� As mentioned below, our CVE will withdraw to Manadao through the Java Sea. Those are (I think) the last CVE which need their AA upgrades so they have to leave theater anyway. But we don't know what the IJN forces will do. It seems clear they are trying to cover for shipping with what might be the last shipments of oil from the DEI, but they might also be covering for troop movements. It's also possible that the combat might takethe risk of sweeping around Borneo with the understanding that we have reduced our naval commitment to this area so as to continue the drive on the Home Islands. To deal with the possibility of what would essentially be a spoiling raid by the IJN, we are sending two CV TF with 4x CV and 3x CVL and one SC TF with 2x fast BB to a staging area in the Celebes Sea. If the IJN does make a sweep around Borneo, our CVE will provide a goodly number of additional Hellcats.

� Our CVE might have been the target, but we fool them and be elsewhere. Our CVE will head back to Manado through the Java Sea. Where will the Imperial fleet go? Fighter protection has been beefed up at Victoria point to protect shipping.

� We have very poor scouting on the enemy carriers, in fact almost none at all. The closest thing to carriers we see is some CS.

� After a couple of days for other forces to gather the main force (then assembled) will cross the river east from Hanoi and march on LangSon.

� B-29 target: Tokyo, Manpower; night, 5,000 ft.

� With good DL (9/15) I noticed a significant reduction in the fighters stationed at Tokyo, down to 135. Obviously not ideal but perhaps an opportunity. Heavy losses to flak expected.

� The Chichi-jima invasion force and will leave Agrihan to linger just north while the escort forces take up position. D-Day expected in 4 days.

� Haha-jima invasion forces will begin loading tomorrow at Vanimo on New Guinea.

� The plan is still for a big sweep and daylight B-29 raid on a large industrial target on Honshu, but owing to the expected recovery time the B-29's will need after tonight's Tokyo raid I assume that will come after the Haha-jima invasion.

Air losses. It looks like B-29 losses were dead even with opposing fighter losses. And compared to the hits achieved, B-29 losses were surprisingly low!

Tokyo. Not so much damage is showing up just yet. The strategic points are nice but damaging the war-waging ability of the Empire is paramount to closing with the Home Islands and overcoming resistance.

� 480 AV on Chichi-jima. The troops will rest to recover high Disruption. We have an additional Rgt and two smaller units on Pagan which I thought we did not need for Chichi-jima, but I will bring them in before the next assault to keep casualties to a minimum. Tokyo. It seems that overall the raid on Tokyo damaged about 1/3 of Light Industry, 1/4 of Heavy Industry, and a smaller proportion of some other factories.

More: from 2,658 to 6,000 (56%!!!). A handful might have been late accounting from Nagoya and Hamamatsu but I don't think so. Very productive raid, and it took far less in the way of casualties than I anticipated.

� 544 AV on Chichi-jima. Although not really needed, we are unloading more supplies on Chichi-jima so the troops are swimming in supply and recover that much faster. Overkill with supply does seem to make a difference in these amphibious operations.

� The night fighter Hellcats have moved to Yap, and one CVE TF will move from Chichi-jima toward Yap to get in range and conduct a transfer tomorrow. Two CVE will each take on 2 squadrons of 12 and put ashore their daylight Hellcats.

� The invasion convoys for Haha-jima will be on station in about 5 days and land troops the day after.

� A more extensive net of lifeguard submarines has been deployed off the Home Islands.

� The additional USA Base Force is in place on Iwo-jima and we will be able to sweep with 6 squadrons of P-51D totaling 150 fighters.

� Beginning to pick targets for the next B-29 raid: listing only the undamaged production/research units for each, interesting factories:
- Tokyo has LI 1,482; Armament Assembly 135; George 21; Shinden 31; Sam 29; Frank 61; Ki-83 31. Lots of engines too but no Ha-45 factory. Tokyo also now sports 312 fighters. I wonder how many are assigned to night CAP? 1,398 guns. How many are flak, and what would be a prudent altitude for a daylight raid?
- Yokohama/Yokosuka has 363 LI; Armament Assembly 47; Vehicle Assembly 16; Ha-45 121; Frank 61. 208 fighters, 589 guns.

How much AAA gun were in the CVE task forces? What was moonlight like?

Rare to see a hit I think, though the Peggy T is one tough bird. I tried once with advanced Betties, about 300 of them against the Deathstar and no hits, 50% disabled or so with plenty shot down despite no NF on duty and decent pilots.

I have seen JFBs use Emilys with 80+ experience pilots get hits...but those guys drop two fish each.

In perusing NF for the Allies, they arrive earlier than Japan and seem substantially better. Not sure about numbers and CV capable squadrons though.

On bombing being very blunt: I still don't know what you are bombing for and how it meshes with your future plans. It seems to me you are dabbling and have no cohesive plan.

Peggy T is the best land based naval torpedo bomber Japan has...and by quite a margin.

I suggest that for bombing that instead of trying to hit everything that you can, try to bomb either the important engine factories for the engines for the best fighters and/or the fighter factories themselves. All other targets are secondary targets.

Not sure until I look next turn, but they are pretty good now with all the CVE upgraded. I'm sure he's got highly skilled pilots manning those groups, but I still class it as a lucky hit, especially considering all the night raids he made in the DEI with no hits.

I guess I didn't really state it earlier. I've been targeting key fighters and engines as suggested to me awhile back. Since I haven't seen individual factory success at night (with that single test I ran), all night raids are still strikes on Manpower. The strategy is to make it progressively easier to strike strategic targets and ultimately to invade the Home Islands.

I threw in Light Industry figures because those seem to get hit in great numbers with Manpower strikes and LI was suggested as a means of going after supply production.

I also included Vehicle and Armament Assembly as they were the other items suggested.

� 579 AV on Chichi-jima. The troops will assault tomorrow with modest naval gunfire support (keeping most of the battleships ready for the Haha-jima landings). If not successful they will await the remaining Bde.

� B-29 target: Osaka/Kyoto, daylight, 12,000 ft.: Sam 31 + Sam 31; George 51 + George 47; Frank 51; Kikka 8; Ki-83 31. We will target 251 factory points with at least 228 bombers, but a few more might be ready by flight time. I'm going for near 1 to 1 on the Sam, George, and Frank factories, and a few on the Kikka and Ki-83 factories. The allocation worked out as follows.

There will be far fewer bombers closer to the carriers. 42 Corsair 1D and 63 Corsair 1A models will sweep the target, along with 150 Mustang D model. Recon shows 183 fighters on defense, but surrounding cities have at least 457 fighters on CAP.

� Haha-jima landings will be in 3 or 4 days.

I would have gone most manpower for the first big raid of this type...with perhaps a squadron on the 83, the Dinah if I planned on continuing the night bombing campaign.

If rather, I plan on combining carrier sweeps with daytime bombing then skip the dinah and you might be at that point.

PS: If you plan on primarily using daytime raids coordinated with sweeps, well then I would have chosen your targets, except I would allocate 1 squadron lower than the others to hit manpower.

The Manpower raids seem to damage light and heavy industry preferentially (although not entirely). Maybe that's only because of how much light and heavy industry there usually is. Given how much better Japan's pilot pool is in the game with a good player like Walter versus how poor it was IRL, I'm not sure how many good shots I will get. So many good fighter targets, I want to make sure those are what gets hit.

When I make night raids the target will be Manpower. But even for a daytime raid on Tokyo I was thinking about Manpower as the target. I changed my mind when I saw all the 'good' factories at Osaka/Kyoto.

The bombing should get easier as you progress.

1st hurdle getting bombers within range....check.

2nd hurdle getting fighters in range for lr sweeps... check.

3rd hurdle using deathstar for sweeps with coordinated daytime raids. check

4th hurdle getting close enough to use b24s, b17s etc and enlarging the threatened area stretching IJ fighters

5th hurdle savaging the IJ fighter pools...day or night and getting in unopposed bombing runs.

In groups recently arrived, I've got either 20 or 30 B-29's on the way to theater. I think there are another 50 arriving within a week, and a whole bunch more within a month or six weeks. I'm thinking after the Allies acquire Okinawa the one airfield there which can build to size 7 will expand B-29 capacity too.

� First the Corsairs swept in various groups, then the B-29's went in, one last group of Corsairs, and finally in the afternoon the P-51's went in. I think the Mustangs were grounded by weather in the morning.

� The B-29's got good hits on almost all targets as the recon comparison in a following post shows.

� The Corsairs are back on CAP and the fleet carriers are heading back to Chichi-jima.

� The P-51's are standing down for at least a day. Going forward I might try sweeping with 3 squadrons at a time, rotating squadrons and moving through a list of potential targets to just keep up pressure on defenses.

� B-29 target: Tokyo, Manpower, nighttime, 5,000 ft.

� Landings on Haha-jima in two days.

� Assault on Chichi-jima tomorrow.
