I am usually more than just a few years late on the tech curve. So please bear with me.

I am looking for some good advice on adding a monitor to my laptop. My laptop is very good for what I do. I mostly play turn based games like SC2, ootp and some guitar apps.I find as I get older my eyes are having a strain to see small stuff on the computer. It would be whole lot easier to see with a larger screen.
I was wondering if it possible to add a monitor to the set up and use that as the main screen to look at. If so what guidance could you give? My computer has hdmi and vga outputs. I did some looking around at some monitors and it seems a 24 in could be had for less than $175, Newegg has several Acer monitors 24in less than $150, which is completely doable. What guidelines should I look for and what specs would be Important to take note off.
I notice when have zoom meetings and I hook up my laptop to a 54 inch tv screen the registration is off. It doesn’t display the whole screen that is on the laptop Would that also be a problem with a monitor?

Thanks for sharing
Stu

if your not playing high end games, any LCD tv would be fine, just make sure the laptop see's the screen size and then most of the time it auto adjusts to the correct display and resolution and your fine.

HDMI cables are lighter and less expensive, and as new types of connections arise, such as DVI (digital video interface), HDMI cables can be “backward compatible” with adapters. HDMI cables are less susceptible to interference. VGA can only carry video signals, so you need another cable to transmit audio, HDMI on windows 10 will auto detect, where as VGA cables are hit and miss with auto detection, so imo always use HDMI or disport if laptop and monitor, but TV won't really matter

Both standards are capable of delivering a good gaming experience, but if you want a great gaming experience, right now DisplayPort 1.4 is generally better than HDMI 2.0, HDMI 2.1 technically beats DP 1.4, and DisplayPort 2.0 should trump HDMI 2.1. However, DisplayPort is still the preferred standard for PC monitors.

I noticed a similar problem when **connecting my XP Machine (2004 Dell PC) to a smart TV (34" screen) to play older games, like WITP.AE and Close Combat.

solution: It turned out that the adjustment was with the smart tv (samsung). There is a setting under the 'PICTURE' menu called 'Screen Fit' which corrected the problem (Picture Mode/Picture Size).

** I bought a 'VGA to HDMI Converter' about six years ago and it's still working great.
