sending in cruisers to Rabaul is always at risk running right into KB as the small invasion force can be used as a bait and I've done that as the Japanese more than once... and KB was spotted today but Mundy didn't time his invasion with KB, he might not have expected us to show up... after hitting Pearl and repleneshing KB has arrived in the Bismarck Sea today...

I think that you meant that you spotted a Japanese convoy.

Yes, you are having lousy luck with your subs.

Balikpapan invaded... we spotted the invasion force only yesterday and immediately ordered Force Z to leave Soerabaja to intercept but that means of course we will be one day late again if we aim at engaging loaded troop convoys... no doubt the enemy will unload everything today... and there are some heavy units there to cover the invasion... there's also a CVL plus perhaps a CVE in the area but the Kates have spent the limited number of torps on some tiny freighters so the CVL shouldn't be a threat to Force Z...

KB swings around the tip of New Guinea and even though every ship in the area was ordered to get out as quickly as possible some small convoys just weren't fast enough to avoid the incoming Japanese danger... losing this small xAP is a pity because it carried a NZ construction unit with 12 engineers and 3 eng vehicles which are so precious at this stage...

god damn, must have been hit by the synch bug already as the units here attack already so they must have unloaded YESTERDAY already?!?! Wow, what a sh*t... watching the replay I must have been looking at a different reality...

what's also more than surprising is what Mundy is landing here as two full IJA divisions attack at Balikpapan, which is total overkill for this base... combined some 70 or 80 oil/fuel were destroyed... Mundy as the Japanese is watching what really happens so he's up to date so that could lead to a problem with my orders... Force Z is going in tomorrow...

the Celebes Sea is a death zone for IJ ships as we have around a dozen subs with working torps patrolling there... first valuable victim is CVL Ryujo that is hit by two torps... the light carrier is reported hit but it's not sunk yet, there were no aircraft ground losses... the ship has to get to a friendly port for emergency repairs now though, most likely Balikpapan (lvl 4) and we will try to intercept...

here's today's real party as Force Z shows up at Balikpapan to engage the IJN... both IJ BBS expended parts of their ammo during the invasion already but they still fired lots of main gun rounds on our ships... both POW and Repulse were hit by 36cm shells but none were penetrating their armor, light cruiser Durban wasn't as lucky when a 36cm shell penetrated her deck armor causing heavy damage... in return our ships landed 14 and 15inch hits on Kitakami and one 15inch shell also penetrated Mutsu's deck armor at very long range after several shells earlier failed to penetrate... now one such shell usually isn't causing spectacular damage but this engagement lasted like forever and Mutsu was burning from 6inch shells right from the beginning and if a ship is burning during the actual combat replay these fires are devastating if the ship is also hit by penetrating shells...

Mutsu was going down later this day and there was only one 15inch shell going through her armor... I never understood why fires are so much more dangerous during the actual replay when the ship would have easily survived the same damage if the combat replay would have been over quicker... a CVL hit by two torps and a BB being sunk, not bad for Dec 23... CL Durban was split off and tries to make Soerabaja which should be doable if no further attacks occur, Force Z is also going to retire to Soerabaja...

the two Petes destroyed on the ground are the confirmation that BB Mutsu didn't survive the fight against Force Z... Kitakami might be sunk too but she doesn't carry any floatplanes...

Congrats on nailing a BB already!

I expect KB is not headed for Darwin, but will position south of Java and strike at Force Z. Better send Force Z down the west side of Oz to Sydney before KB can intercept.

Yes, KB is for sure not going for Darwin but passing it to the NW but all shipping in the area is in danger of course. Force Z stays at Soerabaja for the moment, we have 200 fighters in the area, including 75 P-40. KB is a huge threat but you also don't want to face that number of Allied fighters on CAP, this would shred KB's offensive capabilities pretty quickly. And Soerabaja is the only level 7 port in the area, only Singapore can support BBs too but that place is a no go area for Force Z. Guess I've got three or four days until KB is in a position to strike, depending if the carriers need to replenish fuel or not.

I really prove to be stupid but I get away with it... forgot to set my fighters to fly CAP and had all of them still on training... wow, these things still happen... one Dutch squadron is shot to pieces as it is caught by the Zeroes... the bombers are coming from Balikpapan and there's no air HQ so the threat to BBs is minimal when the Betties carry bombs...

seeing three torps hitting Repulse made me think she would be a loss, most likely not instantly but without having a chance to ever get out of Soerabaja again... then looking at the damage I'm confident we might get her out of Java and back to Cape Town which is the next available shipyard big enough for her... expected way more major damage, she's stood down to patch her up and get her back to 12 knots mission speed so she can move at three hexes per movement phase... that means we will have all availabe fighters cover Soerabaja the coming three weeks...

within a moment a big Allied victory nearly turned into a draw...

I guess it all depends on how much/how long he commits KB to her destruction.

I welcome any enemy to use his carriers vs bases, this usually only bleeds them dry and I'm absolutely positive I could do that as the Allied in Dec 41 like I can do it as the Japanese in early 45. As the Japanese I would never risk my offensive air arm for an operation like this.

He doesn't have to use KB's fighters - he can take bases nearby and grind down Soerabaja's airfield using LBA. After it is shut down, even mini KB could demolish Force Z. Soerabaja is a trap for the Allies in 1942. Always has been.

Action aplenty!

You could withdraw the rest of Force Z now and just leave a few DDs behind to escort Repulse later.
He'll probably swarm subs to cover the Sunda and Bali Straits...

yes he can, but this takes time. It's nothing he can do within no time and I've never said I will leave Force Z at Soerabaja until early 43. For now, he has nothing on hand I'm really afraid of. Even if he wants to bombard Soerabaja, I'm fine with a bombardment group coming in fighting it out with Force Z and 200 fighters above flying CAP.

He has to fight at Singapore, Luzon and he doesn't have air superiority all over the SRA yet, so he is far away from taking bases around Soerabaja and if he does, it won't be cheap. I've always been playing a Sir Robin to some kind, as I want to limit losses, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to counterstrike. I'm just not doing it at all cost. And with the appearance of Force Z at Balikpapan and the fight vs his BBs I guess Mundy is aware of this.

Action aplenty!

You could withdraw the rest of Force Z now and just leave a few DDs behind to escort Repulse later.
He'll probably swarm subs to cover the Sunda and Bali Straits...

No need to run yet. I see Force Z as more of a threat to the Japanese at the moment than the other way around. Of course, an air HQ at the right place with 150 Zeroes and the same number of Betties can change this but that would be pretty much all the Japanese have and then they don't have a big enough airfield yet to threaten Java. We're at the start of the war and the Japanese lack a lot of things.

that's the force we have dislodged from Cabanatuan (East of Clark) before and Mundy dares to move them in again with even smaller combat strength... was thinking long about moving 1000 av out of Clark again which would take two or max three days in, one day of battle and two or three days back but due to the fact that recon shows no less than 69!! enemy units moving onto Clark from the North we have decided against it... we will try to bleed the enemy dry at Clark when they have to assault our fortified position in a jungle rough hex... we will have over 2100 av ready there plus literally every artillery barrel on the Philipines...

edit: I just realized this didn't happen yet lol... we only kicked them out of that base in the next combat report... I'm way too far ahead in the game compared to the AAR...

we have daily spotted KB the last couple of days passing Darwin moving further towards Java which is about what everyone was expecting already so we have ramped up fighter defense over Soerabaja to cover the port and Force Z there... there was only KB incoming and no SAG so we kept most of Force Z disbanded in port with only a couple of light cruisers and destroyers in a combat group in the hex and KB launched a rather small strike during the morning...

first thing I've noticed was the number of Warhawks and I just thought WTF? that's only 1/3 of the Warhawks I have there to fly CAP so where's the rest? Easily explained, two squadrons of P-40E were sitting idle at the airfield and only the P-40B was set to fly CAP 90%... cool... I'm so used to my streamlined Japanese production that I didn't set all of those different types of fighters at Soerabaja to fly CAP and it must have been like P-40B 90% CAP -> set ALL P-40B when I didn't realize I had -B and -E types there... silly me...

so the incoming strike of 92 Japanese aircraft faced a CAP of 116 fighters when it should have been around 150, but still, 100+ fighters against 45 Zero escorts is a nice ratio considering they were undergoing three weeks of training already which increased their air skills quite nicely... needless to say the Zero pilots totally outclassed our fighters and while doing a good job they were just way too few to keep our fighters from mauling the bombers... about halve of the bombers were downed before reaching our ships, the bombers then targetted mostly small naval vessels and completely ignored the three light cruisers and most of the destroyers... after having lost three vessels our fighters downed most of the rest of the bombers...

that was a severe blow to KB, losing dozens of highly skilled bomber crews, pretty much all of them irreplacable as there will only be trained pilots at 70 skill but not godlike ones like KB's starting crews...

seriously doubt Mundy was happy about KB's losses today and even though the Zeroes got a 4:1 vs our fighters (actually not all that impressing for KB's fighter pilots) we get a 3:1 in total kills today, downing 50+ of KB's bombers... quite a loss for literally no result and tomorrow also the P-40E will be airborne but I doubt Mundy will launch another strike... to make up for the fighter losses today we have moved in three dozen additional fighters...

we will also have all of Force Z (except the damaged Repuls of course) guarding Soerabaja's base if he decides to send in some surface forces...

note that the Japanese took the lead in air losses on Jan 1, 1942

Don't know what happened to KB's strike. The aircraft numbers attacking are far below the 300+ that should have been sent. Perhaps he split off some carriers already?

The KB did not send a full deck operation because the KB attack was a naval strike mission against rather meager naval units. Did Mundy have good recon on Soerebaja? I am amazed he would send the KB in like this...
