CIRCUS 33

Target: Fives/Lille Steel and Engineering Works and the marshalling yard at Abbeville

Lille
Escort Wing – Kenley and Northolt
Cover Wing – Hornchurch
Target Support Wings – Biggin Hill & Tangmere
Rear Support Wing – 12 Group

Abbeville
Escort – Hornchurch & North Weald

15 Sqn (Wyton – Stirling I)

The main bombing tactics of the Squadron were altered today. We are now concentrating on daylight bombing in formation with a large fighter escort. S/L. Menaul led the formation with F/L. Gilmour and F/O. Thompson and attacked the FIVES-LILLE steel factory. About 5/10 obscured the target and in consequence the first run was a dummy run. On the second run however the target was well hit. F/O. Thompson with fighter escort attacked the marshalling yards at Abbeville, the beginning of his stick of bombs falling S.W. of the marshalling yards and the remainder straddling the railway line. Fairly intense A.A fire was encountered at LILLE but hardly any opposition at ABBEVILLE.

50 Sqn (Swindrby – Hampden)

11 aircraft detailed to bomb an aiming point at BREMEN and 4 aircraft to plant vegetables in the NECTARINE area.
Unfortunately one aircraft failed to return.
The route cut was via <unreadable> and thence direct to the target, a few aircraft approached the target from the North West.
Considerable ground haze and variable amounts of cloud prevented any aircraft identifying the primary target. Five aircraft succeeded in attacking the town of BREMEN. Of the remaining aircraft, one bombed CUXHAVEN, one bombed WILHELMSHAVEN, one NORDENEY aerodrome, one jettisoned its bombs 15 miles west of TEXEL owing to failure to climb. The last brought its bombs back to BASE owing to excessive exhaust flames from the starboard engine.
Considerable opposition was encountered over the target, one aircraft being hit in several places, the starboard engine also cutting. It eventually landed at LANGHAM.

ADDENDUM – Hampden AE185 was shot down by Oblt. Ludwig Becker at 0144 hours and crashed near Paterswolde. P/O H law and Sgt. PFB Orwin are buried in Haren General Cemetary. P/O EC Haskell, POW.

66 Sqn (Perranporth – Spitfire IIA) 20.8.41

Eight aircraft went to Coltishall led by F/Lt. Allen. 8 aircraft 130, 8 aircraft 152. The wing to be led by S/Ldr. Forbes.

S/Ldr. Forbes reports – “ I was leading the Squadron which was acting as high cover to six Blenheims. After some 20 to 30 miles from the coast I saw a Spitfire with a 109F on its tail at about 100 feet. I dived with my No.2 from 600 feet and followed the 109 which had broken off its attack and had turned south. I had great difficulty in catching up with the 109 and staying in position. Three two second bursts were fired and strikes observed. I then ran out of ammunition and broke away so that my No. 2 (Sgt. Green) could attack. Whilst he was attacking I covered his tail. After 3 or 4 bursts from Sgt. Green the 109 started to pour out black smoke which turned to white after a time. The 109 flew straight on for about half a mile and went into the sea nose first. I then turned towards England and followed by Sgt. Green returned to base.

P/O. Oliver reports – I was No.2 of starboard section of 66 Squadron (8 aircraft) high escort for Blenheims. Sections of four weaving in line astern. Due to a dive after a 109 I had plenty of speed and was able to climb and shoot while practically vertical at a 109 which commenced a head on dive. It turned way and my bullets entered its fuselage towards the tail……Damaged. Next burst at a passing 109 without sufficient deflection – missed. Another 109 attacked No. 1 of the section. F/Lt. Allen and myself head on. I was about 150 yards behind Allen and we both fired head on as the 109 turned to starboard our port, deflection shot. 109 continued on in the dive and shortly a lot of bluish smoke and oil started streaming out behind. Was unable to catch this E/A longer due to pressure from other E/A – probable. Enemy aircraft unusually aggressive.

607 Sqn (Hurricane IIA) moved to Martlesham Heath

First and Last Operational Missions

228 Sqn (Bathurst, Gambia) flew its last OM in the Sunderland I
