Working on an August 17 start to the RGW scenario. This allows the player to skip the tedious opening moves and puts you in charge just as Hitler started seriously interfering in operations by shifting units to and fro.

I'm looking for sources for who and what were where on Aug 17. These Lage Ost maps are great, but I have difficulty reading them and figuring out what everything means, especially on the Soviet side. Does anyone have any other source(s)?

Might have another source on Soviet units. Depends on the year. Early war information is missing a lot. Yeah, the Lage series of maps can frustrate at times. So much information, sometimes too hard to read on the digitally scanned versions.

Cheers

An August start - yes, please. I would not miss 15 turns of The Operational Art of Who Is Not Taking The Train Today.

This sounds pretty good. As the German or Soviet player you can only create order from chaos so many times before you just want to get down to the real fighting. Late August, September was the pivotal point where the campaign was decided. Best of success with this for you. Glantz has a lot of information on the Russians. Also the Eastern Front Research Forum on Facebook can be a trove of information.

The biggest problem with a June start is how the Soviet player is not restricted in his movements in every pbem East Front game/scenario. If they had to conduct the war as it had to be done historically it would be a different game instead of hide and seek. Or is that run and seek?

But in exchange for that, the German player is no longer restricted by Hitler changing their plans for the next 4+ years. Both sides have the benefit of the hindsight of history, like Jerry now planning for the first winter. The Soviets just get to use it first.

Very informative website and information you present. I was looking through it this weekend.

Steve, take a look at TOAW IV Road to Moscow, III Guderian (1-25 Aug 41), and VIII What if... (13 Aug- 14 Oct 41). 10km/hex Full-day Turns. Note that these are original versions in the shipped game and more recent versions have been submitted to the Development forum, awaiting the next update. However, most of the changes are relatively minor,

The Documents tabs have a few maps and a reasonably complete list of references, including invaluable ones by David Glantz.

Many thanks to Soren 'Doc' Gaun as well as other members of the FITE team,
Kristian 'Teufel' Kristensen
Stefan 'Snefens' Kristensen
For allowing elements of the OOB, TOE, and .eqp values of their scenario FITE to be incorporated in Road to Moscow Series.

Good idea, Steve.
