I thaught I read somewhere that the larger calibur guns were two part, powder and shell.. Was that the 122mm thats in the IS-2 or the 152 thats in the IS-152.. Wondering why the IS-2 ROF is slow.. (I do realize that its a huge round)

Good question, i know the German Jagdtiger used two parters in the 12.8cm guns. would make sense if the same was true for the Stalins

If memory serves, the two-part rounds (powder and shell) are still the case for big russian guns. I am pretty sure that the 125mm on the T-72 and T-80 used two-part rounds as well. Unfortunately I don't have my reference material with me now, but looking into current Russian hardware may shed some light on the subject. Hope this helps.

Both 122mm and 152mm rounds were two part. Obviously, this resulted in a rather low rate of fire for the IS-2. Also, because the IS-2 was very heavily armored for its size (weight about the same as Panther), crew space was limited and it only carried 28 rounds of ammunition (compared to 81 for the Panther). I could not find any info on the IS-152 but on the IS-122 and IS-2 the Gun Model was the D-25T and D-25S which used the 53-OF-471 projectile with 53-VOF-471 Charge for HE and the 53-BR-471 Projectile with 53-VBR-471 Charge for AP, so it seems the larger Russian guns used a 2 part system. i would be very surprised if the t-72/t-80 have 2part rounds, im not sure how the auto-loader would do that efficiently. but i have no info, just an observation. i know the US 105mm light arty piece still uses a 2part round. had lots of fun shooting them in 92.
