If you ever wanted to try it, and I have, Epic Games has it free until 10/7

I tried to get into that game several times and still didnt like it. Since the beginning, there were so many weird things going on and most of it didnt make much sense. Over the years, been hearing some veteran players saying that they manage to ruin that game and need to watchout what DLCs to buy, infact they arent cheap. Of course you can disable those DLCs you have bought, idk did they test every possibilities in that game? I mean with patches, DLCs, etc. Feel the same thing that happen to Stellaris too!

Anyway i would rather play Sid's Civilization: Colonization over that game

The latest DLC, Leviathan, and the "free patch" accompanying it totally broke the game (just one example: when you try to colonise the "New World" you discover that the natives are already so advanced that they kick you back all the way to Europe). Also, the bug list is mindblowing.

To Paradox's credit, they took a breath and decided to slow the production of new content until a great number of the outstanding (in the literal sense of the word ) bugs are fixed, while also working on the balance of the game and the AI. The latest Developer's Diary promises the moon about this issues. We will see.

It must be said, however, that the game is now too bloated and collapsing under its own weight. I have 600+ hours on Steam and all the DLCs (I'm a compulsive completist) and there are things I still haven't a clue what they are about. In comparison, Crusader Kings II is, possibly, as richer in content, but it doesn't forces you to learn everything. You don't need to know how Satanism works unless you decide to secretly embrace it. The social and religious practices in the Scandinavian region are replicated in a very interesting way, but you need to bother about them only if you are from that region. And so on.

Actually, half of the fun of learning CKII comes from the fact that you can imagine to be someone tasked to rule a fief - and you don't have a clue about how to do it. Chaos and very funny situations ensue. EU4 asks you to have a degree in political sciences up start or you will literally not understand what happens when you do something, and why. The Wiki helps but, by now, too much of the game looks like work.

A good opportunity for someone to try it for nothing.

But then you can try Command Ops 2 for free - you get 3 scenarios included with the base game.

--

If you like the older Europa Universalis games try FTG - For The Glory - a sort of EU 2.5.
---

Anyway, I've just bought Empire In Arms to add to my collection of huge games like War In The East 2 and War In The Pacific that I will never get round to playing.

To be honest, I preferred EU 1, due to its more historical flavor.

It got more sandbox like over the years. Which is fine I suppose.

I got EU3 Complete for free sometime ago. It was a surprise as it just showed up in my Steam account. CKII back in 2018. Barely touched them though.

My favorite EU game was For the Glory, which was a highly modded version of EU II. It is still available on Steam, btw, for $9.99. I liked it much better than EU III or IV and played it much more than any of the others. I gave up on IV after getting a package of I think three DLCs and trying it. It just never caught my interest, though I knew many people love it.

From what I remember pre-EU'3 version game play was very restricted in my Golden Horde game. Events were very deterministic like a history book. Doesn't matter how you play. Paradox understood it and make it a bit more sandbox, EU'3 with mod Death and Taxes was good. I don't compare EU series with Civilization or colonization because faction in those games more about cosmetic. In Eu'3 playing Portugal or Ottoman gameplay was very different.

I don't see it that way. What is the opinion based on?

They've been experimenting with some sort of subscription system for a year or two now. You pay a dollar or two per month, and you get all DLCs activated. I've bought most of the DLC from sales.
