January 17 - 31 1941 Bulgaria joined the Axis. The USSR reacted to Axis successes in the Middle East (50%). Alexandria was captured and Turkey swings towards the Axis (58%). A couple of British tanks corps will not stop for long the Axis forces and the decision was taken (it took me a while...) to continue the retreat east towards Baghdad, abandoning Mt Sinai and a newly built fortification. Clearly, as the Italians won’t be able to capture Greece, they made a call to their Axis partners. From Bulgaria, the Germans and satellites approached in force Thesaloniki with 1 panzerkorps and 2 Armies infantry level 2. DimitryN has been so far very lucky with the weather, getting only sunny turns in the whole Mediterranean during the last 3 turns of winter weather, using the Luftwaffe to the fullest with devastating effects. The skies turned gray with rain but we managed to transfer the 2 Greek Armies from Thesaloniki to Athens safely: a great last minute escape! After many months at sea including the crossing of the Cape of Good Hope, General Lord Gort disembarked from England at Basra. His new orders: to train the 3 Malayan Infantry corps newly arrived to Iraq. Additional Indian reinforcements are expected to arrive in the near future, the Indian paras already being in the area. More RAF units continue to arrive to the Middle East (total of 3 fighter, 2 tac, 1 strategic bomber and 1 naval bomber) but some need rest and refit.
