Hi,

I'm learning the game and I got these three questions for now...

a) Clearly, railroads are extremely important in this game. And I think I understand most of it, except this...

What exactly determines that a railroad get's damaged during a turn? Any battle in the hex damages it, of course, but what else?

I ask because there are several hexes in my turn where the railroads get damaged when the hex flips ownership even when there was no battle on that hex. Nor was there any bombing, unit retreating into, units next to it, depot, no airfield,... Nothing. The railroad just gets damaged. This happens with both single lines as double ones, on clear land and non-clear land,.

And it always gets damaged at "Axis Rail Damage 100".

In other words: is there a way to prevent it getting damaged?

b) How many battles can one support unit fight per turn? Is it only one battle per turn? Every battle where it is in range and passes the tests until it runs out of ammo? What happens when it runs out of supply or fuel before it runs out of ammo? ...

The Soviets used a different gauge of railroad than the rest of Europe, so all rail lines will be damaged when you capture them. The exception is the Baltics, where there’s a 70% chance to capture an undamaged rail for the first few turns. You have to repair the rail lines with the FBD units and rail repair support units.

Section 22.6 of the manual explains it in detail.

a) rail hexes can get damaged if they flip ownership, see the rules in 7.4.3 and 7.3.3 for what is probably happening. They don't get partially damaged but can be partially repaired (you'll usually see 1% damage in a hex that has just been repaired that turn)

b) there is no 'support unit' concept in the game. Combat units draw their supply from depots, after a battle units try to acquire replacement ammo etc so will do so if they pass the appropriate leadership rolls and there is freight in the nearby depots (nearby is a deliberately unprecise term as its a very variable system)

I think question b) was asking if a support unit can be involved in more than one battle per turn. On-map reserve activation is dependent upon MP remaining, but how many times can an SU attached to a HQ be used in a turn? Until it is unready?

Indeed. I updated the question. Thanks for pointing it out.

The manual said that flipping it "usually results" in damage, nothing else. It did not say under which conditions, which is why I asked. So, thanks for explaining!

Maybe the manual should be adapted to "always results in damage. With the exception of the Baltics in...".

Thanks for the answers!
And for b), see above, I meant "support units".
