You traded 2 USN CVs for the two IJN CVs? That's pretty good for this stage of the war, though when I played the full campaign I did everything possible to keep the USN CVs safe. But the Coral Sea scenario is a good one to get a feel for how things run. In the Grand campaign you won't want your CVs doing much interesting until they at least have full fighter loads, which is difficult to do early war - some miserable Wildcat replacement rates.

You learned a lot. Don't forget to try both sides.

I might have been able to save at least one of my carriers but both sides seeing they had no place to land kept going back for wave after wave. The Yorktown made it one hex and the Lexington four.
I really need to get the air search out from the ship based planes. I neglected that doing only the land based ones.
My subs were a lot more effective than I figured they would be wrecking some real havoc on the transports, but the B-17s were largely worthless. They got one ship and were largely only an annoyance to the landings after that. Had to try as that was all I had left with the carriers gone.
Not really crazy about playing the IJN. Don't mind playing Germans. I sympathize with the poster about playing them in the old Midway game by AH. But not since. I still have it somewhere around here!

No, don't sympathize with the Japanese but they have much different capabilities with their Kates and Zeroes. Their ships are much more fragile - especially in regards to fires!

use the B-17s for air search, that is their best use in the Coral Sea scenario.

Now just think if you would have tried the Grand Campaign without going through this first!

Second game the score was better 1731 to 1081 mostly due to sinking most of his invasion TFs. I sent the small AU TF up there to see what it could do and it what fun watching the turkey shoot! The other half was from carrier based planes. Did lose both carriers again only sinking the Shokaku and badly damaging the Zuikaku. I need to figure out how damage control works. See if I can put out the fires.

Escort TFs, cruise speed, and as many extra escorts as you can find to help.

The manual was included in your download.

There is also just a little bit of information here:

Ok, thanks I found the folder but do not see much about damage control or about putting out fires. A search merely mentions the allied advantage at it.

Damage control and firefighting is automated.

It's under the hood. You have no control....GP

Crew experience affects damage control.

The Ship's CO might affect damage control (I don't recall but I think so).

Having other ships with good crews and leaders in the same TF can result in them aiding firefighting on a ship in the same TF.

I'm not sure, but maybe Naval Support at a port will help if the ship is disbanded.

The most important thing is what RJ said - set cruise speed to avoid/limit additional flooding. And get to a port. Depending on condition and distance this could be a piddly little port, disband and hope for the best. Even badly roughed up Allied ships are lost if they get to a midsize port.

Edit - NOT LOST - where the emoji is.....
