desugared grape juice. Use a good yeast to desugar the grape juice or buy it that way. This can be the main meal or a side dish.
