Congratulations on the rebirth of ARD Dewey! Quite a story in her career already. Long may she serve!

And also congratulations on your hits on enemy DDs. Even if they don't sink, they will be missing from the front for a long time when they are badly needed - all the better for your subs targeting bigger ships!

If you withdraw the air units, they should come back with the non-damaged planes for sure and maybe the damaged ones.

Will the air units still come back even if they are restricted?

I am not sure. With no withdrawl date, they should but I don't know for sure - especially if they are permanently restricted. Ask Lowpe on his AAR since he withdrew some and they came back at Aden. He has a list posted of some that came back. They only way would be to load up a game and test the withdrawls and see if they come back.

February 28/ March 01, 1942

Highlights:
Cocos Island devastated by surface bombardment.

Bases lost:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Lahat !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Djokjakarta !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Christmas Island IO !!!
Great Nicobar is occupied by the Japanese
Catanduanes is occupied by the Japanese

Ships lost:
Loss of xAKL Kini on Feb 28, 1942 is admitted, sunk by RO-67 near Port Moresby
Loss of xAK Empire Kohinoor on Mar 01, 1942 is admitted, sunk by CA Ashigara at Cocos Islands
Loss of xAK Industria on Mar 01, 1942 is admitted, sunk by CA Ashigara at Cocos Islands
Loss of xAP Poelau Telo on Mar 01, 1942 is admitted, sunk by BB Ise at Cocos Islands
Loss of xAKL Canopus on Mar 01, 1942 is admitted, sunk by RO-62 near Port Moresby

Ships sunk:
-

China:
Wenchow garrison might not be able to escape, too many enemy units moving to block LOCs and hexsides. Although forts are at 0, another Japanese attack has been bloodily repulsed while moving out of the hex into the woods. Too bad they are doomed, valiant troops which have gained good experience in the fighting.
Betties bomb troops at Paoshan - just harrassing or are the Japanese planning to take China through the back door?

Burma:
Almost empty of Allied troops, two lone rearguard Bns being bombed while withdrawing north near Ramree Island. I hope I can hold Bengal with the forces available.

PI:
Manila and Bataan heavily bombed again. More ground units and 14th Army HQ detected at Bataan. Base and units are out of supplies, it will fall quickly when the Japanese decide to attack.

DEI:
Palembang heavily bombed again. Destruction of Dutch resistance centers continues with the capture of Djokjakarta. Bandoeng and Malang still hold. At Medan, the enemy seems to have been stalled - only temporary for sure.

PNG:
Betties bomb and 4 CAs bombard PM again with little effect. Japanese deliberate attack held with heavy lossses inflicted on Japanese troops.

Australia:
Kure 3rd SNLF at Portland Roads bombed by B-17s, causing some disablements. Not sure if this landing is a diversion or harbinger of bigger things to come.

Homefront:
Convoy system starts to fall in place. In the PO, 1100-tons-AKs and 1800tons-TKs supply Alaska and Aleutians from Seattle. 2100-tons-AKs and 6650tons-TKs go back and forth between SF and PH. 12-knot AKs of the 3200-3500tons types and 9400tons-TKs commute between San Diego and Wellington, with Tahiti as MOFP (mid-ocean fueling point). Slow AOs keep Tahiti fueled from PH. Large TKs and fast AOs keep Wellington fueled from LA - I hope, since the major part of the USN is starting to arrive at New Zealand. Anything faster than 12knots is reserved for moving troops and airgroups.
In the IO, the large AKs of the 3k/4k range are hauling supplies from England to Capetown where the mass of 2800tons / 2600tons AKs take over for distribution to Bombay resp. Perth. Small and medium TKs keep India and Aden supplied with fuel, the big TKs do the long run from Abadan to Perth and Capetown via Diego Garcia. The latter is being garrisoned by two Indian brigades plus CD guns. Assorted base forces evacuated from Malaya and remnants of the Dutch flying boats have started to arrive via Cocos Islands.

TB Kasasagi is reported to have been sunk near Cocos Islands on Mar 02, 1942
xAK Florida Maru is reported to have been sunk near Tsushima on Mar 02, 1942 by SS Gato
xAP Shanghai Maru is reported to have been sunk near Port Moresby on Mar 02, 1942 by SS S-38

China:
Ground forces still trying to extricate themselves from Wenchow under bombs and bombardements.
Japanese Ships Bombarding Wenchow - fires causing damage to Light Industry at Wenchow!
The string of 5 subs patrolling between Shanghai and Wenchow had no luck - just ASW attacks.

Burma:
Two lone garrison Bns still struggling north in the direction of Akyab under a hail of bombs, pursued by enemy ground forces.

PI:
Usual enemy bombings of Manila and Bataan.

DEI:
Japanese ships bombarding Cocos Islands. Usual bombings of Palembang, Bandoeng, Malang.
With Mini-KB detected south of Cocos Is. sinking the evacuation transports and bombing Cocos Is., I have tried to surprise it with a small CAG build around CV Indomitable. Didn't work, Mini-KB has been reinforced by CV Soryu - scratch one British flattop plus supporting ships. Part of the CAGs screen had been detached to try and catch Mini-KB in a full-speed night dash - didn't work either, but the SAG stumbled across two TBs, sinking them, before retiring south towards Perth.

PNG:
With 44k supplies available at PM I decided to spawn the available PTs at that base to stop the Japanese bombardment runs - two groups of nine and one group of 5 PTs. Didn't work, CL Tama and two DDs sank 16 PTs with no damage in return. The string of subs positioned between PM to Milne Bay scored three hits, not on the enemy SAG but on xAP Shanghai Maru. The Japanese continue to bring-in reinforcements, I'm hesitant to add more ground troops I will have great difficulties to resupply. Most US fleet subs are migrating from the Manila supply runs to help shipping supplies to PM.

Australia:
Enemy subs are active off Perth, ASW assets are in short supply - and a bunch of tanker convoys and two brigades of the Aus 7th Division are inbound. Will try to route them around known sub positions.
Warspite sortied to try another bombardment of Norfolk Is., preceeded by a DMS sweep. The DMS dispatched a lone PB and found no mines at Norfolk - but enemy air-launched torpedoes found Warspite. Looks like at least one enemy CV is operating north of Norfolk Is. just out of Allied air search range. Will try to build a small base at Lord Howe Island to put Norfolk under better observation.

Homefront:
Lots of convoys at sea with troops, supplies and fuel from CONUS bound for Australia with minimum or no warship protection routed via Tahiti - Wellington - fingers crossed enemy subs or raiders won't catch the scent. 4 US CVs are at Wellington, but Lady Lex and Sara are due for upgrades in March, will probably send them to Melbourne, with their air groups put ashore to provide cover. The provisional USA fighter units in Australia must be disbanded on March 15, I am thinning-out the fighter cover on New Zealand to dispatch fighters to Oz. Pilots still pretty raw.

China:
Wenchow bombarded again, two subs trying to intercept in vain damaged by ASW attacks. Amazingly, a Japanese deliberate attack has been fended-off again.

Burma:
Only Rearguard actions.

PI:
The defenders of Bataan - outnumbered and out of supplies - are crushed easily by the first Japanese deliberate attack.

DEI:
6th KNIL Regiment SURRENDERS and 2nd KNIL Regiment wiped out by attrition at Malang - only Bandoeng remains in Dutchhands on Java.
HMS Vendetta, only survivor of the carrier debacle last turn, evades multiple carrier air attacks.

PNG:
The weak elements of the NG Vol Rifles Battalion at Wau are being evacuated by air, enemy units are approaching.

Homefront:
Not sure whether Tahiti qualifies as "homefront" anymore - apparently the Japanese have already picked-up the scent! I-124 has laid mines and missed shipping with torps. Will shift the refueling point and rerout the convoys - afraid that KB comes calling.

China:
Just enemy bombing attacks against ground forces.

Burma:
The last two garrison Bn still in-country are fighting rear-guard actions in the jungles around Katha.

PI:
Bombing attacks on Manila and Cebu.

DEI:
Bandoeng and Palembang heavily bombed. 4 x PBY-4 Catalina transporting Marinier Battalion from Cocos Islands to Port Hedland - the last remaining unit on Cocos Is. is leaving. A few Commonwealth air units, the 224th Air Group HQ and four Dutch base forces have been saved from certain destruction - for the price of a bunch of xAKLs and a British CV.

PNG:
Japanese convoy reached PM, sub attacks ineffective with several subs damaged by ASW in shallow waters, coastal guns causing slight damage, B-17s ineffective. Enemy reinforcements identified as elements of IJA 14th Division. Issue is in doubt. Only B-17s can reach PM from OZ, have moved expendable Army dive bombers to Port Moresby - they are due to withdraw soon anyway. Am hesitant to commit surface and carrier assets in the defence of PM - it is outside LBA fighter cover, inside Nettie and Zero range from Rabaul, the whereabout of Main-KB is unknown, USN AA is still weak and carrier air not up-to-strength, still flying Buffaloes, Mark-3 and -3A Wildcats, SBD2s and TBDs...

Australia:
With the Aus 6th Division having arrived as reserve, one US Inf Rgt and one US Tank Bn have been tasked to advance north to Portland Roads to investigate the Japanese landings.

New Zealand:
TF 345 shadowed by Japanese Float Plane at 115,182 near Waipapakauri
B-17E Fortress reports periscope at 115, 182 near Waipapakauri
Hudson III (LR) reports possible submarine at 115, 182 near Waipapakauri
> Enemy subs on the hunt for wounded Warspite - which is repairing at size 1 port Waipapakauri with 24 sys and 50(34) float damage, protected by CAP and ASW-TF.

Homefront:
2/6th Armoured Regiment's TOE was upgraded to Aus 42 Armoured Regiment at Sydney
2/10th Armoured Regiment's TOE was upgraded to Aus 42 Armoured Regiment at Sydney
> Nice, but where are the tanks to flesh them out?

Ominato port can get pretty clogged with all the resource shipping coming from Sakhalin and Hokkaido. Sendai is a little further SW but it has good potential for expansion. It is also a good port to support invasion shipping to the Aleutians.

March 10/11, 1942

Highlights: PM dive bombing surprise fails

Bases lost:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Muntok !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Stewart Island !!!
Pucheng is occupied by the Japanese
Russell Islands is occupied by the Japanese

Ships lost:
none (!)

Ships sunk:
PB Ginyo Maru is reported to have been sunk near Norfolk Island on Mar 11, 1942

China:
My troops at Wenchow failed to break-out, an enemy unit marching in the opposite direction was faster and closed the last open hexside when my stack had - 2 miles to go to leave Wenchow. The only unit in the vicinity that could come to the rescue is a Construction Rgt - but it has to march two hexes through wooded terrain without roads.

India:
TF 475 detected by Japanese Aircraft at 38,5 near Karachi - surely a Glen-equipped sub lurking. I don't have enough escorts so only troopships and tankers have the luxury of some ASW protection.

Burma:
Upper Burma BAF Battalion SURRENDERS near Katha - now only one lone Bn left at Mykyina, fleeing in the direction of Ledo.

PI:
Enemy troops enter Manila.

DEI:
Enemy troops enter Palembang.

PNG:
Japanese ships bombarding Port Moresby - damaging most of the Banshees flown-in the turn before. The undamaged planes do attack but Zeros are on LRCAP, shoot down a bunch and spoil the aim of the handful survivors. So much for that - the air groups are set to withdraw in a few days.

Australia:
Ki-46-II Dinah sighted over Derby
Japanese Aircraft sighted over Broome
> both bases are empty and for the taking, I don't have the strength to fight for Northern Oz, but will try to hold at Tennant Creek

Allied Ships Bombarding Norfolk Island, sinkibng a PB in the process.

New Zealand:
TF 345 observes Japanese Recon at 115,182 near Waipapakauri
Vincent I reports oil slick at 115, 182 near Waipapakauri
Hudson III (LR) reports shape below surface at 115, 177 near Waipapakauri
DDs on ASW damage an I-Boat
> all this shows the Japanese know where wounded Warspite is hidding - worst case would be a visit by KB, I'll move her as soon as possible and will clear shipping around Auckland just in case

Homefront:
CV Hornet arrives at Balboa - flying Helldiver DBs, but the old biplane version
CV Lexington taken out of commission to begin refit at Melbourne
CV Saratoga taken out of commission to begin refit at Melbourne
Would be a bad time for a port strike by KB, but I have offloaded the airgroups to fly CAP over Melbourne. In fact, Yorktown and Enterprise are at Melbourne as well, and most of the US fleet is scheduled to arrive down under soon, just in case the Japanese plan major ops on Australian soil.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Batoe-eilanden !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Woodlark Island !!!
Rennell Island is occupied by the Japanese
Panggoe is occupied by the Japanese

Bases liberated:
Sampit is occupied by Dutch remnants - having marched through half of Borneo to arrive too late at the coast opposite Java to be evacuated by flying boat

Ships lost:
Loss of PC Kybra on Mar 12, 1942 is admitted

Ships sunk:
-

CBI:
Sian expands fortifications to size 5
Usual bombing and bombardment attacks at Wenchow
TF 468 followed by E14Y1 Glen at 40,8 near Karachi - sub is still lurking
Japanese Aircraft sighted over Chittagong - next target after Burma?
Swordfish I reports conning tower at 11, 73 near Diego Garcia > CVL Hermes is on ASW patrol, covering the movement of troop convoys and tankers from the Middle East to Oz

SRA:
Usual bombardments at Medan and Bandoeng, bombing of Manila and Palembang.
SS KXVI sights a TF including Hyuga, Ise, Kuma plus DDs and DMS leaving Sunda Strait and heading into the IO - probablyat Bandoeng and Medan, bombing another bombardment of Cocos Is.
Meanwhile PBY-4 Catalina are transporting Marinier Battalion from Cocos Islands to Port Hedland.
However, PBY-4 Catalina transports flying to Cocos Islands are intercepted - must be carrier CAP, guess will have to leave the rest of the Dutchmen behind for Ise and Hyuga, cannot afford PBY losses.

SWPac:
AMs find and clear mines in the coastal hexes just north of Perth.
Wirraway reports submarine wake at 49, 146 near Perth.
I-18 attacks an ASW patrol off Perth and sinks PC Kybra.

Near Woodlark Island, SS Gudgeon finds a working torpedo for CA Kinugasa returning from PM to Rabaul.
About 20 fleet subs start supply runs to PM.

The Japanese seem to be very curious about Tahiti:
TF 32 observes E14Y1 Glen at 173,178 near Tahiti
TF 285 observes Japanese Float Fighter at 173,178 near Tahiti
TF 311 followed by Japanese Torpedo Bomber at 173,178 near Tahiti - smells like KB!
Task Force 194 lays defensive minefield at Tahiti, just in case they become too curious.
All TFs not needing to refuel at Tahiti are ordered to give it a wide berth.
Only one PBY unit available for search, only 50 P-40Es for CAP.
H6K4 Mavis sighted over Waipapakauri, keeping Warspite under observation.
Marines belonging to the 2nd Div start migrating from Pago-Pago to Suva in small convoys

CentPac:
A lone USN sub patrolling around Truk, finding nothing so far. Five other subs patrol around Taiwan, the East China Sea, off Wenchow - without much luck.

NoPac:
Slowly building-up Dutch Harbor and Adak with minimum forces, no indications that the Japanese are interested in this area. A handful of subs based at Kodiak are patrolling around Sakhalin and Hokkaido, mostly attracting ASW attacks but attacking the odd xAKL or TK now and then.

Homefront / Rear areas:
USA ports empty of shipping, everything except local MSW is at sea, mostly heading for Oz.

Intel:
68th Ind.Infantry Battalion is planning for an attack on Kwangchowan
Previous report of sinking of SS I-18 incorrect. Ship sighted and engaged at 48, 145

Not much happening but digging and training. Indian Divisions busy upgrading to 1942 Infantry squads - I have disbanded one brigade-sized unit arriving with 1942 Inf Squads in order to boost the pools and to be able to upgrade A/B/C elements of split divisions in turn.

SRA:
Cocos Island bombarded, invaded and taken easily by elements of the IJA Guards Division.
Stay-behind Kingfisher float planes operating from Zamboanga damage a passing transport at Jolo - guess this will invite a Japanese reply.

Ships lost:
Off Perth, sunk by Mini-KB:
AMC Cornwallis sinks....
TK Manvantara sinks....
TK British Destiny sinks....
xAP Diomed sinks....
xAP Koolinda sinks....
xAP Mungana sinks....

At Port Moresby by SAG actions:
Loss of PT-61 on Mar 24, 1942 is admitted
Loss of PT-21 on Mar 25, 1942 is admitted
Loss of PT-24 on Mar 25, 1942 is admitted

Loss of PT-46 on Mar 25, 1942 is admitted
Loss of MTB 12 on Mar 25, 1942 is admitted
Loss of xAKL Mulubinda on Mar 24, 1942 is admitted

Ships sunk:
DMS W-3 is reported to have been sunk near Port Moresby on Mar 25, 1942

CBI:
TF 340 snooped by Japanese Float Plane at 36,5 near Karachi - damned sub is still eluding my air search and ASW patrols. Lots of digging and training going on and although upgraded to 42 infantry, Indian infantry units remain woefully understrength.

Japanese SRA:
Usual bombings and bombardments of the hold-outs.
Pamekasan - the island of Soerabaya - has been invaded with battleship support - slight case of overkill.

Western Ajustralia:
Mini-KB moved south from Exmouth outside air search range as I found out the hard way. Although I have started evacuating shipping from the Perth area and rerouting Oz-bound convoys from Cape Town and Abadan to go to Melbourne instead of Perth as soon as Mini-KB made its presence in the IO felt, some convoys are still within Mini-KBs wide reach. Actually Mini-KB managed to stumble right into the middle of a convoy at night. From four different convoys two out of five TKs and three out of 12 APs have been sunk, plus an escorting "AMC" Q-Ship. Luckily Mini-KB gave Perth itself a wide berth - the precious ARD are slowly being towed away to the East to hide at Esperance.

SWPac:
Lord Howe Island expands airfield to size 1.
PM is being reinforced again by the Japanese, another brigade of the 14th Division arriving. The covering forces sink most of the interferring PTs, but a few PTs manage to reach the convoy to sink an DMS and damage a CM. B-26 with pilots trained in naval bombing (70s-60s) make their combat debut but hit nothing and loose three of their numbers to Zeros and AA.

SoPac:
The usual enemy subs lurking around Tahiti.

CentPac:
Still belongs to the Japanese.

NoPac:
DM Breese lays defensive minefield at Kodiak ( 181 , 42) and sets course for Pearl Harbor

Intel:
Previous report of sinking of SS I-158 incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
Coastwatcher sighting: 1 Japanese ship at 111,135 near Vangunu , Speed 24 , Moving Southeast - too fast for a sub or AMC or merchies - some warship on an urgent mission?

Japanese forces CAPTURE Pamekasan !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Obi !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Epi !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Vangunu !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Terempa !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Tassafaronga !!!
Myitkyina is occupied by the Japanese
Aitape is occupied by the Japanese

Bases liberated:

Ships lost:
Loss of xAK William R. Gibson on Mar 26, 1942 is admitted, sunk by I-16 near Ta'u at 151,161
Loss of MTB 26 on Mar 26, 1942 is admitted, sunk by DD Isonami off PM
Loss of MTB 7 on Mar 27, 1942 is admitted, sunk by DD Usugumooff PM
xAP Lycaon sunk by Mini-KB south of Perth - after damaging 6 Vals all by herself

Ships sunk:
-

CBI:
Wuchow expands fortifications to size 4.

SRA:
Medan garrison finally succumbs after weeks of suffering bombardements. Usual bombings and bombardements at Manila, Palembang, Bandoeng.

Western Australia:
Mini-KB moves further south, sinking an AP SSE of Perth which had been damaged the day before and split-off as sacrifical lamb. The main convoy escaped notice and might make it to safety if Mini-KB doen't move even further south - hope fuel and sorties count will force Mini-KB to RTB.

SWPac:
PM bombarded by IJN cruisers, more reinforcements landing. Remaining few PTs sunk in the process. Major elements of the USN have been moving up to Townsville for operations against PM but spent too many ops points refueling to be sent out this turn.

SoPac:
KB sighted a few hexes north of Raoul Island by tender-based PBYs operating from that island. Either going for Warspite at New Zealand of convoy raiding around New Zealand - all ships in the wider area are of course ordered out or into hiding.
Penrhyn Island expands airfield to size 1 - replacing Canton Is. under Japanese occupation as stepping stone for future bomber transfers from PH to Oz
Tahiti expands airfield to size 4

CentPac:
A USN bombarment force from Pago-Pago heading for Canton Is. is intercepted by a handful bomb-carrying Nells which fail to score. A sub guarding Canton fails as well, the bombardment can be rated as effective. The TF will retire to PH for rearming and repairs.

NoPac:
All cruisers and destroyers assigned to this area have assembled at Bremerton for the April upgrades.

Homefront / Rear areas:
Enough PPs assembled to buy-out the first third of the 27th US Inf Division for SWPac

Intel:
Combined Fleet is located at Truk

CBI:
Calm.

SRA:
The usual bombings and bombardements, plus another BB bombardment of Manila.

Western Australia:
Carnarvon invaded.

SWPac:
The Allied Navies launch a major effort to support the besieged garrison of PM. Led by a TF made up of British and New Zealand CLs, followed by four USN TFs of CLs, CAs and 2x BBs plus escorting DDs. Nells and Japanese subs try to intervene but manage only one torpedo hit. However, the bombardment results are disappointing despite prior recon flights and night air recon in each TF. For some reason, the CA group never made it to PM. Unimpressed by the bombardments, the Japanese launched two deliberate ground attacks with scary results, reducing forts from 3 to 1. The smaller Aussie units having been in reserve mode, I expected them to switch to combat mode to join the fight - but they did not - normal? Anyway, the issue is now seriously in doubt. The fleet will retire to Oz and now probably face the interesting prospect of encountering KB barrelling up from Raoul Island.
Oh, and Lae expands airfield to size 2.

SoPac:
KB disappears.
I-19 misses PG Charleston on ASW patril with six torpedos one hex NE of Tahiti.

I think that it is normal for the Reserve mode units not to come out of reserve mode if the attacker can not take the base.

March 30/31, 1942

Highlights: KB still hovering off Raoul Island

Bases lost:
Siargao is occupied by the Japanese
Warazup is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Lakatoro !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Nookanbah !!!

Bases liberated:
-

Ships lost:
-

Ships sunk:
-

CBI:
Northern Combat Area Command HQ has arrived at Tsuyung and will be airlifted to Ledo to provide support for the few unrestricted Chineses units which have or will be flown to the fleshpots of India.

SRA:
Japanese Ships Bombarding enemy troops at Bandjermasin - Dutch remnants from Balikpapan coming out of the jungles of Borneo

Western Australia:
Japanese Ships Bombarding Carnarvon. The base will fall at the first attack, the only defenders are the weakened remnants of the Dutch Marines Bn which have been air-evaced from Cocos Island. Don't know why Ed is waiting to launch a ground attack.

SWPac:
The fleet makes a clean escape from PM to Townsville and the ships due to upgrade in April will now try to return to the shipyards in Southern Oz under cover of LBA fighters.

SoPac:
The beginning of the turn showed KB again sitting a few hexes north of Raoul Island. Not sure what to think about the sighting reports:
PBY-5 Catalina sighting report: 7 Japanese ships at 130,178 near Raoul Island , Speed 18 , Moving Northwest - that is south of Raoul Island
PBY-5 Catalina sighting report: 10 Japanese ships at 124,172 near Raoul Island , Speed 11 , Moving Northwest - that is north of Raoul Island
PBY-5 Catalina sighting report: 10 Japanese ships at 145,158 near Savaii, speed 19, Moving East - that would be a move at warp speed
I think KB made a night dash into the waters south of Raoul Island, but did not linger long and was picked up by the Cats on the way back up north, again passing by Raoul ISland. At least that is what I am hoping for, since I still have numerous convoys at sea between Wellington and Tahiti which try to leave the danger zone.
