After setting up naval search from the Yorktown, turn 12, I see that the search arcs are shown in black, blue and green? What's the significance?

Blue and green sectors indicate search arcs flown in either AM or PM air mission segments. Black sectors are where the 2 overlap (search arcs flown during both AM and PM).

Its probably not a good idea to set search from a vessel that moves. Better to set them up from land bases.

From ships, I always place Search/ASW arcs at 360.

Yeah but with 18 Devastators why not do a 180degree forward search?

Are you absolutely sure that your enemy hasn't moved past your TF?

No, but the first 4 hexes is automatically 360 anyway so there is some safety built it. Hell, I just had a sub get by 5 DDs with 4 of them being 8 ASW to put a torpedo into the Houston so nothing is completely safe!

IIRC, Devastators only have a range of 5 anyway, so it is not worth diddling with arcs for one extra hex. The Glen aircraft only have a range of four so a sub five hexes away is unlikely to find your TF unless enemy patrol aircraft locate it for them.

Probably not, but you never know when one hex might make the difference, Strawberry 5 at Midway at the end of its range for example.
Besides, I just like the way they look on the map:)
